Thanks Joanna,

In time the connections will come for you. That book attachment below about Church records had many in them perhaps your John is one of them. This Aaron which I found in the links was not in any other record place so it helped me. Check it out. Now you will not believe it my grandfathers side is Hood and my grandma's side is from Olmstead Minnesota. Directly after one of her ancesters in a Bio Record of Olmstead County was a Charles Van Campen's record one of the kids of the Van Campen's family you just mentioned. A very small world!!!!! The story tells of a pioneer family these Van Campen's were! Perhaps in Charles record there may be some Happy Trails and extra leads????? See images attached.

Hi Gary,
All my Van Camp and Vancampen info is in my Online Family Tree (DanVanMac). You are welcome to look there and see if you can find anything that helps you out. I have been researching the VanCampens for about 20 years and still no definitive info on my John Vancampen, b 1813 in NJ. I am pretty sure at this time that he is the son of James Dupuy Vancampen and Cecelia Decker. That is the only slot I have been able to fit him in. Sounds like you have done a lot of research too. Thanks for contacting me and if you find any new info, please let me know.

Best regards,
Joanna

Greetings from Arizona! I have a great deal of interest in this Aaron Van Camp (Campen). Inside our Hood Family Tree going back to Beaver County PA we have a William Hood born in Ireland 1790 who married a Eliza Van Camp, according to book Bio Sketch or Genelogical History of Beaver County, PA. (Attached Pictures) This Eliza was known to us as "Mary" Hood. Mary is listed in the Beaver County Census of 1850 as being born in PA (1806) which I feel is in correct. While the following 1860 census has her born correctly in (1806) New Jersey. We also have a picture of William and Mary's headstones.

Mary and William named their first child "Aaron" Hood perhaps after Mary's father Aaron Van Camp. They named their fourth or fifth child William "Elijah" Hood also after Elijah Van Campen or Van Camp, who is either a brother (as seen in the attached links below) or close cousin of Mary. Next, William Elijah Hood and his wife Mary Nelson named one of their daughters Mary Van Camp Hood after her Grandmother Mary Eliza Van Camp. Thus a full circle.

There are 4 Dutch Reformed church Baptism records from New Jersey of Mary Van Camp in (1807...very close, best match to the PA Census dates of 1806)! and a Elisa Van Camp in (1804) who would be sisters both of which state Aaron Van Camp(en) as the father! One spelled with the en and one without. I have to look at the Hood Family tree more as I think there is also a Moses Hood in there too.

There are records for John Van Camp (1807) below as well as an Elijah Van Camp (1809).

In reading here it seems like these Isaac and Aaron Van Camp potential brothers had close ties to PA and our Hood Family in Beaver County through their military service or through other Van Camp family members in PA???? It would also seem that by the dates of the 4 Dutch Reformed Church records below that this Aaron Van Camp of which I am documenting was perhaps born in or around the 1776 time, thus perhaps a Junior to the Aaron Van Camp that served in the Revolutionary War. These records all list Aaron's wife as Lanah Puder so these children must be related as brothers and sisters.

Elisabeth, born Jan. 14, 1804, and Marey, (Spelling?) born Oct. 17, 1805, daughters of Aaron Van Campen and Lanah Puder, were baptized August 23, 1807.

(Source: New York Genealogical and Biographical Records, Vol. XLI, 1910. pp. 200-205, Church Register of the Walpeck Congregation of Sussex County, New Jersey; Baptisms.)

Christening Place: DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH, WALPACK, SUSSEX, NEW JERSEY
----------------------
Aaron Van Campen in entry for Elisabeth Van Campen, "New Jersey, Births and Christenings, 1660-1980"

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FZZV-VB6?cc=1675383
-----------------------
Aaron Van Campen in entry for Marey Van Campen, "New Jersey, Births and Christenings, 1660-1980"

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FZZV-JFL?cc=1675383
---------------------
Aaron Van Camp in entry for John Van Camp, "New Jersey, Births and Christenings, 1660-1980"

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FZZV-59T?cc=1675383
----------------------
Aaron Van Camp in entry for Elijah Van Camp, "New Jersey, Births and Christenings, 1660-1980"

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FZZV-5J6?cc=1675383
------------------------

If any of you can help me with this Aaron Van Camp I think we have a strong connection overlapping into Beaver County PA and for the Hood Family Tree moving on to Meighs County, Ohio. There are Decker connections into the Hood Family Tree in Beaver PA, just like certain Van Camps have also.

