I am curious about your "Fred/Ted" VanOrman. I looked thru what I have at the moment for the VanOrman surname, and the info you have may help deconflict some things.

Do you have anything else to share to include some dates and more details on the census records you've found so far...

Your mention of 'Frank' [My Francis VanOrman??] is interesting.

I've got some 'holes' which might be explained by some of what you've mentioned.

btw Did you mean Willow in Greene County Iowa?

I am also researching the Vanorman name. My great-grandmother ( Annie Hirsch) was married to a Ted or Fred Vanorman. They were divorced before my grandmother (Helen Vanorman) was born. They lived in Green, Willow county, Iowa. I am thinking that this Daniel and Cynthia are maybe Teds parents because of the area where they are listed in the census. He is not listed as a child....so that is where I am at a lost. Ted had a brother Frank that he was living with in another census.

Did you and Michael Gronshong ever find additional info about Nellie/Lucy Mack, wife/wives of John Truesdale VanNorman?

In studying Zebulon's probate, Lucy Mack (wife of John VN) was deceased by 1836. It's also possible that her heirs did not file petitions until they were of age, which also fits with approximate birth dates. Between 1836 and 1841, Marvin, James Riley, and Densey Young would have reached majority. Last, it's possible that John T. VN might have married (2) Sally Mack after 1837. Sally Mack was listed as a single woman, daughter of Benjamin, in one of Zebulon's probate papers. She was a sister of Lucy.

A quick and belated add fwiw.... I've got Daniel's father as Samuel VanOrman, mother Sarah OLDS.

In the 1900 Census Record the Grandchild is Grover BATES, son of William BATES and Harriett VANORMAN.

As far as the 1870 Census, I find Daniel and Cynthia living in Liberty, Ringgold, Iowa. Residing with them are Harriet and James along with Daniel's Mother, Sarah OLDS

wrt the 1860 Record, they are living with Nathan Osborn, husband of Sarah's neice, Elizabeth Angeline OLDS

Interesting post/theory - Could explain why I can find nothing on an 2nd great grandmother - Lydia Jane Van (N)Orman - b 1815 supposedly in Sarasota, NY, and d 1896 in Steuben, NY. Married an Adam Abbott in approx 1830 and had ten children. Just one of those puzzles to solve.

Harriett Rich & Isaac VN... m. about 1835 Steuban Co., NY

I recently learned that the maiden name of my 2nd great grandmother was "Rich". Her name was Harriet Rich born about 1814 m. Isaac Van Norman b. 1794 who worked for a time for his brother-in-law Anson Tiffany head sawyer at the Corning Mills in New York.

From an orbit for Anson Tiffany 1797-1847 it lists sisters of Mrs. Tiffany (no first name in the article but I learned her name was Mary "Polly" 1800-1877) as being Harriet, Eliza Ann who married William S. Van Norman (second spouses for both?) from Cattaraugus Co., and Martha who married Joseph Brown of "Little Flats Community" of Corning NY. Their mother listed only as Mrs. Rich.

Anyone recognize this family? Would like to find out more about this RICH family and Isaac VN's life in New York.

They migrated to Wisconsin first and then settled in Minnesota where they both died.

Their children were:
1. Charles R (assume middle name was Rich) 1837-1918 m. Janet Nancy Hammer and died in Oregon.

