There was an Amanda Melvina married to Isaac Wallace and a Bessie Melvina married to Isaac Newton. There was also another wife called Fanny married to one of the Isaacs. Due to wars, religious persecution, health issues, and search for new deposits of iron ore, the family moved through New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, up to St Petersboro, Ont. to the Hastings Co. to Tillsonburg, not necessarily in that order, and prior to moving to Canada, to Wyoming where they bought land from the Indians only to have the British claim it for the Crown and those that remained behind in Wyoming were imprisoned. Therefore, names were changed, second names became a way of tracing people, and names such as Van Naamen, (Dutch) and Van Orman bare very similar names across family trees. I have birth and death records for at least 3-4 generations of the family that came west from St Petersburgh and Campbelford out to Koksilah (Duncan area and settled in places like Somenos. The first house in Duncan was built by a Herd on my Grandmother Van Normans side (Herd). Under Isaac C and Isaac Wallace they came west re the railway building and three brothers are buried in Somenos. I have recorded on My Heritage.com. We seem to be the lost link that some people are looking for. There were more than one Isaac, more than one John, more than one Melvina and more than one Joseph. To complicate things further, Joseph had 3 or 4 wives. Times were rough between battles for land between the British, Indians, French, and natural deaths. I will slowly fill in the pieces for you. I think you may find that the Van Ormans and the Van Normans, the Van Naamens are one and the same. Part of the mystique was due to secret societies and religious/scientific leanings. Also DePue, DePieu, DePew and deMontagne were most likely one and the same. Also the French had some Huguenot roots which were also in religious disputes. A tumultuous history. Add to that the connections with Rembrant, William of Orange the Norman Invasion and the Viking history, as well as the European plots in Gelderland and you have quite a history.

I believe that widow Cornelia (or Cordelia) returned to to lived in the town of Simcoe in Norfolk County rather than in Simcoe County.
DD Van Norman was married to Cornelia/ Coordelia Crouse in the Talbot District, Upper Canada, which is where Norfolk county was situated. He was then a resident of the township of Charlotteville (where Delhi Ontario now sits) and she was then a resident of the township of Woodhouse. Both of these townships were in Norfolk County.
Cornelia/ Cordelia Dayton Van Norman died in Toronto, York County Ontario on 13 Aug 1898. The name on her death registration has been erroneously transcribed as Cornelia Saxton Van Norman.

I have a genealogy of the family of Abner Everitt Van Norman who was named after his maternal uncle, Abner Everitt, of Flamborough West Township, Upper Canada. Abner E VN had 8 children including the 3 you named. Some sources add a son, William, but I have found no evidence for this 9th child. I have an original scrapbook which was apparently compiled by Abner E VN's eldest daughter, Kate Lavell Van Norman, who married Walter Oaten. How can I help? I am not a direct descendant.
raymond.cummins@utoronto.ca
My name is Arlene Van Norman Reeves. I just found Ben’s message about Hiram.

I had been “talking” with Ben in 2011 when all of a sudden he stopped replying. Some time later I was on Find a grave and found he had passed June 4, 2011. What a shock! He is buried in Quantico National Cemetery. His obituary is on legacy.com.

Ben has a “private” family tree on ancestry which he gave me access to as a guest. His tree has over 4000 people, 118 photos and 95 stories. What a lose to researchers!

My condolences to his family.
Arlene
Yes, that's the Abraham/Ransom I was referring to. I don't believe that Abraham is the father of Melvina.

If you look at the 1870 census Melvina is living with Daniel in Lenawee Co, Michigan. She marries William there in 1877.

He married Annie Hansen in the Logan LDS Temple.

The information above is what I have. There is a son named Abraham Charles that was born to Annie and there is an Abram Van Orman found in Pennsylvania around 1844 but he was 56 years old if my calculations were correct.

Abraham married twice (Annie & Margaret) and his children were born mostly in Utah.

Could you share more on the Abraham/Ransom you've located?
I can answer this as the person who posted in 2007 is my Aunt. Yes, Melvina was married to William Henry Wise. Everything that we both have found comes back to Abraham Van Orman, s/o Ransom Van Orman or Van Arnhem.

Daniel Van Norman or Isaac or Hannah were never options. Guess there's more digging to do.

