It's not my line of Vances but I notice there are several public trees on Ancestry that trace John S. and Sally's line of Vances - one here: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/1316248/person/-939643807?ssr...=, another here: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/4789830/person/-225307941?ssr...=. I can't vouch for their accuracy but they seem pretty well-sourced.

There seems to be some indication (but not proof, as far as I can tell) that that line of Vances was descended from Andrew Vance and Jane Hogue/Hoge, who lived in Fredrick Co, Va in the 1700s. If that's true, that Vance line has been tied to DNA Group 1b of the Vances, who are traced back to Ireland.
