Hi,

Milton Carlston was married to my aunt Bess (ne: Weatherford). We called her "Mom" (she was also nicknamed "Dimple") and him "Pop." I don't know too much about Milton. He and Bess ("Mom")had two children a daughter named Betty who married a man named Derry Williams. (They had two children: Linda Leigh Williams and Derry Williams, Jr. [called "Denny" who died as a child from a fall]). They also had a son named Milton Carlston, Jr. (called "Sonny") who died in the 1970s of brain cancer.

I remember Pop as always old. He died when I was pretty young, maybe 10 years old, of some form of cancer. I was taken to visit him just before he died and he was hallucinating pretty vividly. Scared me as a child.

Funny, I was just thinking about Pop recently. Just before he died, he was in and out of consciousness. Mom stayed by his side, frantic with grief. The few minutes before he died, though, he became lucid, told her everything was going to be OK and asked her to step out to get him a drink of water. The moment she did, he died.

I would love it if you would share any family history on Milton. You can contact me at windytx@aol.com

I am researching information on John C and just saw your post about Milton Carleston. I am the great-Granddaughter of his brother Herbert and am looking for information about their father John R. Carleston. Have you been able to uncover anything?

Piersol - and McGregory Van Every's slave/servant, Jurden

The only two sources Mary Blackadder Piersol cites for McGregory Van Every's slave or servant, Jurden, is Niagara Historical Society #27 and Ottawa Archives #25

The NHS publications are online
http://www.niagarahistorical.museum/collection/publications....

I found some of the Canadian Archives Sessional Papers online, which I think is what Piersol calls the Ottawa Archives

Sessional Papers, Vol 25, Issue 9
http://books.google.com/books?id=Uf4wAQAAMAAJ

This contains the 1782 survey/census by John Butler, mentioned by Piersol, and it clearly assigns the one male slave in the census to Thomas McMicken.

This is just 'Issue 9' - has anyone looked at the whole Volume #25 and seen specific references to a slave or servant named Jurdan?

Or seen any reference outside of Piersol that isn't someone possibly quoting Piersol?

Slaves of Myndert Frederickse - Repost

In Mary Blackadar Piersol's Records of the Van Every Family, on page 9, she quotes a reference in Munsell's Annals of Albany to a court case involving a slave belonging to Myndert Frederickse.

The case she cited can be read, in two parts, here

Part One: http://books.google.com/books?id=nc0pAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA160

Part Two: http://books.google.com/books?id=kpUMAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA91

There is a suggestion the slave may have later been freed, as there is a reference to Myndert's "last illness" and an "assistant" "who was once haled into court..." in Swan of Albany: A History of the Oldest Congregation of the Lutheran Church, 1976. But Google doesn't allow a full view of the text, and it's not in any library near me.

Does anyone know of any additional research done on Myndert that has uncovered additional information on this slave or any other slaves he may have owned?

Replying to Eleanor Mink, post of 20 Feb 2005.

Agnes Jane Paterson's parents, Thomas and Agnes, were married on September 19, 1848, at St. John's Church, York Mills. The marriage was performed by the Rev. J. Lyons Arthurton, one of the clergy filling in for the Rev. Alexander Sanson, who was on leave in England for health reasons at the time. If you are interested I can send you a photocopy of the relevant page from the church's Service Register.

Her mother's maiden name was Agnes Savigny, the third surviving daughter of John Horatio Savigny and Eliza Savigny. Agnes Savigny was born in Scotland in 1819. Her father John Horatio Savigny together with a partner William J. Coates published "The Toronto Star, Transcript and General Advertiser" from 1843. Again if you are interested I can send you a scan of an old ferrotype of Agnes Savigny, taken after she was widowed from Thomas Paterson, showing her together with three of her children: daughter Agnes Jane P., son Hugh Savigny P., and a second son, apparently the oldest of the three children, whom I have not yet identified. Canadian senator Norman McLeod Paterson was the son of Hugh Savigny P.

