I'm looking for information on Mary Ann Vamplew who married John Portus probably somewhere near Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Our family records have the marriage date as 1 Sept 1863.

Four of 10 children were born in England before 1870. The children who were born in England are Elizabeth Ann Portus b 1864, in Tumby and d 1864; Georgiana b 1865, in Coningsby; William Dennis b 1867, in Nether Hallam; John Henry b 1869 [place not known]. The family sailed for America in the spring of 1870. While waiting for their sailing date, they were staying with Vamplew relatives in Tumby Woodside according to a letter I have [from John] to an uncle and aunt here in Illinois. There must have been a "Betsy" in that home because she was mentioned in the letter. She couldn't be John & Mary Ann's because only Georgiana, William and John Henry were alive then. The uncle could have been a Rouse [aquired a copy of the letter from a Rouse a few years back]. I don't have any idea how that name enters the Vamplew family, but one of J & MA's children was named David Rouse Porteous.

I have been searching for information on parents of both Mary Ann and John. I have many possibilities but nothing concrete.

Spellings of the V name show up in church records in Ivanhoe, Illinois as Van Plew and Vamplew. There was a John and James.

I would appreciate any information about this family group in England.
