There are not that many other Joesten's in the country, there is Melvin (you will find his name on lots of chemistry papers),
There is a John Joesten (not sure of the names of his siblings) who had a son named Leonard, who had a son named Raymond (you find his name in many geology papers) with Abbie Maybee (decended from the original owners of the 'maybee tavern' in NY where Benedict Arnold's co conspirator Was hung in what we would now call the parking lot)
Ray had two sons
Peter, and Robert
So hey, Im Rob
My real interest is how far back Asperger's runs in the family. my niece, used to refer to herself in the second or third person. her dad was the shyest person you would ever meet, and his wife used to flap her hands when she was happy/exited.
I have been formally diagnosed with aspergers.
My father (Ray) and his brother (G) and likely his sister(B) all present symptoms far more than I do/have (dad was obsessed with how the physical earth worked, now prof emeritus, in geology/chemistry, went to caltec, and had not heRd Jimmy Hendrix untill the mid 80's when my brother and i started listening, inspite of living in the bay area throughout the 60s, his brothef eas the marina county health inspector, who woulduse his vacations to see specific trains, and has built more miles of track than Delaware has roads.
Grandpa (leonard Joesten) collected stamps based on their postmarks (eg a postmark from the city of somenes birth from the same date was cherished above any upside down airplanes, he started 2 title companies)
One of his brothers sons son could fix any broken radio or electric/ electronic device (at that time radios were about all that had transisters, and these were only the newest models ) though he couldnt graduate from the 8th grade.

Myself, I am a highschool dropout, who earned thier BA with cum laude honors, and work as a support staff (various titles from employment specialist to house manager) for adults on the spectrum.

VanBrunt-Fair family of Charleston, SC

More info: Elizabeth Jane Fair VB's mother came with her mother, Ann Harrison and two brothers (Joseph and James Harrison) from Cavan Co., Ireland to Charleston SC before 1800. Her mother being widowed put Elizabeth and Joseph in the Charleston Orphanage followed by the youngest within a year. The widow, Ann remarried a carpenter, Robert Galbreath/Gilbreath who took the two boys out of the orphanage indentured to his profession. Ann indentured Elizabeth to her household. Elizabeth married the boot and shoemaker, Richard Fair in 1804 and had his shop at 170 King St. which was renumbered to 337 King St. where most of the Fair children were born. There is a Marriage Settlement (likened to a Pre-nup agreement) between Elizabeth and her second husband, Joseph DeWitt Nicks (a Tutor) before their marriage in 1818 to protect the Fair Children. There are also several Mesne Conveyances from around 1817 to beyond the 1830s pertaining to the property and specifically naming the two girls (Elizabeth Jane and Frances) and their spouses as well as naming the children by name after their father (Richard) died in October 1817. If you go to Ancestry and look for Richard Fair and Elizabeth Harrison, you should find several local newspaper notices as to RF's move to what became 337 King St. and also the Fair girls step-father, Joseph D. Nicks' occupation at the same address. [If you visit King St. in Charleston today, the 337 address houses a restaurant and according to the history of houses on King St. was completely rebuilt around 1850].

Richard VanBrunt in Charleston, SC mar. Elizabeth Jane Fair

Rich. VanBrunt was a bookbinder in Charleston. His wife, Elizabeth Jane Fair also worked with him. They had their business on Bay St. Elizabeth was the first of the Fair children (Mary Ann, Sophia, Frances, Elizabeth and Joseph) to marry. The oldest (Mary Ann) did not marry until 1832 in Thomasville, GA to James Russell Greene. The first of the Fair girls to leave Charleston was my ancestor, Frances Fair. She married James Rinaldo Nicks of Thomasville, GA on November 1831 in Charleston. His mother, Eleanor Nicks had purchased about 200 acres of land on the north side of Lake Iamonia just east of the Strickland Arm. Within a few years they were joined by the entire Fair family including their mother, Elizabeth Harrison Fair Nicks who had remarried one Joseph DeWitt Nicks after the death of he first husband, Richard Fair. She had two daughters (Sarah Ann and Martha) by Joseph who was dead by the 1830s. Elizabeth Jane and Richard Van Brunt were the last of the related families to join the group all living on the north side of Lake Iamonia and inside the enumerated families for the 1840 U. S. Census. After 1840, the only two Fair girls remaining in Florida were Elizabeth Jane and Frances. The others, including Sophia who married Allen Burr of Jefferson Co., FL moved into GA and finally to Opelika (then in Russell Co., but now Lee Co., AL). Mary Ann Fair Greene;s dau. returned to FL and married Richard VB, the oldest son of Elizabeth Jane and Richard VB. The two half sisters (Sarah Ann and Martha) mar a Sauls and Mizell/Durr respectively. The brother, Joseph Harrison Fair mar. J. R. Greene's sister, Martha Mariah Greene in Leon Co. After 1850, Frances' family moved to Hernando Co. leaving Elizabeth Jane's family who were last in Leon Co. as the longest living Fair families to live in Leon Co.