Thanks to all who have shared insights on Aaron Van Camp and let me know if you know more on either Elisa "Eliza" Van Camp or Mary Van Camp's (New Jersey 1806) connection into your family tree! My email is: hoggschili@aol.com

Thank you all very much and Happy Searching :)

Gary

The source of the Isaac Camp birthdate/parents entry you mention is very unclear, and so cannot be considered reliable at this point. As you note, it comes from the GenWeb transcription of film 464964, which is a microfilm available from the Family History Library (Salt Lake City).

Normally the Library catalog would give a fair sense of where the microfilmed record came from, but in this case it does not. (Catalog entry at http://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainfram... ).

The catalog seems to indicate that the source was a "manuscript", but gives not author, location, date of publication, or other information about the source. Usually county or church records would indicate the source, and would not be called a manuscript, so this most likely is some researcher's compilation of data. The GebWeb transcripts also suggest this since some of the entries give a surname for the mother, which is unusual in American 19th century records (excepting some ethnic-Dutch church records). Those parental names therefore may be due to a supposition by the researcher creating the manuscript, and so not reflect any contemporaneous historical record. Also, it would be unusual for normal vital records to record the birth date of an adult (except sometimes in a death record), and quite unusual to record the adult's parent's names.

So, this data from film 464964 shouldn't be considered reliable unless the source of the contents of 464964 can be established as being a reliable source.

You certainly have more information on Isaac Van Camp(en) than I do. Both he and his son Aaron are buried in the Burnt Meeting House Cemetery in Morgantown, WV.
Most of the Camps are buried here are decended from Isaac.

Since most children are named after family members back then it is logical to assume that Aaron was named after Isaac's father or brother.
Barbi

There are indeed a few of us left in the Harmony Grove area, but even some of us (me for one) had to move away.

I descend from Isaac, John, William, David Jesse Holland, John, and David Camp. My brother and I are the remaining males in that branch, and neither of us have male children.

My cousin Joy lives on the remaining part of the original farm, and she raised her daughters there. She descends through David Jesse Camp's son William Everett.

I can try to answer any questions about this branch of the family. Incidentally, Isaac was indeed the last person to use Van Camp after moving to Monongalia County, as noted by Mr. Lowe.

Scott Camp

Has anyone ever figured out the answer to the challenges put forward by Mr. Lowe about the parents of Isaac van Camp in Monongalia County? Quite a few years have passed, and I see that most people on ancestry.com simply take as given the parental relationship of Isaac and Magdalena Rosenkrans.

I am inclined to accept this relationship too, as I found an odd entry in a history of births in Monongalia County, then VA.

Births
Monongalia County WV

Transcribed from microfilm 464964, volume 1 Registry of Births

Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by E. Burns, burns@asu.edu

CAMP Isaac Dec 27, 1749 Isaac/Magdalena Rosenkrans

How that appears in this database, and under the name Camp, is perplexing. One of Isaac/Mary's daughter (Hannah) is listed as Van Camp.

Any info would be appreciated.

Scott Camp

The link for the GenWeb page is: http://files.usgwarchives.org/wv/monongalia/births/birth1853...

Now that time has gone by, much has been added online. The Rosencrans family is very well documented with the extended families [Deckers, DePue, VanCamp, etc]. The copies of the Dutch Reformed Church are also online. I hope to get back to working on this family line as soon as I come to a close, for the time being, on the KNOX and extended family history in the very near future.

I hope to be able to share more information. The orginal post of 2005 started with Marshall Lowe who has contributed alot of helpful research!

Later. Sara Knox McAnally

Thanks for all this info, however, I have a book with this same info in it. I know that Permelia Prall Vancampen is the descendent of Arent Jansen Prall and Maria Billiou, but I don't know where John Vancampen fits in. I have formerly believed he was the descendent of Gerrit Jansen Vancampen and Machtelt Stoffels, but now I am not sure he is not the descendent of Laruent De Camp through his son Johannes Lecompte and the Prall's daughter Maria Prall. The only mention of a John Vancampen, born in 1813 that I could find was in the book, Depuy Family History, Nicholas and Francois from France, Vol. II, by Ruth Heidgerd and Anne Goodwill. There is a John listed there as the son of James Dupuy Vancampen and Cecelia Decker. I have never found another reference to a John Vancampen, b. 1813 since - except in the census of 1850 in Clark Co., IN and his marriage to Permelia Prall in Zanesville, OH in 1834.