Thomas Paterson was a hardware merchant who sat on Streetsville's first municipal council in 1858. He built a house at 13 Thomas Street (the street was named after him), which is pictured in: http://www.villageofstreetsville.com/hist-tour/hist-11.html . After Thomas's death in 1860 the house was inherited by Hugh Savigny Paterson. Thomas was the eldest son of James Paterson, Laird of Bonnie Braes, born October 20th, 1793 in Kelso, the Borders, Scotland. "Bonnie Braes" was an earlier name for the Hutton Farm that ran on land west of Mullet Creek, where the Vista Heights subdivision in Mississauga stands today. Again if you are interested I can send you a scan of an old calotype of James Paterson, taken on March 3, 1871, three years before his death.

The ferrotype of Agnes Savigny is 8 or 9 years older than the calotype of James Paterson. Thomas Paterson predeceased his father James by 13 or 14 years.
David Van Every's service in the New York Militia 1775-1777

This concerns David Van Every - son of (Mc)Gregor(y) Van Every.

I am querying about David Van Every's alleged service in the NY Militia from 1775-1777. Earlier posts on this board quote Piersol's book as saying he served in the 3rd regiment from 1775-1777, before deserting and joining Butler's Rangers. (I believe this is on pages 42-44...though I haven't yet seen the book.)

I found two Muster Rolls on Footnote.com

http://www.footnote.com/browse.php#21022799 (Direct Link to David Van Every's Service Record)

(I'll email the images to anyone who wishes to see them who doesn't have a subscription.)

1) Muster Roll for the 3rd Reg't of NY - June 28 1775-Sept 28 175

This muster roll says David Van Every, Pvt, enlisted on July 4, 1775 and deserted on September 12, 1775. (Or possibly September / 2)

2) A transcription "Copied from Rolls"

This record says David Van Every, Pvt, enlisted on May 23, 1777 for a period of 3 years, but deserted in June 1777.

---
**Alone** these two records suggest David Van Every was a member of the NY militia for a period of three months - two months in 1775 and 1 month in 1777.

Has anyone seen other records indicating that either the first record of desertion on the 1775 muster roll is incorrect, or that he returned inbetween?

I've heard it wasn't uncommon during the Civil War for bonuses to be paid for enlisting, causing some to enlist briefly just for the money, but I don't know if that was the case for the militias. Of course, there is also other possible reasons for briefly enlisting - such as gathering information. Or perhaps, age 18-20, David just wasn't sure yet what he wanted to do.

So -- What sources does Piersol cite for his service, and what other sources have other researchers found?

online VE Directory & hard copy VE Directory

8-27-04 The Van Everys now have an online "VE Directory" where VEs can register, search for other registered VEs, post messages, enter your own genealogy info, post up-coming events such as VE Reunions, post inquiries such as a particular VE you may be looking for, and we will be able to regularly email a VE Newsletter to all who are registered at the online VE Directory! It is free to use. However, it is a private site only for VEs and "married name" VEs and extended family VEs. It's not a site that anyone surfing the net will be able to log onto and see the info you enter. Security and firewalls are in place to prevent hackers from entering. If you are interested in registering and participating in the online VE Directory, please contact me. Please be sure to put "Van Every" or "VE Directory" in the subject line, or your email to me may be deleted. I delete emails when I do not know the sender. **ALSO** to complement the online VE Directory, I have begun a hard copy VE Directory that lists the names/addresses/tele #/emails (if provided) for VEs and "married name" VEs and extended family VEs. The hard copy VE Directory is broken down by country and then by state or province within each country. It will complement the online VE Directory to provide a "ready made" listing, and also for those folks who are not online at all, they can send a SASE (at least 2 stamps on the return envelope) to me and I'll print the list and send it to them. If you would like to be included in the hard copy VE Directory, please send me your full name/address (street & mailing if different)/tele #/email and I'll include you in the hard copy VE Directory. If you have VE family members that would like to be included in the VE Directory, have them provide their info to me, or you can provide their info if they authorize you to do so. I'm looking forward to being in contact with more and more VEs and the online VE Directory and the hard copy VE Directory each develops. Thanks for your interest!!