Elizabeth Jane Fair VanBrunt--Charleston, SC

Elizabeth Jane Fair was born in Charleston, SC to Richard Fair and Elizabeth Harrison (dau/o John & Ann Harrison of Cavan Co., Ireland). After arriving in Charleston, Ann was widowed with 2 sons and 1 dau. She placed all three in the Charleston Orphanage. Ann remarried a Robert Galbreath who indentured the two boys to his carpentry occupation. Ann indentured her dau to her household.

Eliz. married Richard Fair c1804 and purchased a house at 170 King St. in downtown Charleston. He was a Boot and Shoemaker. The address was changed to 337-339 King St. Richard died in 1817 leaving Eliz. a widow with 7 children. She remarried at the end of 1818 to the Tutor, Joseph DeWitt Nicks and had 3 more children. Two daughter (Martha and Sara) survived and also lived in FL.

I wrote a story on all the Fair children and their spouses for the Tallahassee, Leon Co. Heritage book connecting them to the so called "...Lost Cousins" that a Greene descendant published c1989 and the two books that Charles Fair (gr. son/o Joseph Harrison Fair) wrote in the 1950s. His books lost the real parents and the two half-sisters by Nicks + my ancestor, Frances Fair who mar. James Rinaldo Nicks in Nov. 1831 in Charleston. That's where Rinaldo originated. Jas. R. Nicks was the first one to arrive in Thomasville, GA and in 1833 in the Lake Iamonia land that all came to. If any and all ae interested, I can give you the locations of Eliz. and Richard VB in downtown Charleston. Charles

Hi distant cousin.
I can assure you that the Van Brunts did not come over on the Mayflower.
While the Pilgrims onboard the Mayflower did indeed live in Leiden, the Netherlands, for 20 years, they were all English in birth, and the Pilgrim/Mayflower records are well documented.
Regards,
David Van Brunt

Hi, Sorry I am so long in replying to this post.

I have been away from genealogy for quite a while, and need to look at my family tree to refresh my memory about the Van Brunts. My grandfather was Andrew Richard, who married Susie Land Diedrich. If my research is correct, his parents were Francis and Elizabeth, and Johnnie was a sister. I remember hearing about Trixie, but do not have her anywhere in my tree.

I have never visited the Strickland & Van Brunt cemetaries. Visited Annie (Van Brunt) McRay, and we tried to find the cemetaries,, but were unable to do so.

Will try to get back with you soon to compare notes. I know I have a lot of missing information.

Lisa; Can we somehow connect family trees at the common ancestor so there aren't duplicates? I'm not sure how this works.I think mine is set up as public so you can view it also. You'll see where Johnnie's mother-in-law, Daniel Emmette Atkinson's mother, is Sophie VanBrunt. She is the sister of Francis S VanBrunt (their parents were Richard & Elish Jane).

I would like to get some picture if they exist of the family or house.

I have no relationship to your George but I am in Mankato and if you wish can research for you.

Can tell you that they were granted 160 acres by the United States as a homstead, and she and George heirs received a deed in May 23, 1857 stated as George deceased. Listed are Henrietta E. Foster and Mary E Soule (daughters) In 1857 the land was plotted and added to Mankato as Van Brunt addition, Mankato.

There is an entry in 1874 of a Flora E. McMurtrie wife of James with a foreclosed mortgage, and a quick claim deed to Mary E. Soule and S.G. Soule in Oct 1877 and in 1881 a Ozias.P. & Eugenia R. Smith purchased the land. From that time 1881 on the rest of the land was sub-divided and sold by Smith, this is now known as the Van Brunt addition.