I believe I have a picture of Melvina; this is in storage in Calgary, AB. She was, I believe, married to one of my great grandfathers who went to Petersborough, Ont. (possibly Isaac Newton Van Norman) and then to Vancouver Island in the Duncan area. The name of Van Norman ended with my sister and myself who both had Van Norman as a maiden name. The descendent of Melvina was, I believe, Charles Kennedy Van Norman, my Grandfather who resided in Duncan, B.C. He was an engineer who worked with the CPR in building the railroad. I believe Melvina or descendent was married to Isaac Wallace Van Norman. There are two records of this. My Grandmother documented it all but I do not have the pictures with me.

Hope this helps,

Brenda Joy Wright-(nee Van Norman) Daughter of Wilmer (Van) Newton VN and Win

Can anyone tell me what cemetary Lucien Patton Van Norman b. 8 Dec 1840 in Whiteside, Illinois, is buried in? He died in Los Angeles, CA on 4 Apr 1925. We are trying to find where Angelina Requa Wood Church was reinterred. She is the mother of Ina Elizbeth Wood, who married Lucien after his first wife's death. Angelina was originally buried in the Lakewood Cemetary in Minneapolis, but later was moved to CA. We have no idea where in CA, until I came across the information of where Lucien died. Please let me know if you have any information.

Thank you,
Vicki Firth

Marie Bythewood Van Norman
Marie Bythewood Van Norman, 97, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, in Baton Rouge. She was born Nov. 2, 1910, in Voth, Texas, and moved to Morgan City as a child. She attended SLI in Lafayette and moved to Lake Charles in 1934. Marie taught home economics at LaGrange High and Westlake High School. Marie was an accomplished wife, mother and grandmother skilled in all aspects of home and hearth. She was an avid seamstress, loved needlepoint and specialized in making intricate decorations for the holidays. Marie loved to cook and bake and to set a beautiful table. She was always happiest when perfecting her warm home for her family to enjoy. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Marie Van Norman, of Baton Rouge; two sons, Russell Howard Van Norman Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Hardy Van Norman, of River Ridge, and Ted Craig Van Norman and his wife, Zee Ferchaud Van Norman, of New Orleans; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Howard Van Norman Sr., a Lake Charles attorney who served his country in World War II and earned a Bronze Star. The Van Norman family would like to express its gratitude to all of Marie's caregivers who eased her through the final stages of her life. Your care and compassion are deeply appreciated. Service at Hixson Funeral Home, 3001 Ryan St., in Lake Charles, on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m., with the interment following in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, also in Lake Charles.
Mississippi Van Norman family

I am Ben Van Norman, Jr. I am descended from Joseph,Aaron,Hiram,Cyrenus,Thomas Benjamin,Ben Halbert.

I haven't done any research since I proved my SAR lineage about twenty years ago. I am now interested in picking up the research again. I am particularly interested in following the ancestry of Hiram's wife Elizabeth Saunders Walden. If anyone is interested in collaborating with me, I would appreciated it. There is much conjecture regarding her mother, i.e., whether it was Rachel Knoe or Nancy Saunders.

Help!

Ben

Mississippi Descendants of Hiram Van Norman.

I am Ben Van Norman. I am a direct descendant of Hiram Van Norman

I am convinced that Hiram's father was not Aaron Van Norman, but someone else. I have done a lot of research to prove my claim. Hiram's mother was Lucretia Bailey Woodward. She Married Aaron Van Norman in 1800 when she was already pregnant with Hiram.

I have started a DNA project on Ancestry.com. I have compared my DNA results with the Van Norman Family Association DNA results and found little likelihood that I am descended from Joseph Van Norman or Aaron Van Norman.

I hired a Canadian Certified Genealogist on Ancestry.com to research the long held rumor that Lucretia Bailey Woodward married a British Officer who was subsequently killed, leaving her pregnant with Hiram. The rumor has Aaron marrying her and raising Hiram as his own child and only revealing his true paternity just before his death. The results of this research are attached. Suffice to say that the rumor/belief is unlikely to be true. I am convinced that we must determine Hiram's father using DNA results.

I hope that some of you will join me in this research.

