My family is from southern Illinois, My grandparents- John Allen and Mary Trovillian Vancil still reside in Goreville. His father and grandfather (both John Allens) are burried in a cemetery about 10 miles from their home. My father John Allen Jr. is also burried in the same cemetary. I would love to know more! I grew up in franklin Co. Il. W. Frankfort.

Hi,
I am a Vancil from central Illinois and have been researching the Wentzell-Vancils since 1996.
It`s strange that I have not heard of you or the John Allen Vancils. I have an aunt living in Marion,IL and a cousin in Paducah who is the stepdaughter
to my aunt there in Marion. I have a large amount of research and would love
to exchange info.
I also make a trip to So. Il every spring and
will be doing so next year (the good Lord willing). Maybe we can arrange to meet.
My research goes back to Johann Adam Wentzell
b. 1725 Germany and I am a descendent of His
Jonas.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hello Dorothy

Thanks for your reply,

With the help of a very nice lady I found out that I am also a decendent of Johann Adam Wentzel. I think this is how it goes (I don't have my booklet with me now, but I think this is correct)His son John's son John had a son Edmond D. who had a son Allen who had a son John Allen who is my grandfathers father. The records seem to stop with Allen, but he and his wife of record are burried in the cemetary I talked about earlier. I should have the info in front of me, but I'll check it and revise if necessary. I now live in Maryland and my grandparent are in Goreville Ill.

Please feel free to add anything for ask anything, sounds like you've done a lot of research, I would love to learn more.

Judy

Johann Adam Wentzell

Dorothy Vancil-Tank  (View posts) Posted: 8 Jan 2001 8:15PM GMT
Hi Darrell,
Yes, Johann Adam is the father of Jonathon.
I have no proven info about Johann Adam Wentzell
except that he was born 1725 in Germany and
came to America on the ship Patience in 1751.
I have a copy of Jonathon`s will dated 1817.
I obtained a copy of the book JONATHON VANCIL
AND SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS from the man
in Springfield, IL who is the son of K. Burney
Vancil the author. I must tell you that he is
not all he appears. I sent him money for a copy
the book and he only sent me half. You may be
able to get it through interlibrary loan.
There is also a book called VANCIL and Lyrle
Families of IL. written by John Doty.I bought
a copy from him in 1995. I don`t know if he has
any left, but I do know that my cousin got it
through interlibrary loan also. There is a 3
volume set of the HIstory of Union County (IL.)
written by George Parks that also has our Vancils
in it. I also bought a set of that one-I purchased
it from his wife and at the time she said she
only had one set left. You can check on that
through interlibrary loan also-if they don`t
have it contact The Friends Of Union County
104 Clemons, Cobden, IL. 62920.
I started my research in 1995 and have quite
a large collection of material. I have
relatives in DuQuoin, Sparta, Marion,IL. and
also a cousin in Paducah,Ky. I go down there
every spring and we go do research. I have been
to both VANCIL Cemeteries in Jackson Co.,and
Union Co. My ancestors are buried in both
cemeteries.
I am a descendant of Jonathon`s 4th son Jonas
and have been to his grave at the Hiller-Crab
Orchard Cemetery in Jackson Co., IL.
Where did you get your info about hessen-hanua?
I was told (but have no proof) that Johann was
born in Dusseldorf. I`ve also been told that the
name Wentzell is as common in Germany as Smith is here.
Waiting to hear from you.

Hi Darrell,

You are right about your descendants.I`m sending you
what information is in the JONATHON VANCIL AND
SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS. I hope it will help
you.
Benjamin VANCIL(son of John VANCIL and Eve Weddle)
born 25 Jan, 1804 near Dayton, Ohio, died 11 Mar
1883, Union Co., IL. Married (1) Catherine Land-
rith 15 Mar, 1927 Union Co. She was born between
1804-1810 and died between 1870-1875. He survived
all of his sons except Randolph Marshall.Three
daughters were living in 1883. He married (2a)
Mrs Nancy Langley in Union Co. 18 Feb 1875. She
was born 1819 of 1824 in Ky.He is buried in the
family cemetery near where his home stood. He lived
in south Pass or Cobden Precinct.

HISTORY OF ALEXANDER, UNION AND PULASKI COS.
Benjamin VANCIL lived on his father`s farm in the
northern part of Union County 1853 when he
opened up what has long been known as the VANCIL
homestead. After he settled on his farm near
Cobden, he began in the nursery, fruit and floral
culture, and as he gave his whole thoughts to his
business, he was very successful. He shipped fruit
trees and flowers to many states and took many
premuims at the fairs. He had 85 varieties of
apples and 32 of pears but many were not
profitable. Uncle Benny`s fruit was always
in demand and he had at least $100 worth of
silverware received as prizes for exhibits at
fairs. From 1861 until the time of his death,
he was so cripled wwith rheumatism that he
could not work and so had to abandon his
nursery and his flowers, with the exception
of his few choice varieties. His experience
has been of great value to the present fruit
growers in this vicinity. He was a perfectly
upright man and a gentleman of the old school.
He was a member of the Dunkard religious society
and was a Jackson and Douglas democrat but
took no part in politics.
I have both Vols.12 of the Union Co., Cemeteries
and I could not find a listing for a Walnut
Grove. The VANCIL Cemetery is located on a knoll
right off Hwy 51 in Union Co., and you have to walk
small pasture to get to it. It is a very lovely
cemetery and is well maintained but I don`t know
by whom. There is a road sign (green and White)
that says VANCIL CEMETERY ROAD.
If you would contact me through my e-mail address
dvancltk@cin.net I will send you a photo of the
cemetery.
I feel that I`m taking a lot of space for this
site so I will also give you more info if you
e-mail me.
Randolph Marshall is also listed in this same
book, but don`t feel that I should take any
more space here.
Waiting to hear from you.
Dorothy Vancil-Tank
P.S. If you send $5 and a SASE to Union County
Courthouse-311 W Market St-Jonesboro, IL.
zip 62952 you can obtain a copy of Benjamin`s
marriage licenses.That is $5 each
