This might be your Henry M Vancil at age 1....

1850 Adams County Illinois census
Liberty
house 16, family 16
William Vancil age 28, farmer, born Illinois
Mary A age 24, born France
John age 2 born Illinois
Henry M age 1 born Illinois
Joseph Turney age 22, farmer, born France
same house, different family
house 16, family 17
Zachiriah Lisele age 30 born Illinois
George age 7 born Illinois
Jane? age 6 born Illinois
William age 3 born Illinois

This is probably a Lyerla - and it apprears his wife has died.
The Joseph Turney - the name is very easy to read and it is Turney. Now he might have said it with a French accent, but the census taker wrote Turney. I would guess that Joseph is a brother to Mary Vancil.

Now....the Lyerla family says there is a Frenchman who died in the area named Tourner, if you look on Adams Co IL genweb page, there is an article about this under
Zachariah Lierly, Rev War Veteran.....

I got this far cause there were Turneys who married 3 Culp sisters in Adams Co Illinois
04/02/1846 Adams Co IL Esther Culp married George Turney/Tourney
11/18/1850 Adams Co IL Isabella Culp married Peter Turney/Twiney
08/07/1853 Adams Co Il Maria Culp married Franklin Tourney
(there is also a marriage in Adams Co Il for George Tourney to Elizabeth Allen in 1858)

I think this might be brothers of the Mary Vancil

I found the Culp family in 1850 Adams Co Illinois, but listed as Culph
Jacob Culph age 64, his wife, daughters Isabella age 20, Drucilla ? age 14. Isabella would marry Peter Turney in November of 1850.

I also found George Towney age 28 born France, wife Esther age 23 born Indiana and Jefferson age 3, John B age 1 both born Illinois. This is the Esther Culp/Culph, and she married George in 1846.
also living in this same house was Maria Culph age 16 - she would marry Franklin Tourney/Turney in 1853.

So perhaps this is the family of Mary Vancil - it is at least something for you to look at.

My Turney family was German speaking Swiss who arrived in PA in 1741, so no connection to this Tournay/Turney group in Adams County Illinois. Read the article about the Lierly family history, for info on the Frenchman who might have been connected to your Mary Vancil.

The connection between William Vancil and the Tourneys is that his wife Mary is a Tourney. Also Joseph is Mary's brother and their father was Jean Baptiste Tournier; he went by John B Tourney in the US.

The connection between Zachariah Lierley and William Vancil is that they are 1st cousins. The Zachariah Lierly that you referred to at the beginning as being a Revolutionary War Veteran was their grandfather. William's mother was Susanna Catherine Lyerly and she married Martin Vancil. The younger Zachariah's father was William Albert Lierle. It is hard to keep track of the older Zachariah's descendants since he had children with 5 women, 4 he was married to.

You are correct that Zachariah's wife had died and the connection between the Lierles and the Tourneys is that Zachariah Lierley's 2nd wife was Joseph and Mary Tourney's half-sister Apolena Tourney. These are my fiancee's 3rd great grandparents. They are buried in Hill Cemetery in Daviess County, Mo.

George Tourney is also a full-sibling of Mary and Joseph. George was married 3 times. Jean Baptiste Tournier had 5 children with his first wife while in France and he then married Marie Catherine Ballot in Stark County, Ohio before coming to Adams County, Illinois and having 9 children with her. Actually the first 3 of 9 were born in Ohio.

There also is a in the Illinois Marriages named Peter Tourney that married Isabella Culp and he wasn't really a Tourney. He was a Moulin. He was the only child of Marie Catherine Ballot and her first husband Nicholas Moulin. He did get married as a Tourney but was a Moulin in the following 1860 census, and in 1870 and 1880.

Most of the children by Jean's 2nd marriage moved to Daviess County, Missouri