Thanks again for all this info.

The marriage was on 11 April 1834 and was performed by Joel Dolbey, Jr. This was from an index of marriages. I don't have a copy of the actual marriage record. On the index, Permelia's named was listed a Ball instead of PRall. Is was simply a mis-transcription of the surname PRALL.

In 1836, while living in Zanesville, OH. John Vancampen sold Permelia's right to inherited land in Washington Co., PA. That was in July of 1836. In Nov of 1837, John and Permelia purchased 40 acres in the Jefferson Twp, of Guernsey Co., OH. In 1846, they followed Permelia's brothers, Asa, Cornelius, Daniel and Thomas to Clark County, Indiana. My gr-grandmother, Hannah Harriet Vancampen was the first of John and Permelia's children to be born in Indiana.

Thanks Marshall and Sara for the replies to my post. It is so wonderful and I am so grateful to have some direction for research on this John Vancampen. Does anyone know where this John Vancampen might have been in 1820 or 1830? He was born in 1813 and all his census records state that he was born in NJ. What family do you think he might fit into? His wife, Permelia Prall was born in Washington Co., PA in 1814. Her father was Thomas Prall, b. abt 1776 in Amwell Twp, Hunterdon Co., NJ. His father was George Prall, b. 1743 in Hunterdon Co., NJ. So, John Vancampen's father was probably born sometime around 1776, give or take a few years.

Thanks again for your replies and any further direction will be greatly appreciated. I have looked at every Vancampen I can find and he doesn't really fit with any of them.

As a footnote, Lot De Camp was in the same town, Henryville, Clark Co., Indiana, in 1860 as John Vancampen and his family were. Lot was born in about 1798 in Washington Co., PA and died in 1868. He is buried in the Mt. Lebonon Cemetery, in Henryville. I think he was the son of Moses De Camp and Martha Rutan.
If you think there is a connection between Lot and John Vancampen, please let me know.

Here's a stab in the dark, but one of my brick walls is my 2-gr grandfather John VANCAMPEN. He was born in 1813 in NJ according to all his census records and he died in 1884 in Coles Co., IL . He and his family always used the name VANCAMPEN instead of VAN CAMP. However, there is a common thread with the locations of this Isaac and Aaron and Lawarence VAN CAMP and my John VANCAMPEN. I have always thought that this John was part of the Warren Co., NJ VANCAMPENS, BUT he married my 2-gr grandmother, Permelia Prall in Zanesville, OH in 1834. I have never understood how and why they were in Zanesville, Muskingum Co., OH in 1834 unless they were with family. Permelia Prall, John's wife, was born in 1814 in Washington Co., PA. In November of 1837, John VANCAMPEN purchased 40 acres of land in Guernsey Co., OH. The certificate was issued to John VAN CAMPEN of Washington, Co. PA.

Is there a possibility that my John VANCAMPEN, b. 1813, might be a part of one of the families of these three VAN CAMP brothers? Any help on this question would be greatly appreciated. John VANCAMPEN's family was in Clark County, Indiana in Henryville by 1841. Permelia Prall's brothers had settled there earlier.

Joanna Smith Dunn
Wow, how can I add to this mystery. First, The Van Campen was dropped in Monongalia Co,VA (WV) to just Camp. It is possible that Aaron could have been a brother to Isaac but there might have been a son named Aaron, as well. Our court records only go back so far. The NSDAR in Washington, DC might be able to clarify your Aaron's. I use to be a registrar for our local chapter and if I remember correctly, Aaron was not listed as a son on application papers for Isaac.
Which made my assumption of Aaron being a son, possibly/probably incorrect.
Another item which through me was Isaac's orgin as being Dutch. I'll have to do a little more digging but I'll get back to you on what I find.
I live below the graveyard where Isaac and his wife Mary, and some family are buried.
A 1784 tax assessment list for Amwell Twp of Washington Co PA lists three Van Camp’s: Isaac, Aaron, and Lawrence. The first two, and likely the third, served in the Abner Howell Co. of the Washington Co Militia. Aaron left a distinct historical footprint in terms of deed records and family cemetery burials, both at present-day Lone Pine. Isaac and Lawrence however soon migrated up the Monongalea River valley to near Morgantown WV. Isaac is first found on Monongalea Co VA tax lists beginning in 1790, and Lawrence the following year…