2. Mary Harriett (sometimes listed as Hannah) 1838-1910 m. twice - 1st Thomas Torrey 2nd Duane Philes.

3. George W. 1840-1862 (died in the CW)

4. Theodore S. 1843-1863 (also died in the CW)

5. James Melville 1845-1919 m. Susannah Rice and died in Illinois.

6. Daniel E. 1848-? m. Almira Farris (prev. marriage to Allen)

7. Adelia Sylvia 1849-187? m. Charles L. Orcutt died MN.

8. Ella E. 1854-1918 m. Morris Barker (my ancestors) died Illinois

9. Elmer J. 1858-1870 died typhoid fever epidemic in MN.

I would greatly appreciate the help of all VanOrmans, VanNormans, VanOrnams, VanArnams, VanAernans everywhere who descended from Jan Dirkz VanArnhem DOB 13 Oct 1640 Arnhem Gelderland, Netherlands, DOD abt 1739 New York.I have a copy of a book published in 1986 by the VanArnhem Family and have created a PAF database of about 5700 names from this book which I will be happy to share. I have made a few corrections and would appreciate help in updating the information both by correcting errors and by adding new family data since 1986. I had the dates reversed,

Lyman Van Norman died January 18, 1894, some have it listed as January 19th. It is the 18th on the headstone.

Thanks for the response, I am very interested in sharing information.

Yes, Lyman is my Great, Great, Great Grandfather. His death date is January 19, 1894 although some have it listed as the 18th of January. He married Lovis Curtis in 1838 and they had four children, Amanda, Sarah, Henry (George Henry) and Margaret. I am 99% sure his line goes back to January (Jans) Dirkz that came over from Arnhem, Guilderland, Netherlands. Most online genealogies record it that way. I am trying to find an online legal document (cenus, birth etc) showing that Jacob Truman & (Lydia) Van Arman are his parents. If I can get that it would finalize the matter.

Lyman & Lovisa left Canada and came to Michigan in 1857 which makes his paper trail a little harder to track down.

I am currently trying to photograph of all the headstones I can find. I was at the Evergreen and Moshier cemeteries (Sanilac County) just this past Saturday. I photographed several headstones. Some of the older markings are not readable and some of them have been replaced with new headstones.

I have many newpaper articles on the Van Normans that settled in St. Clair and Sanilac Counties.

I would prefer to correspond by phone and email if possible.

I have seen where Mary Polly SAMS daughter of Henry & Abigail SAMS married Heman Van Norman and they had Ethan & Abigail..moved to Indiana.I have also seen that Mary Polly SAMS daughter of Henry & Abigail SAMS married Herman Van Norman had Ethan & Nancy..Are these the same people or is this TWO different families?

James born about 1845 N.Y.

Ella born about 1852-54 Wis.
Elmer (?) born about 1858 Wis.

Ella and Harriett are listed on the 1880 census for Stearns Co., Mn. with the last name spelled as Vannoraian. Harriett is a widow at this time. Ella married Morris Barker in 1888 in St. Cloud, Stearns Co., Mn. At that time her name is listed as VanNorman.
Brother Daniel is on the 1880 census for Polk Co., Mn. listed as VanOrman. He is a boarder/farmer in the household of Edgar Smith in the town of Fisher.

I have a transcription of a transcription for you. Maybe this is what you're looking for.
Marriages in Monroe County, Michigan, a book at Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has this entry:
Vanorman, Abram, (age)24yr R:(residence) Mln Twp.
Litchard, Alvina 19yr R:Mln Twp. Married 23 Oct 1856 in Mln. Twp. by J.P. (I didn't transcribe his name). Wit. Isaac VanOrman and Matilda VanOrman. R: Ridgeway, Lnwe. Co.
P. 85. E.2

The 1860 Milan census has an Abram Van Arman (Ancestry transcribed it VanAnnan) age 36 PA and Almira or Alvira 24 PA, Mariah 3, and Emma 1, both born MI.
2 dwellings down there's a Joseph Litchard 80 PA, probably a relative of Alvina/Almira's.

Where did you get Doane for Almira's surname? If that's for sure, then this is not the couple you're looking for. Could Melvina and Emma be the same person?

I'd like to know what you think.

