FARMDALE – A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the McCauley Funeral Home, for Thomas J. Vagas, 85, who passed away Monday morning at Austinwoods Nursing Center.
Mr. Vagas was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) a son of John M. and Mary Ann Puhalla Vagas and was a lifelong member of the community.
He was employed by the City of Youngstown in the Waste Water Treatment plant and retired in 1987 as the maintenance supervisor.
Mr. Vagas was an Army veteran, was a member of Jednota the First Catholic Slovak Union, loved to play cards and was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Youngstown, OH.
Mr. Vagas is survived by a daughter, Roberta (Gregg) Holt of Kingwood, Texas and her son, Jon Michael (Julie) Waschak; sons Thomas (Connie) of Durham, N.C., Richard (Susan) of Austintown and their sons, Richard and Michael (Stephanie) and James (his girlfriend, Laurie Feinswog) of Houston; a sister, Florence Svatosky of Youngstown, OH; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Madeline and Nathan.
Besides his parents, Mr. Vagas was preceded in death by brother Andrew; and a sister, Helen Tkach.
The family has requested that contributions be made to Crossroads Hospice of Northeast Ohio, 3743 Boettler Oak Drive, Suite E, Uniontown, OH 44685.