Interesting to me is that a D. W.
Hi Marie,

It is good to hear from another Van Brunt! My gg grandparents are also Francis S. Van Brunt and Elizabeth Sessions. Johnnie's sister, Elizabeth Jane, married Gillum Blount Strickland. Their daughter, Livie Mae, who is my grandma married John Travis Ouzts, my grandpa.

I cannot find the gravesites of Francis S or Elizabeth. There are many unmarked graves in the Van Brunt cemetery so I may never find their burial place. I don't even know if they are buried there.

I have also heard from another Van Brunt relative that the Van Brunts came over on the Mayflower. I am familiar with the Joost Van Brunt book written by Tenius Bergen. I am sure there is a connection because on the 1880 census', Francis (Frank) lists his father a being born in New York.

I did not have a spouse listed for Johnnie in my family tree. I am going to add the names you gave me.

Have you looked at my family tree yet? It's public on Ancestry.com. It's title is Lyles-Ouzts Family Tree.

I look forward to sharing any info we can scratch up on our Van Brunts. Thanks for getting in contact with me.

Lisa Ouzts Lyles

Hi, I just joined Ancestry.com & found that we share some of my Van Brunt line. I'm not sure how to jump into a thread & hope I'm not being rude by just replying to an existing post.

I was born & raised in Tallahassee and moved to Jacksonville about 32 years ago. My mother & grandparents grew up around Lake Immonia & grandaddy was a game warden on the plantation. I also have visited the Strickland & Van Brunt cemeteries out off North Meridian Rd in Tallahassee.

I did a lot of research on the Van Brunt's many years ago, but had to put the effort away for a while & now I'm picking it back up again. I am related to Richard Van Brunt b. abt 1801 in S. C. through his son, my gg grandfather, Francis Van Brunt who married Elizabeth (Betty) Sessions, and their daughter Johnnie Sherrod Van Brunt (yes, Johnnie is a female), she is my great grandmother. She married Daniel Emmette Atkinson, (whose mother was Sophie Van Brunt, another of Richard's daughters, so they were first cousins), and they had my grandmother, Sophie Lee Atkinson (Trixie) who married John Herbert Green, Jr.

I too am trying to identify Richard's parents. I even tried to work backwards from Joost Van Brunt's line (they came over on the Mayflower, he was born in Holland in 1599), but can't seem to make the connection between Richard & these Van Brunt's. I'm believe I'm just one generation off to be able to make the connection & that would Richard's father. Tenius Bergen wrote a book back in 1867 documenting all of the Van Brunt family at that time. I photo copied it from the public library here in Jacksonville.

Anyway, I would love to share information with you and the others who have been posting about Richard Van Brunt. Please contact me & let's compare notes.

Unaware of Jane or James. Elleanor may be Ellen. Think listed in Teunis Bergen's book, but I have no further info.

Eva - I really appreciate your efforts! The info you've gathered is familiar to me - I've been able to bring the family forward, but am now looking for his ancestry. My thought is that he may be related to other DICKINSONs found in Livingston, but have been unable to connect to them.

I will check the Livingston Co history for Amanda Douglas. Are you saying she is connected to James C. Dickinson? Also, does your mention of the Howland book mean you've found a Dickinson connection there?

I should note that other family trees online have errors in death date for James; what you've noted would be accurate.

Also, this is not my personal family - I'm assisting a friend with his research. In our family, we've connections to the Hatfield Massachusetts DICKINSON family.

I'm also interested in Isaac Van Brunt in Livingston Co, MI. Born c1810, NY, he is living with Amos and Sarah (WHITNEY) DICKINSON in 1850 Brighton, Livingston Co. In 1860, he's with the widow Sarah DICKINSON in Handy Twp, Livingston, MI. In 1870, he's with widow Amanda DOUGLASS (widow of Samuel B.); in 1880, he's with Amanda DOUGLASS again, along with her grandchildren, Mary, Emma and Everett PARKER, children of Myron PARKER and Sarah DOUGLASS.

Isaac remained single, according to these census.

I'm searching for information re: James C. DICKINSON, who is also in Handy Twp in 1850, with his second wife Sarah Jane INGERSOLL. James moved to Michigan between 1848-50 from New York. He died in March 1878 in Handy Twp. Amos had been there since late 1820s. I'm attempting to determine whether there's a connection between these Dickinson families.