Ben Van Norman
I don't know if there is a connection to the first post for siblings of Mary and Eliza but I have a gggggrandfather Philemon Baldevin Van Norman who was born Jan 10, 1808 in Manchester, New York who somehow was in Liberty, MS by his twenties. I would suppose he could have come with his parents and siblings but I have no information on any of them. He married on May 4, 1837 in Amite County, MS a Mary Ann Rollins (b. Mar 26, 1816) from St. Helena Parish, LA. Some of their children are Lattimore Van Norman (b. 6/12/1838, Liberty, MS), Mary Lucretia (Molly) Van Norman (b. 8/28/1841, Amite County, MS), and Philemon Baldevin Aron Van Norman (b.2/28/1844, Liberty, MS). I am descended from this second Philemon.

Because I do not know a relationship beyond the first Philemon in Liberty, MS was thinking this connection may be the one I have not yet found.

Do you have any records of siblings to this Philemon Baldevin Van Norman?

Thanks,
Robert

Hello,Is this what you are looking for?

(1) Joseph Van Norman..(1741-1824)wife:..Elizabeth Wyburn
(2) Joseph's son-->Aaron Van Norman..(1778-1862)..wife: Lucretia Woodward

In Aaron's Family...
Aaron's (2nd) son....Hiram Van Norman..(1800-1875)
Aaron's (6th) child...Elizabeth (Eliza?) Van Norman..(b.?)
Aaron's (7th) child...Mary A. Van Norman...(b.?)

You say...
Elizabeth VN married ..James Morris Sutton
Mary A. VN married...(1)Thomas Bruce (2)Thomas Vernon

My records list Elizabeth VN with no birth or death dates married to a "Thomas Jackson" in 1830..(maybe she married more than once?)"Elizabeth Jackson appears on the church roll of Plymouth Baptist Church; date of roll 1857-1865".

I have Mary A. VN recorded also with no birth or death dates, and married to "Garnet Bryant" in 1833. Both husband's info is marked "untraced".

Did Elizabeth VN maybe name her daughter-"Mary Wilson Sutton" after her sister "Mary" A. Van Norman?

In my records, Elizabeth VN and Mary A. VN's brother "Hiram Van Norman" and his wife "Elizabeth Sanders/Saunders Walden" have eight children. The second son was "Cyrenus C. Van Norman"..(1822/?1827-1884)...He did marry.."Mary Wilson Sutton"..(?1850). If Aaron Van Norman's family is the one you're looking for, then Mary W. Sutton and Cyrenus C. VN were first cousins married.

Mary Wilson Sutton and Cyrenus C. VN named their first son, "James Vernon Van Norman"..Remember you said that Mary W. Sutton's Aunt, Mary A. Van Norman, was married to a "Thomas Vernon".
Their first son, "James Vernon" Van Norman is my Great-Grandfather.

I hope this information is helpful to you and not something that you already have. I'm happy to share my Van Norman info with you...Regards, louwel_1

Dear George,
I cannot believe that I found a letter from your husband or Nina?? about you....
written in '04 I think. I was surfing the internet for some posts that got on sites because of my work in broadcasting for over 25 years and other things and saw I had a posting on this Ancestry site. I had lost touch with many from '04 on and in '05 a terrible tradegy in family seemed to have taken me away from any interests. I am 77 now and the days pass quickly. From reading these old posts it seems my connection to Hiram Van Norman may not have been authentic since someone has posted that HIRAM was a "house"....possibly they meant that HOUSE was his Name!... Anyway, it is down in my records that a Hiram Van Norman was a decendant of mine and roots in Mississippi. I do know for a fact that my Grandfather Samuel Berry Van Norman,Sr came from Miss and had a sister that lived in Greenville, Miss. He took me there to visit her when I was about 8 yrs old. He had an old model Ford Car as I remember. I cannot remembr that gr Aunt's name, but I do have it somewhere in my records.

I know at one time, George, you told me you were ill and after not hearing from you in a very long time I wrote and never heard back from you. Now it seems the answer to my inquriy was written on here. Please reply not only here but to my E mail address. The E mail address is subject to change next month because of the server problems. I will check back here also.

Carolyn Van Norman Babin

I do have a copy of the letter from Aaron's daughter and the letters from the researcher and even a map showing where the little red church should have been in Canada. My honest feeling is that the stories are somewhat true and that we will never know the whole truth.