Abigail Alice Van Every 1896-1935

I didn't want to continue to hijack the other Abigail Van Every thread.

As near as I can determine, both of her parents were Van Every's. Her parents were Charles B (1846-1902) and Alice Melissa (1853-1929).

Charles B's parents were Isaac B (1824-1887) and Martha (I have no information on her). Isaac's parents were David (1782-1847) and Sarah Jones (1791-1879).

Alice Melissa's parents were Samuel (1820-1888) and Abigail Stewart (1825-1866). Samuel's parents were Andrew (1796-1873) and Nancy Van Sellas (1800-1880).

It appears as though David and Andrew were brothers, both born to David (1757-1820) and Sarah Showers (1761-1795). This is the information I am trying to confirm before I go any further.

I am also seeking information on some of the wives; Martha (wife of Isaac B), Sarah Jones (wife of Dave), Abigail Stewart (wife of Samuel) and Nancy Van Sellas (wife of Andrew).

Abigail Alice married Seth Jacobson. They had four children: Mabel, Charles, Richard and Rolland. Both Abigail and Seth died while their children were still young; ages 8 through 18. I am unable to determine who raised these children after Seth died.

My direct email address is lori_e_gutierrez@yahoo.com. I realize I am asking for a lot of information, but if any of you can help me with this I would really appreciate it.

May I join the party? I just started tracking my family tree and am not having a lot of luck with the Van Every line. Abigail Alice Van Every was my paternal grandmother. I believe she was the great-great granddaughter of Andrew Van Every who was William's brother.

If any of you have any information to share I would certainly appreciate it!

Thank you.

Re: Frederickse - Van Iveren birthplace(s)

Yes, quite possibly. You're citing Evjen [1916, Minneapolis], who lists Myndert in an appendix dealing with German immigrants, as opposed to the title's headline Scandinavians. I agree, it's quite possible.... even without mistaking the "r" for an "n".

The "n" could simply be a plural ending. Names of home towns and family seats routinely flip-flopped between singular and plural, often in the same sentence. For example, Borssele/Borsselen.

The missing "r" could be an abbreviation. Ad libitum abbreviations were used like personal fashion statements, apparently without many rules, except that a terminal consonant was usually retained. Modern day English preserves something similar in its Robt, Jas, Chas, Thos and Wm.

In the 17th century, of course, spelling generally was pretty ad libitum. But there were some regularities. In an interesting holdover from medieval Dutch, for instance, prepositions and articles such as "in" and "the" were still sometimes fused with the word they applied to, forming a single written word (as in Hebrew).

And if the main word was a proper noun, normally requiring a capital letter, its capitalization would be moved up to the first letter of the attached preposition or article. (Here the analogy with Hebrew breaks down for want of capital letters.)

Thus "the year" could sometimes be written "tjaar". And "in Ingelheim" could be written "Tenghelem" instead of "te Enghelem".

So I suspect it might have been possible to encounter "Teveren", and its ad-lib contraction "Teven", in reference to people hailing from the town of Evere.

Then there is the question of 17th century Dutch handwriting, and in particular the similarities and differences between a handwritten capital T and capital J.

You see, it's unlikely the entry in the church records was entered by Myndert's own hand. More likely the koster wrote it, or some other lay functionary, based on instructions given him either aurally or in writing.

Who gave him those instructions? Were they explicit or elliptic? How much background knowledge did they (rightly or wrongly) assume the koster shared? And how good was everybody's handwriting?

I was under the assumption that the brothers were from Jever. The marriage of Myndert, rather his marriage intentions as recorded in the New Amsterdam Dutch Reformed Church, 5 August 1656:
"Meijnert Fredrickszen, van Jeven, en Catharijn Burcharts, van N. Amsterd(am) ".
The "r" could of been mistaken for an "n".