In his 1833 Monongalea County will, Isaac lists ten living children, Elizabeth, Adam, William, Jemima, Peter, Mary, Dorcas, Hanna, John, and Rachael. Son John remained on the farm, as have his descendents to the present day. Six of Isaac’s children, including your Mary and my William, moved to the Muskingum Co OH area. The others were Elizabeth, Jemima, Peter, and Rachel. The siblings seem to have been closely knit, marrying into the same families, such as Tanner, Thrap, and Hoskinson. When Mary was widowed with two infant daughters, Maria and Mary, brother William became their legal guardian, with Joseph Thrap, the husband of Mary’s sister Jemima being listed as security. ……Isaac Van Camp is listed in the DAR Patriot Index—Centennial Edition as being “b. 12-27-1749 PA d.3-2-1833 VA. m Mary -----Pvt PA” . I believe he could have been born either in PA or NJ.

The local DAR Chapter has replaced the original Burnt Meeting House tombstones of Isaac, and a near-by Ensign Robison. The DAR apparently places flags on the two graves each Memorial Day. I do not recall finding a tombstone for Isaac’s wife.
The Martha Rutan de Camp whom you mention had a brother Samuel. He is mentioned in the Morris Twp Chapter in Crumrine’s 1882 History of Washington County PA. To quote: “ Samuel Rutan, from Sussex County, NJ, established his home in this township [Morris] soon after the close of the Revolutionary War.” ..................................

The father of Samuel and Martha Rutan, Abraham, was a witness to the 1764 will of Johannes decamp/VanCampen which divided the estate between a diseased son John and three daughters. Not mentioned in the will was a surviving son Aaron who had apparently been given his share of the estate, (part of the family homestead), during the father’s lifetime. He continued to live on the family homestead until he died in 1788...................................

The other part of the Johannes decamp/VanCampen farm had been sold off during his lifetime, and living in 1851 on this other part was John Littell, the author of “Family Records or Genealogies of the First Settlers of Passaic Valley and Vicinity above Chatham, with their ancestors and descendents, as far as could be ascertained in 1851.” (The book is on line at www.rootsweb.com/~njmorris/passaicvalley/index.htm.) .Littell was an Elder of the New Providence Presbyterian Church, (as had Abraham Rutan) and describes decamp/VanCampen Presbyterians and related families (e.g. Rutan and Squire) who remained in the area until after the Revolutionary War........................................

The New Providence Presbyterian migration westward was to the village of Prosperity in Morris Twp, of Washington Co PA. In the hill-side Cemetery behind the Upper Ten Mile Presbyterian Church are various decamp/D.Camp graves. . Buried within several days of each other in the year 1832 there are children of Lot and Rachel decamp, aged 6, 4, and 1. Buried in the same cemetery in 1845 w as the Moses D. Camp, who is the likely grandfather of the diseased children.............................................

Should information listing Lot as being born in PA be in correct, it is possible that he was born in NJ as a son of Aaron decamp/VanCampen by his second wife and that he went west with his half brother Moses................. .

The John Van Campen b. 1813 in NJ might also have been a New Providence Presbyterian decamp. If this was the case however I believe that John Littell would have mentioned him...................................................

The Lone Pine Amwell Baptist VanCamp/decamps lived seven miles as the crow flies from the Prosperity Morris Presbyterian D. Camps. Through the Appalachian foothills, it would have been somewhat longer by road. Your ancestors provide the only PA connection that I have found between the Amwell and Morris groups..............................

Would you by any chance know the name of the minister who performed the Zanesville VanCampen—Prall wedding?
Isaac was a common name among the descendents of Dutch emigrant Gerrit Jansen Van Campen of Ulster Co NY. This may explain why the Isaac Van Camp of Monongalia Co. (W)V is listed in published sources as being either of two different Ulster Co NY Isaac Van Campen’s. Both are incorrect. Isaac Van Campen and Magdalena Rosenkrans did indeed have a son Isaac. He was baptized 27 Dec 1743. Isaac Jr. is described in his father’s 1801will as being unmarried, and there is detailed provision for his care at a local Inn in the will. …..There has also been confusion over the identity of the wife of the Monongalia Co VA Isaac Van Camp. There seem to have been two different Robert Worthington’s who related to each other. The two were an uncle and a nephew.. A Mary Worthington, whose father was Robert and whose mother was Margaret Mathews, was the first First Lady of Ohio, by virtue of being the wife of the first Governor, Edward Tiffin. She is even better known as being the brother of Thomas Worthington., considered as the Father of Ohio Statehood. He was the first Ohio US Senator, and second state governor. To distinguish him from other Robert Worthington’s in the family, the nephew was known as “Bobby Dunblaen”. Early on the Worthington’s were a wealthy Quaker family, but “Bobby Dunblaen” seems to have been something of a spend-thrift. He is known to have settled along Jacob’s Creek along what is today the border between Westmoreland and Fayette Counties. He died there in obscurity. Unfortunately he died without a will and apparently an estate, and there is no known list of his children. That he had a daughter Mary cannot be proven, but I think that he did and that she married Isaac. . .