Hi Arlene,

I too am related to Jacob Van Norman and Polly Parks.
Was your Phoebe born in 1828. This Phoebe was daughter of Jacob and Polly - I have that she married an Asa Eden - both that doesn't mean she later married someone else.
You can email me at LindaNoggle@verizon.net. Phoebe's sister Mary married a John Smith. There was also a James Van Norman (I think a brother to Jacob) who had a daughter Phoebe but she was born about 1840 - don't know if she would be too young for your Phoebe.

Linda Noggle
My ggg grandmother was Lula Wilson Van Norman who married (1) Robert Roche (2) Frank McLaughlin (3) William Shaw. She is buried at Ponemah Cemetery in Washington Parish, La. as Mrs Lula W Shaw (1865-1933). She was the daughter of Cyrenus C. Van Norman & Mary Wilson Sutton. Does anyone have any information on them? I would like to know where Cyrenus and Mary are buried. I have seen some posts that say Greenville Miss and I have seen Little Rock Ark. I would also like to know where my ggg grandfather Robert Roche is buried.

I have information on the Jacob Van Norman and Polly (Mary) Parks lineage. I am descended from their son, Jacob Frank Van Norman (b. April 10, 1840), married to Lydia Corbin March 16, 1860, and have a fairly complete record of their descendants. I'd be happy to swap information!

This is the info. I have on the woman who must be your Phebe Van Norman from familysearch.org, also confirmed by my own records. Sadly, no details on marriage to Lorin Smith, but I hope it helps! If you search "Jacob Frank Van Norman" on familysearch.org (the LDS site), the results are fairly detailed for a number of branches of that family, and appear accurate, based on my records.

PHEBE A. VAN NORMAN
Female

Event(s):
Birth: 07 APR 1828, Pennsylvania
Christening:
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: JACOB FRANK VAN NORMAN Family
Mother: POLLY PARKS

Well, I'm not sure what to do. I can't very well continue my line through Aaron if he was not Hirams father. Since I can't find anything on the "House" then I guess that line is just dead for now. Maybe something will come along at some point. Or at least I can hope. I have emailed several people hoping to get some answers and all I am getting is MORE conflicting information. Thanks for your posts!

Do you have proof of Cyrenus' children? Nina did marry Joshua Ede, but he had no middle initial, per his birth certificate. Joshua and Nina had three children: Joycilin, Llewellyn Yoe (my dad) and Mary M. Ede - married 1) Clarence Moore (if my mind is working right this morning) they had one daughter, Elizabeth; married 2) Allan Zane Lokey, they had one son, Allan Jr. (killed in WWII) and adopted another daughter and son. After Aunt Mary died, Uncle Allen married her first cousin, Kate Van Norman (no children). The only proof of Nina's parents is on her death certificate. I cannot find her listed on any census before she married my grandfather in 1892.

I have just about decided that Nina Van Norman, married to Joshua Ede, is NOT a daughter of C. C. Van Norman and Mary Wilson Sutton. I cannot find anything to prove that she is a daughter, other than her death certificate. I am not sure if I should believe that, because Joshua Ede's death certificate listed his mother incorrectly. I had to get a copy of his birth certificate to find out his mother's real name. (BTW, his name is not Joshua F. Ede, he has no middle name nor initial.)

If anyone has any proof of Nina Van Norman Ede's parents are please let me know.

I am junking all the info that I have on the Joseph and Elizabeth line.

Nina
The info that I have for Eliza Van Norman/Vernorman follows:

Cemetery records of Claiborne County, MS, Wintergreen Cemetery, Port Gibson, Claiborne, MS:
Eliza Sutton - b 31 Aug 1807, d 11 Apr 1845, Port Gibson

There is alternate birth info from Art Sutton given as born 31 Aug 1812, Maukport, IN.

According to the certified copy of marriage record (Claiborne County Marriage book 3, page 80): James M. Sutton and Eliza Vernorman were married 14 Sept 1829.

