SCHERERVILLE, INDIANA - Thomas Joseph Vahey, 82, passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014.

Tom Vahey was the second of six children of Walter and Margaret Vahey.

He started as an apprentice electrician at Youngstown Sheet and Tube steel mill.

While working, he attended Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio and earned his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering.
At YSU, he met Agnes Benita Cassidy, the love of his life, wife of 53 years, and mother of their five children.
He obtained his professional engineering license, was a project engineer, owner of three patents, and after transferring to LTV steel in Indiana, he worked as a problem-solver and later as a consultant. He was loving, gentle, smart, intuitive, analytical, creative, unbelievably practical, and able to divide his time. He was a great patriarch of his family.
Thomas Vahey will live on in our hearts as we hear him whisper to us every day.


He is survived by his children, John T. (Joahna) Vahey, Jean Vahey MD, James W. (Minh) Vahey MD, Edward P. (Imelda) Vahey DMD MS, and Barb (Dick) Lulay; his grandchildren, Celeste, Ernest, Gage, Breana, Grace, Hannah, Matthew, Selena, Nicole, Jason, Kristina, Matthew, Patrick, Caitlin, and Riley; his brother, Al; sisters Jane, Helen, and Dorothy; and numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Agnes Benita; his parents, Walter and Margaret Vahey; and his sister, Margaret.

Visitation will be held at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave., Route 41, St. John, Ind., today, Sept. 12, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, from 9 to 10 a.m. Services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014.

The funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church in Schererville, IN.

The prayer service and burial will take place in Peoria, Illinois, on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at Resurrection Cemetery at 10 a.m.