In a 27 Aug 2005 rootsweb VanCampen-L mailing list posting, Cynthia as RV4cats@aol.com asks ‘Is it possible that the Johannes decamp baptized 2 Feb 1679, Amerwsfoort DRC” is the same as “the Johannes married to Mary Prall, the dau of the emigrants Arent Jansen Prall and Maria Pieterse Billiou?” If the answer is yes, as it apparently is, it would explain a lot. ”..................................

According to Cynthias’s posting, Mary Prall had a brother Peter. According to internet postings, Peter’s line has had continuing issue, including a George Prall found in a 1800 Amwell Twp Washington Co PA census. I believe it likely that John Vancampen and Permelia Prall may have been not only husband and wife but also something like fifth cousins..................................................

It was once common (especially among continental Europeans) to name children first after grandparents, and then after the parents themselves. I have come to regard the name Aaron decamp/VanCampen/VanCamp as being something of a genealogical marker. As it occurs in a decamp line, I believe it reveals descent from the emigrant Laurent deCamp’s son Johannes and his wife Mary Prall. .............

The Johannes VanCampen. decamp/VanCampen bapt 2 Feb 1679 illustrates this. In his 1764 will he divides his residual estate into quarters, to be divided among the heirs of a deceased son also named John, and three daughters. The will lists grandson Lawrnece as being the oldest of the deceased John’s sons. ..................

While Lawrence’s brothers are not named, I believe that a brother Aaron decamp married Mary Frazee on 7 March 1759 at the Scotch Plains Baptist Church. (The Scotch Plains Church was a mere half dizen miles down below the “Watsatch Mountain” from the near New Providence home of Johannes and Mary Prall VanCampen.). .............................
In 1847 a different Aaron VanCamp testified before a Claremont Co OH court that some 64 years before in 1783 he had been present at a wedding performed by the Baptist pastor David Sutton of his sister Sarah Josiah Prickett. According to related testimony, the father of the bride and of Aaron was named Lawrnece. .............................
It is significant that David Sutton performed the wedding, and (indeed that Aaron Van Camp should recall the name so long afterward). because the pastor’s parents had been charter members of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church where the younger Aarons’s Uncle Aaron decamp had been married in 1759. ................................................

David Sutton was pastor, and a brother Abraham a member, of the North Ten Mile Baptist Church at what has variously been called Green Springs, Pleasant Valley, and now Lone Pine. It was there also that Aaron decamp/VanCamp had a mill, and where he and wife Mary sold part of his land to Christopher Slusher in 1801. (While Aaron signed the deed as VanCamp, Crumrine in his 1882 History of Washington County Pennsylvania describes how Christopher Slusher “came to this township [Amwell] and settled near the old Decamp (sic) mill, on the north fork of Ten-Mile Creek, the site of the village of Pleasant Valley.” .........................

I have made my own study of Warren Co and other Delaware Water Gap VanCampen’s and am quite confident that no one in that family settled at an early date in Washington Co PA. Instead, I regard your posting as providing further evidence that we both descend from the emigrant Laurent deCamp’s son John through the son John who prediseased him. I just wish that I could prove it. ....................................
Isaac Van Camp was born 27 Dec 1749 amd married Mary Worthington 25 June 1777

There is no record of a son named Aaron but they did have children as follows: Elizabeth, Adam, William, Jemima, Peter, Rachel, Martha, Mary, Hannah, Dorcus, and John.

I descend from William, who with several others migrated to Muskingum Co OH.

Descendents of John remain in the area, and indeed as I understand it on a small remaining portion of the original farm.