Sorry to mis-lead you. I added the part about Amanda Douglas thinking some others might want that information. But when I was writing it I guess I forgot and thought you had mentioned Amanda Douglas. But I would not be surprised if your James who was living in Fowlervile was connected somehow. And again, anyone who was related to Amos Dickinson would be a descendant of John Howland also, according to the book. It also gives his father as Amos Dickinson in the book. Anyone interested would probably find the book in their library. I just ordered my from the local book shop. Glad you asked me about that as I should have not just added it so quickly without giving it more thought. Good luck. Eva B

The rescue Lodge no. 805 I.O. of G.T. held Monday evening last to heartily condole with the family and relatives of our deceased brother.

Also I found: Ivan Carroll Dickinson born Fowlerville 28 Jan. 1892 son of Edward Carroll Dickinson.
Note concerning the Van Brunt book: The author at the beginning did say that not all information in the book was complete, because people had moved and couldn't be easily researched.

Note concerning Nicholas Van Brunt: in the book he only has 2 boys but if you check the 1820 and 1830 census' in Goshen, Orange, New York you will see that he did have more kids. In fact my husbands line comes from Nicholas' son Robert Wilkshire. Robert's Death certificate lists his parents as Nicholas Van Brunt and ??anda Whitney (or Whiting; handwriting is hard to read). Nicholas had moved his family to Michigan about 1832. This is what I have on the Nicholas family:

Nicholas Van Brunt
died: aft 1850 in Athens, Calhoun, Michigan
moved to Michigan: abt 1832
spouse: Mary Whiting (or Whitney)
died: Jan 1850 in Athens, Calhoun, Michigan
Kids:
1. John Van Brunt
born: 1807 in New York
died: 25 Mar 1873 in Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan
spouse: Elizabeth
2. Ellsworth Van Brunt
3. Thomas E Van Brunt
born: Aug 1821 in Goshen, Orange, New York
died: Nov 1901 in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan
spouse: Caroline
4. Robert Wilkshire Van Brunt
born: 8 Dec 1826 in Goshen, Orange, New York
died: 10 Aug 1904 in St Joseph, Berrien, Michigan
spouse 1: Frances Ann Dyer
married: 1 Jan 1853 in Van Buren, Michigan
divorced: abt 1867
kids: George, Frederick, Ida Marie (my husbands g-grandmother)
spouse 2: Keziah Root
married: 8 Sept 1867 in St Joseph, Berrien, Michigan
kids: Mary Jane, Harriet, Rachel Lillian, James Henry, Mabel Viola, Sarah "Sadie", Robert, Emily, Holly.
5. Joseph A Van Brunt (not 100% sure yet if he fits in with Nicholas. I believe that he does because he too lived in the same area as Nicholas and his known sons.)
born: about 1824 in New York
died: aft 1880

Hi Suzanne:

Was your grandfather Richard Van Brunt SR or JR? What were the names of his children? My gg grandfather was Francis S. Van Brunt, b. 1832, (son of Richard Van Brunt, SR. Francis S. Van Brunt married Elizabeth Sessions. Richard Van Brunt SR ALSO had a son, Richard Van Brunt JR, who was born around 1825. Did your Grandpa Andrew Richard have a sister named Bunnie and a brother named Blont(sp?)?
Looking forward to your reply.

Lisa Ouzts

Hi Suzanne,

Your reply made my day. My gg grandmother is Elizabeth Jane Van Brunt, sister of your grandfather, Andrew. I do not know if Richard Jaques is a JR since I do not know Richard Van Brunt's (b. 1801) middle name. I only made an assumption. I do not know much past Richard 1801 except that his father was supposedly born in New York.

I am in the same boat as you as far as getting interested in finding my family roots at a late time in my life. Most of the ones that could have given some valuable history are gone. I knew there were some Van Brunts in Miccosukee and I wondered if they were related to the Van Brunts of Lake Iamonia. Apparently they are.

The Van Brunt Cemetary is in Leon County, off County Rd 12 on Lake Iamonia Landing Rd. We just visited it this past Sunday. When you turn onto Lake Iamonia Landing Rd, the cemetary is roughly about a half mile down on the right, about 40 - 50 feet off the road. There is an old fence around the cemetary and there are only about 5 marked graves there. There are probably more graves there. I am still looking for the graves of Francis S and Elizabeth. I have no idea where they are buried. I still have a lot of gaps to fill in also.