Children of James Morris Sutton and Eliza Van Norman:
1. Kate R. Sutton md Daniel A. Love
2. Mary Wilson Sutton md Cyrenus C. Van Norman.
3. Benjamin Humphreys Sutton
4. Emeline Townsly Sutton md 1)Alfred Willis; 2)H. H. Melchoir
5) Richard Cross Sutton?
6) Thomas Jefferson Sutton md 1)unknown; 2)Fleta Avery

All the children were born in Port Gibson, Claiborne, MS according to an article written by Mary Alice Willis in 1975 for the UDC, "Suttons in the War Between the States".

James Morris Sutton's will dated 15 Sept 1880 and recorded 19 Nov 1883, will book 1, page 436 & 437, Washington County, MS, lists the following children:
1) Emeline T. Melchor, daughter
2) Mary W. Vanoman, daughter
excluded two of her sons: James VanOman and Silas VanOman "who are specially accepted and are to reeive no portion of my estate" (this is stated four times in James' will)
3) Benjamin H. Sutton, son
4) Thomas J. Sutton, son

The only thing I have for Richard Cross Sutton is the article by Mary Alice Willis. He is not mentioned in James' will, but neither is Kate because she had died before James wrote his will. Richard is another person that I cannot find listed with his parents in any census record.

James married Laura Cross in 1846. Claiborne County has no record of their marriage, so they may have gotten married in Washington County, MS.

Children of Mary Wilson Sutton and Cyrenus C. Van Norman:
1) Kate Ellen Van Norman (Mrs. Kate E. Gunaway, Mary W. Van Norman's will)

2) James Vernon Van Norman (mentioned in James Morris Sutton's will in 1883) (Mary W. Van Norman's will)

3) William Robert Lester Van Norman (Mary W. Van Norman's will)

4) Lula Wilson Van Norman (Lula W. McLaughlin, Mary W. Van Norman's will)

5) Eliza E. Van Norman (some say this is my grandmother, Nina) (Mary W. Van Norman's will)

6) Thomas Benjamin Van Norman (Mary W. Van Norman's will)

7) Silas Van Norman (mentioned in James Morris Sutton's will 1883)

Mary W. Van Norman's will sates "Further I bequeathed and give my Aunt Mrs. Mary Vernon of the City of Fort Smith one hundred dollars of my estate" (Found Mary Vernon (wife), Thomas Vernon (head), and Kate E. Van Norman (niece) in the 1880 census of Sebastian, Fort Smith, AR. Mary married Thomas Bruce 27 June 1837, residence of James Morris Sutton, Port Gibson, MS (Port Gibson Correspondent 08 July 1837). She (Mrs. Mary Bruce) married Thomas Vernon 03 Apr 1843, Port Gibson, MS (Port Gibson Herald, 06 Apr 1843).

Thanks for any help in getting this family documented.

Nina

Ben,

Nothing more than I have listed in my posts. I know that a Mary Vernon in Arkansas was aunt to Kate because the relation was listed as such in the census.

I have lost interest in the Aaron/Hiram line because I cannot find any hinted fact that my grandmother was of that line. Her death certificate states that C. C. was her father, but that could be wrong. If you have any hard facts about my grand mother, Nina Van Norman Ede, please let me know.

Peace,
Nina

Thanks for the info louwel_1.

My Eliza VAN NORMAN (VERNORMAN) and James Morris SUTTON were married in 1829, Claiborne County, MS. I have children of this couple being born between 1830 and 1845. Eliza died in 1845 at Port Gibson, Claiborne, MS.

I had thought about this connection but the dates just don't work.

I am a granddaughter of Nina VAN NORMAN and Joshua EDE. I am beginning to think that my grandmother's death certificate is incorrect, just as my grandfather's was incorrect, concerning the names of parents. I had believed that Nina was a daughter of C. C. VAN NORMAN and Mary Wilson SUTTON, but cannot find her on the census records with her parents. Also, she is not mentioned in Mary Wilson's will.

What info do you have on the family of C. C. VAN NORMAN and Mary Wilson SUTTON? According to James Morris SUTTON's will, two of Mary Wilson SUTTON VAN NORMAN's sons were not to receive any of his estate. Those sons were listed as James VAN NORMAN and Silas VAN NORMAN. I have some family info on James, but all the info that I have on Silas is his name in James M. SUTTON's will.

Peace,
Nina

For some reason, long forgot, I thought seriously of the Williams being connected in some shape or form with the Van Normans. If you have any info of a connection, It would be a lifesaver.