John O. Eryen book, Scandivavian Immigrants in New York - 1630-1674, pages 410 - 411, indicated the brother from Jever.

Frederickse - Van Iveren birthplace(s)

I notice many queries about, and much speculation over, the birthplace(s) of Frederick Van Iveren, Myndert Frederickse, and Carsten Frederickse. The purpose of this post is to add another 2 cents' worth of the same.

Old Everinge, a village somewhere west of Ellewoutsdijk, was mentioned in 1288 in the accounts of the bishopric of Utrecht. Its exact site is no longer known today. Sometime between 1450 and 1500 it vanished beneath the waters of the Westerschelde (the estuary of the Scheldt River.)

New Everinge was founded nearby, ca. 1500, by the surviving inhabitants of Old Everinge. This village in turn was submerged in 1530 and had to be abandoned. Sometime around 1600 its last visible remnants vanished beneath the Westerschelde.

Myndert was born in 1636, his brother Carsten in 1638, and their father Frederick, we believe, sometime between 1588 and 1610. Thus none of them could have been born in the village of Everinge, in either of its two incarnations.

In this strict sense, Everinge is a genealogical dead end. "Van Iveren" might refer to Everinge, but only as an inherited family name, signifying Frederick's distant ancestral origins - the same way "van Beethoven" signifies the distant Flemish origins of Ludwig's grandfather Lodewijk.

However, if this is the case, Frederick could have been born nearby... perhaps in Borssele, or Ellewoutsdijk. This might (partially) explain the connection, indicated by Mary Piersol, with the Van Borsselen family's coat of arms.

In recent times Ellewoutsdijk has taken to calling itself, somewhat grandiosely, Ellewoutsdijk-and-Everinge; and in 1817 it adopted the "shield" of Piersol's description, as an element of its town crest and flag. Whether this element was present in the late 16th and early 17th centuries is another matter.

As for Borssele... up to 1959 (original adoption date unknown) the flag of the former municipality of Borssele had elements of the "prinsevlag" of 1572 - orange, white and blue - which may have been one of Piersol's "two flags".

Another possibility is that "Van Iveren" does refer to the actual birthplace of the two brothers - and possibly their father also - but via some other spelling transformation. If so, it needn't be quite so nearby. But it would have to be plausible.

The town of Jever, from 1575 to 1667 belonging to Oldenburg, and before that to East Frisia, has been suggested. "Jever" morphs plausibly to "Iveren"... including the faint glottal fricative at the beginning, and the tendency to pronounce "v"' like "f." But in other ways it's less plausible.

Myndert's given name is of uniquely Dutch origin. The brothers spoke and wrote Dutch, and used the Dutch "van" instead of "von". And while Dutch is closely related to West Frisian (as is English by the way - just to give some idea of what the word "close" means in this context), people born and brought up in Jever would have spoken East Frisian Lower Saxon, which is less closely related.

And then, of course, there is Piersol's pesky coat of arms. This doesn't seem to have any plausible connection with Jever.

A more suitable candidate might be the town of Evere. It was (and still is) mostly Dutch-speaking and mostly Protestant. In the summer of 1579 it signed the Union of Utrecht. A little over a year later, Alexander Farnese had cowed it with the threat of military force, and brought it back into the Union of Arras. Life was made difficult for Evere's Calvinists. Its few if any Lutherans, almost certainly insignificant in number, were probably not worth bothering about, and allowed to stay on.

Evere's official website states that "the domain" was transferred in the 14th century to the Van Borsselen family, and thence to a succession of related families descended from the Van Borsselen, who one after another held it until 1637, when it passed to the Van Horne family. Sometime around the end of the 14th century the town's seal and crest were modified to incorporate "l’écusson des Borsele". [I quote the French because the Dutch version of this web page is oddly missing.]

Whether "des Borsele" here refers to the family or the municipality is unclear - the plural "des" with the nominally singular "Borsele" supports either reading. In any event, what is shown is not the "shield" of Piersol's description. This "écusson" displays two falcons, perched on upjutting crags, facing each other, with a six-pointed star above each bird's head. In the left half of the shield, the crags and star are red and the background is gold. In the right half, these colors are reversed.