Incidently, I also live in GA.

Lisa

This is probably not what you are referring to but just on the off chance I thought I would reply. Virginia VanBrunt dau of Aaron J and Elizabeth Moody, married William McGaugh, their daughter Louise married a Choctaw indian, Osbourne Nelson. He was registered as 1/2 on the Dawes rolls but per family members he was full blood. They claim he was not registered as such due to land ownership limitations. This is word of mouth so I have no documentation to support it.

John died in 1863 and is buried in the Old Sixteenth Cemetery, a very obscure and nearly non-existent cemetery in rural Hancock County, IL. They had 10 children. I have noted that she died in 1870 but not sure, no data to back it up. Any help out there?

Hi Lisa,

I am so excited! I have been working on my family tree today. I was trying to enter sources for a lot of my information. I don't know where I got the name "Jacques". I can't find any documentation showing where I got it. So that might be wrong.

I didn't know Richard's father was supposedly born in NY. I've been searching in SC and FL. Maybe I need to change my course of searching.

I noticed on your tree on Ancestry.com, that you have a lot of dates for deaths of various people. Is this from personal knowledge or did you find something somewhere to document it? I have just taken an on-line Genealogy class and the teacher keeps harping about "documenting" everything. I can't seem to find any death records for anybody except my Grandpa. I'm trying to do things right!!

Did your gg grandmother marry a Strickland? When we went to see Mama's cousin in Miccosukee, she had started working on a family tree and had Elizabeth married to ? Strickland. I'm not sure how much of her info is correct, but that is where I got a lot of mine and then tried to document it. That's probably not the right way to go about it, but it kinda gave me a place to start.

Who is buried in the Van Brunt Cemetary? I know my Grandpa is buried in Jacksonville, but have no idea about anybody else. We took pictures of the markers when my grandmother died.

I tried to pull up a map on Mapquest to see how far Lake Iamonia was from us. Would you believe there are 2 Lake Iamonia's in FL? Anyway, I think it is about 5 1/2 hours from here, so I don't guess I'll be trying to find it soon. I am in Newnan, GA, about 30 miles south of Atlanta.

This is the first time I've made contact with anybody through the message board and I would love to share/compare information. Can't we do that with an Outline Descendant Report?

Look forward to your reply.

Suzanne

Hi Lisa,

YEA! I've made a connection.
Andrew Richard, born 1888 (grandfather) married Susie Land Diedrich
Francis S., born about 1832 (g grandfather) married Elizabeth Sessions
Richard, born about 1801 (gg grandfather) married Elizabeth Jane Fair. He did have a son, Richard Jacques, born around 1825, but I didn't know he was a JR.

And yes, my Grandpa Andrew Richard had a sister named Bunnie and a brother named Blount. (I'm not sure about the spelling either). I've heard my mother and grandmother talk about Aunt Bunnie and Uncle Blount many times. I think I even met Aunt Bunnie MANY years ago.

My Grandpa died in 1930, so I never met him, but my Grandma lived until 1983. Unfortunately, I wasn't interested in genealogy until several years ago. Mama died in 2005, but when I would ask her about the Van Brunt side of the family, all she ever said was "They came over on the Mayflower". I'm not sure if she didn't know or didn't want me to know. We took Mama to visit her cousin, Nora, daughter of Johnnie (f) VB, in Micosoukie,(sp?) FL in 1998 and tried to find the "Van Brunt Cemetary" which they both thought was around there. Couldn't find anything, and they both insisted they didn't know anything about their ancestors. So about all I know are names and what information I have found through checking out the census'.

Looking forward to hearing from you again, sharing information and filling in lots of gaps. By the way, I live in GA.

Suzanne

Hi Lisa,
Richard Van Brunt was my gg grandfather. I do not have any information about him except what I found on the Census. In fact, I was not even sure of the last name of his wife until I read your query. I do have SOME information on his children, their children, etc. If you have any information you could share with me regarding their life (or any of the Van Brunt's life) in Leon County, I would appreciate it. I haven't been working on this too long, so you probably have much more than I do, but I would love to combine what we have. My grandparents were Andrew Richard and Susie L. Van Brunt. Hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

Suzanne