I have been so interested in the conversations regarding the Washington County, PA, and New Jersey Frazee/DeCamp/VanCamp names. My great great grandfather was Peter Camp. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1804. He married Rosanna Smalley who was born in New Jersey in 1805. I have never been able to connect him to Aaron Van Camp. I have seen his name listed as Peter D Camp in some records. The interesting connection to me is that on the back of a photograph of him it states his father was a Methodist minister and his mother was a Frazee. I have unfortunately never been able to discover any other member of his family or even where he came from. He is listed as being born in Pennsylvania by his children in census records.

I will work from the present back on this one:

I am Jim Van Campen, born 1958 in Whittier, California
youngest son of John Gerrit Van Campen.

My father John Gerrit Van Campen was born 1922 in Minneapolis, Mn.
He was the only son of Charles Howard Van Campen and Cora Taney Van Campen. He fought in the Pacific theater in WWII and was stationed at Camp Pendelton near San Diego during the Korean War. That is how this branch of Van Campens is now in California. Cora Taney Van Campen was from St Joe, MO; but her ancestry is from Emmitsburg Maryland back to 1650. Her 3nd great uncle was the supreme court chief justice, Roger Brooke Taney, who presided over the Dred Scott case in 1850.

My Grandfather, Charles Howard Van Campen (1872-1933) was born in Chicago IL. His family settled in Rochester, Minnesota in 1874. Howard attended University in the Twin Cities and settled in Minneapolis. He was a fairly prominant lawyer and insurance underwriter there from about 1910-1933.

My Great Grandfather, Charles Van Campen (1843-1920)was born in Pahaquarry Township, Warren Co, New Jersey. He was the son of Abraham Van Campen and Mary Depue. His family immigrated to Lee County, Illinois and homesteaded a farm in 1856. He was in Army of the Cumberland during the Civil War, and his letters home, as well as his personal diary, are still with my family records. After the war, he became a rail agent for the Chicago & Northwestern, and settled in Rochester, Minn. He was civic minded, and served on the City Council and the Board of Education. He was married to Mary Louise Elkins in 1868, in Mendota, ILL.

Children of Charles Van Campen and Mary Elkins:

Cora Irene(b. 1869 in Chicago) married Henry strong Adams.
Charles Howard( b. 1872 in Chicago) as noted above
Mary Elsie (b. 1874 in Rochester)married John Crew.
{I was told that the Crew operated the major hotel in Rochester that catered to all who would visit the Mayo Clinic.}
Mabel Grace (b. ???) married ????
Homer Abram (b. 1880 in Rochester)married Sarah Campbell.
{children of Homer and Sarah: Charles, Lawrence, Robert, Mary Alice, Mabel Cecelia}

My 2nd great Grandfather would then have been Abraham Van Campen who married Mary Depue in New Jersey.
This is where I would need to do my research, then.

Hi Nancy,

My name is Cathy Longoria and I wanted to see if you still had the Van Campen family site going? I tried the e-mail you had listed, but it bounced back. If you still do, I'd love to get some information from you. Samuel Van Campen (son of Cornelius) is my 6th G-Grandfather. My e-mail is cathylongoria@hotmail.com

Thank you so much!
Barb

You had asked about John Knox who is buried in BMHC. I have made notation of him in my notes, but no confirmed connection as yet. By his age, he could be a cousin or young brother of Levi. Although, John is not mentioned in Thomas' court records like the other younger children [Anne, Salley, Levi-even Bethuel & Tilman were mentioned] who still needed care after his death in 1796. This leads one to believe he is not a brother of Levi & Tilman Knox. If Thomas had a brother, he could be a nephew of Thomas. Thomas Knox' records were found in Delaware. Some say that Thomas was a Rev War Patriot. He could have been if he was born cir 1746 but this is unconfirmed.

It took many, many years to prove that Thomas was the father of Levi, etc. The trail is cold but with all the new information online hopefully it won't take as many years to clear up John Knox' lineage and Thomas' patriotism.
Sara
mcanally9@centurytel.net

Regarding Rebecca Camp... I have no record of a Rebecca Camp/Van Camp nor any Rebecca married to a Camp/Van Camp in my recorded records. I have some data that has not been input.

Thought I would touch base...... One of the items you questioned was Mary Worthington's connection to Isaac Van Camp. Found some backup copy. Birth Records, Vol. 1 'Registry of Births' Monongalia County, WV microfilm #464964. The electronic copy can be printed online (US GenWeb). I chose to cut and paste, by sections, to a word doc. Can provide if you want.