The oldest existing church in Evere is Sint-Vincentiuskerk, most of whose current structure dates from the 18th century, but whose romanesque tower goes back much farther (the town's official website says the 13th or 14th centuries; Wikipedia's Dutch webpage says the 11th century). Also, a large part of Schaarbeek cemetery lies within Evere. I wonder, has anyone looked around there for evidence of Frederick or his sons?

Your list of progenitures of our particular Van Every family agrees with mine -- at least until we get to Melvin. My great-grandfather was George, Melvin's older brother. I have a great deal of information on the family going back to Fort Orange/Albany. When Grandpa Samuel moved from Michigan to Texas, at least three of the sons (George, Melvin and Charles) went with him and his third wife, Margaret to San Marcos.
The information I have about my progenitor is someone named Frederick Van Iveren in Holland, perhaps Everinghe, who had sons Myndert, Carsten, and Rynier. The sons alternately went by the surname Frederickse and Van Iveren. The timing seems to match, and perhaps they are Cornelia's brothers. The dates I have for Myndert are 1636-1706, and for Carsten 1638-1688. It's Myndert and Carsten who made the journey to America.

My line:

Myndert
Burger Van Iveren
Martin Van Iveren
McGregory Van Every
David Van Every
Andrew Van Every
Samuel Van Every
Melvin Van Every
Myrtle Van Every (my grandmother)

This information came from the sister of my grandmother, and I'm not sure where she got it from.
Have a Melissa Van Every -- no husband listed.
Don't think she is your Melissa. She was the daughter of Charles Van Every (son of David Van Every and Sarah Showers) and JoAnna Pettit. Charles and JoAnna were married in 1823 in West Flamborough, Ontario. Happy hunting.

Have no information on Sarah Van Every married to James Howard BUT also have no reason to think the Van Every name was established in Canada before 1765 (the year you gave as her possible birth date).
In 1765, before the war, there was no Upper and Lower Canada -- the entire area was Quebec/Canada. There was a small population of settlers who were non-French.
The Van Every family which I'm familiar with, arrived in what is now Ontario at the close of the Revolutionary War about 1798.

Cornelia Frederickse (Van Every) Van Schoonhoven (B. abt. 1630)

Would there be any information on a progenitor of the Van Every family in America? Would he have been perhaps Frederick Van Every? I descend from a Cornelia Frederickse Van Every who was born about 1630 in the Netherlands. She married Claes Hendricksz Van Schoonhoven on October 30, 1649 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. They settled in Albany, NY and later Ulster County, NY. I wasn't certain if her parents or siblings also settled in the United States.

VAN EVERY on U.S. Railroad Accidents Message Board

Did any of your VAN EVERY ancestors work or travel on the railroads? Were any involved in train collisions or other mishaps? I have created a message board on Ancestry.com for U.S. Railroad Accidents. There is already at least one posting involving a VAN EVERY.

PLEASE BE FOREWARNED THAT SOME OF THE NEWS ARTICLES ARE GRAPHIC in regard to horrible injuries and deaths. Railroading involved many dangers and gruesome tragedies over the years.

If you have news articles or stories regarding accidents that occurred on the railroads, in train depots, on train bridges, etc., please post them on the Railroad Accidents board along with ALL surnames involved. And be sure to check the board for your surnames. Stories will be added regularly. The new board is here:

Boards>Topics>Disasters>United States>Railroad Accidents

Go to main Message Boards Page.
Use the “Find a Message Board” box to search on Railroad Accidents, and follow the links to the board;
OR
Under topics click on “browse all topics.”
Click on Disasters.
Click on United States.
Click on Railroad Accidents.

If you think you’ll want to return to this category regularly, go to the Railroad Accidents message board and from just above the messages click on Add to Favorites or Add to Notifications. This will make it much easier to access the Railroad Accidents board on future visits to Ancestry.com.