Mary Sams, daughter of Henry and Abigail Sams, wed HemanVan Norman Oct. 19, 1819 in Richland Co, OH. They had children Ethen and Abigail and moved to Jennings Co, IN by 1840. Ethen wed Elizabeth Clements August 4, 1847 and then Catherine Files April 4, 1866. Abigail wed Monroe McMindes October 18, 1840. TheVan Norman's are buried in Vernon, Jennings Co, IN as Van Arnem. The McMindes families moved on to Clinton Co, IN.
Nancy was the daughter of Heman's brother Miles who died 4 Apr 1828, leaving his wife Charlotte with 10 children. In 1829 she married the widower Abraham Sams, son of Henry and Abigail, supposedly in Green Co., PA, but I have found no evidence to support that marriage place.

Looking for info on Henry VanArman or VanAraman born in Vermont in 1803, moved to Ellenburg New York. His wife's name is Marcia or Martia, don't know her maiden name. Their children are Lewis b 1832, John M b 24 Dec 1848, Hannah b 1847, George b 1851, James H b 1830, and Horace b 1841. James H and Horace died young, I found their shared gravestone in Ellenburg with their parents' names on it sp. VanAraman. The 1870 census lists them as VanArman.

Have you made any progress with this inquiry? My notes show an Abram VanOrman whose wife was Almina or Almira. Abram was born in 1832 in New York to Daniel VanOrman and his first wife Maria. He probably moved west to Michigan with Daniel, Daniel's second wife Abigail, and their numerous children sometime around 1850. Abram enlisted at age 32 on the 3rd of January, 1864 at Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, died of disease at David's Island,NY Harbor on the 24th of April, 1865. Do these dates sound right to you? If so, I can give you more info as I am descended from Daniel too.

I believe this is the son of Isaac and Harriet VanNorman (surname misspelled half dozen ways over time) However when I did another search for this couple the poster stated Cynthia's maiden name was See. Their marriage date was listed as 4/30/1863. See could have been a first marriage? Some posters have Daniel as born in 1848 however this census record would put him born around 1842. Daniel shows up in Grand Marsh P.O., Adams Co. Wis. 1860 census as age 13, however he is missing from the 1850 census with his family. In 1850 the surname is misspelled as VanOmum, in 1860/1870 it is VanNorman. 1880 Isaac VanNorman has passed and Harriet's name is butchered as Vannoraian. I have more information if you are interested in the rest of the family. Leslie

These would be the descendants of Jacob Vanorman/Vanornum etc married to Lydia Sawyer.

I am a descendant of Jacob and Lydia's son Jacob who married Sarah Lewis.

Hello, I am looking at the VanOrmans (etc) for a friend. I am researching Walter VanOrman, son of Daniel and Cynthia, born about 1882 in Adair County, Iowa.
Here is what I have:
Walter b. 1882 is the youngest of Daniel and Cynthia's children. The others are Harriet (1867), James (1871) Francis/Frank (1873), Mary (1875), Bertha (1877), and Wilbur (1878, d. bef. 1885).
Either Harriet or Mary may have married a Bails, because in 1900, Daniel, Cynthia and Bertha are living in Willow, Greene, Iowa, and a Grover Bails is present in the household, identified as a grandson.
Daniel and Cynthia's household is also found in the 1885 Iowa State Census, in Carroll County, Iowa. They are found in 1880 in Adair County, IA. I have not found them in 1870 yet.

In 1860, Daniel (19 years) and Sarah (50 yrs) Van Norman are living in the household of Nathan Osborn of Cedar, Washington County, IA. Their role there is unclear -- they are not identified as boarders, servants, or laborers. In 1850, Sarah is living with Samuel, Briggs, Daniel, Sarah C. and Joseph Van Norman in Jordan Twnshp, Jaspar County, Indiana. Samuel is only 15, but he is identified as "Farmer".

Theadore son 17 born N.Y.

Edelin (?) dau. 11 born N.Y.
Ella E. dau. 6 born Wis.
Albert G. son 3 born Wis.

By 1870 this family appears on the Stearns County Minnesota Census:
Isaac VanNarman 74 famrer born PA.