FYI I refer to all of the Roberts as Robert. I just recently started working with them and since Jr is the 3rd Robert it just doesn't make sense to me... and, I know of the other ones nickname.

Birth Record Findings (transcribed as is):
Mary Worthington b Sep 15 1757 parents, Robert/Margaret Mathews
Robert Worthington b 1730 parents, Robert/Mary Burtis
Isaac Camp b Dec 27 1749 parents, Isaac/Magdalena Rodenkrans

others connected:
Hannah Van Camp b Oct 27 1791 parents, Isaac/Mary Worthington

Thomas Smallwood Wilson b Nov 1791 parents, Thomas Smallwood/Mary Van Camp
William Wilson b May 1783 parents, Thomas Smallwod/Mary

I haven't input this info yet but it is a County document. Better than heresay and actually good for the time period.

* Any chance you would know of anyone who lives around the Burnt Meeting Place Cemetery, near Morgantown, WV? Quote: Graveyard near "River Road" between Morgantown & Booth, 3 1/2 miles from Morgantown. There was a stone for Isaac but none for wife, Mary. Unquote. Col.
Oh my, the plot just keeps thickening......I knew this data was mixed up but I didn't know how badly. You have a good handle on it.

First I want to let you know that I have requested a picture of both Isaac's and Mary's headstones from Find A Grave. Awaiting receipt.

So, if I am understanding this new information [to me], Isaac the Monongalia Patriot is our 4G-Grandfather. That remains a fact. Isaac was married to Mary, maybe Bobby [Dunblean] Worthington's daughter. Almost certainly not a daughter, Mary, of the 2 other Robert Worthington's that contributors are quoting.

We believe that Aaron and another Van Camp serving in the military in Washington County PA were probably related to our Monongalia Isaac VC.

Some quote Isaac as born in Washington Co PA vs Monongalia Co. Your opinion?

Was Isaac living in Wash. Co. PA at the time he enlisted or was the Monongalia Co V/WV area patriots recruited for the Wash. Co. PA miltia?

This is as much as I need to clarify for now. I need to put the few facts and theory's into some order.

Awaiting another of your concise writings.

WELCOME JOANNA,

Zanesville, Muskingum Co OH is where my Levi Knox was granted property after his Civil War service. He married Mary VanCamp Morgan. She was widowed early with 2 small children. Levi and Mary migrated to Ohio early 1800's. I don't have my papers in front of me but I wanted to let you know where the connection may or may not be depending on the time frame. Knox' were in the farming areas of southern Ohio. Zanesville also farmland. Later migrating northward. My grandmother was raised in Guernsey County, my grandfather, George [a family name] grew up in Vinton County, Ohio. After their marriage, they migrated to Akron Ohio along with a couple of his brothers and my grandmothers parents, the Dickerson's.....all to work at the rubber factories. Farming and coal mining were the occupations in the southern part of the state. My immediate Knox' & Dickerson's became town folk, thereafter.

Hope this catches you up on how I came into this 'thread'. Then, Marshall and I found that Isaac VanCamp, the Patriot, was our 4G-Grandfather.............and so the story continues with your input.

Marshall's theories come into play with your message.

I have a few copies of Rev.War reimbursements to Aaron, Lowrance as it is spelled on the sheet, and Isaac. Aaron did the marketing for his unit [it seems]. He was reimbursed for flour, provisions and even pasturage of cattle. Aaron is referenced as VanCampen 3 out of the 4 sheets.

Sara Knox McAnally

Intriguing theories and facts. I have a CD from FamilyTree Maker on French Huguenot's. I pulled it when you mentioned them in a note last week but have not reviewed it. Will do so.

Still awaiting Isaac's service record. I posted a message on Vinton County board and Knox board at Genealogy.com about obituaries. I have clippings for Albert 1919, Alice 1941, son Levi & daughter, Lizzie that name family members but the newspaper & date published is not included. For DAR, unusable. My searches have been fruitless. I also have documents that state that Eveline 1860 and George 1910 had obit's but they are among the missing right now. Fact: George outlived 3 wives.

I must get ahold of the Crumrine book. I found it in a library in Vegas and it had so much information, including my grandmothers early Dickerson line. The Dickerson's had grist mills and were land barons............... Times do change.

If anyone can make the VanCamp/deCamp connection, I can see you bing the one to do it. Don't give up...........

