He was the son of William E. Brown and Mary Florence Todd who also had children Essie, Joseph, Lydia, Dora, Laura, John, Nettie, and Jasper.

James E married Pearl Jones unknown date.
Children of James E and Pearl include Jean, Leroy Dale, Joanne, and Sandra.
Pearl was the daughter of Charles Luther Jones and Amy Elizabeth Tatum. Other children include Earl, Orville, Alton, and Paul.
Pearl could have also been married to a "Bud" Vanderpool with a child of Dennis.