Hello Gretchen,

Yes, you are a cousin. Homer and Sarah would have been my great uncle and aunt. I have a bit of family history, including profiles for my grandfather Howard, and great-grandfather, Charles Abrham from Rochester, MN.
I have the lineage traced back to Gerritt Jansen Van Campen who had arrived in the New Amsterdam colony in 1658.

I was contacted earlier this year by another cousin in Oroville, CA who is a granddaughter of Homer as well. Her parents were Charles and Mary Van Campen, and her name is Joan Lee Van Campen. She had also sent to me family information and photos of her family, Homer & Sadie, Charles, and Mabel VC Kahler.

There is a webpage with the title of DeckerFamilyJourney.com which is a great resource for early Van Campens in the Warren County and Sussex County area in New Jersey.

My e-mail is jimvancampen@hotmail.com. Send me an e-mail and I will send you what I have. My did pass on back in 1994, but my Mom, who is also a native Minneapolitan, will be 87 next week. She is still a resource on family stuff, but sometimes a bit unsure of some of the details.

Information in regard to Isaac Van Camp’s military service can be found in Pennsylvania Archives Series VI, Volume 2. He is listed as serving in the Washington County Militia 1781-82 in the 3rd Battalion, commanded by Lt. Col. David Williamson of Donegal Twp...
He served in the so-called 4th Class of Captain Abner Howell’s Company. (A class seems in effect to have been a platoon.) On p. 119 of the Archives, the name of Isaac Van Camp can be found as a member of an eleven member class. There are two different but overlapping lists of this 3rd Class. Presumably personnel changed over time. On p. 112 there is another list of the same 4th class, now with ten members. It is more specifically labeled “A Return of 3rd and 4th Class Capt. Abner Howell’s Company 3rd Battalion, Washington County Militia September 4th, 1782.” Changes have taken place in the roster, one name is new, and three names from the earlier list have been omitted. Isaac Van Camp evidently continued in militia service, now being listed as Isaack Van Camp....
I believe that I know the identity of a Van Camp cousin who joined DAR on the basis of descent from Isaac VanCamp. I will try to help you get in touch with her....

I am puzzled by your reference to a will of a Robert Worthington who would have been the father-in-law of Isaac Van Camp. I am not aware of any proof that Isaac Van Camp was married to a Mary Worthington. If her maiden name was Worthington, she would however likely have been the daughter of a Robert (Booby Dunblean) Worthington who lived on Jacobs Creek in adjoining Westmoreland County. He is described however ( in Kentucky Family Records, Vol. IX, p. 8ff) as dieing intestate in Westmoreland County soon after May 1788....

Serving in Isaac’s same ten or eleven member class was Aaron Van Camp. In the same Company’s 8th class was a Lowrence Vanamp (sic) who I believe to be a member of the same Van Camp family....

It has been reported that a 1783 tax listx Isaac Van Camp as owning 210 acres immediately adjacent to a 400 acre parcel and grist mill owned by Aaron Van Camp. Crumrine’s 1882 History of Washington County Pennsylvania notes that this location jad become known as the site of a former deCamp grist mill. Likely the family was of French Huguenot descent by 1664 New Amsterdam emigrant Laurent deCamp.

Thank you for responding. I have a few pages of the PA Archives that you reference (title pg, 118, 119). It is going to be used as backup documentation. With the additional info I have, I believe what they are asking for is overkill, but I must do what they ask...... The DAR # of your relative that went in on Isaac would be wonderful. No one had gone in on Mary "Levi Knox and Mary Van Camp [Knox} daughter of Isaac Van Camp". Plus, it is a known fact that he was a Patriot. It's even on his tombstone. Mary, wife of Isaac, is buried in the same Burnt Meeting House Cemetery with him. Oh well.

As for the remainder of your message I must put it on hold for now... I apologize. I have many questions on the Van Camps and the Worthington's. Between the 2 Isaac Van Camp families and a number of Robert Worthington's in the same family, it's my feeling that this puzzle needs some real work :)...but none of it comes into play with what I am doing right now, thank goodness. I have seen and referenced the Crumrine book myself. I also conferred with Dorothy Crumrine Rutherford earlier this year when I was contemplating using a Dickerson relative as my patriot. [Her documentation is microfilmed at LDS.]

I would like to delve into your questions after I have finished with this project. Please keep me in the loop and I will do the same. My email is in the other posting. Feel free to contact me at that address. I'm putting these postings in a folder for future reference. Thanks,
Sara Knox McAnally
