Hello.I am Rachel Vaca. I am now 16 years old and I am the daughter of David Lee Vaca(who passed away in December of 2004) and the grandaughter of Fred Ramon Vaca. I don't know if this helps but i'm really interested in knowing the family history.

Thank you

Michelle, If you're the daughter of Edward Vaca, you'd be a 4th great-grandchild of Juan Manuel Baca (Vaca) [c1790-1856] who came to California from La Cienega, New Mexico in 1841 in the so-called Rowland-Workman Party. He and partner Juan Felipe (Armijo) Pena were granted Rancho Los Putos and Baca sold off a townsite there named after him: Vacaville, California.
Please let me know if you're still interested in your Baca/Vaca family history.

Rachel, You, like Michele, would also be a 4th great-granddaughter of Juan Manuel Baca (Vaca) of Vacaville fame who came to California from New Mexico in 1841. I have traced the family ancestry back fourteen generations before you to Juan de Vaca from Mexico City who may have been with Vasquez de Coronado on his famous expedition in the Southwest (1540-1542). Please contact me if you would like more information. I'd like to get updated on your branch of the Vaca family too.

Yes, Edward Vaca is my father. Thank you for the interesting facts about my family. I would be interested in any information you have. One thing I'm really curious about, my father doesn't know the names of his paternal grandparents. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I hadn't checked back with this site for ages.

Thanks again,
Michelle Vaca

Hi, Michelle.
Your father's paternal grandparents were Tomas Guadalupe Vaca (1878-1961) & Guadalupe Florence Salgado (1888-1970) who lived in San Luis Obispo county, California and had 11 children.
If you're interested in more detailed information, I can email you at the yahoo address that was connected with your original message. Just let me know.

I was wondering, how are you related to me? Also have another question. My sister married Michael Vincent Baca, son of Fred Baca. Do you know how many generations back they are related? They didn't know at the time when they married that the Vaca name and the Baca name were related. So, I'm just really curious about that connection. Michael thinks it is probably back at least 5 or more generations. Also, is it your understanding that my relatives came straight from Spain to what is now the U.S.?

I know I have a lot of questions above but if you have time I would love to know anything you know about them. Thank you!!!

Well, we're 1st cousins, 8 times removed via Epifanio Marques & Maria Estefana Martin de Marques, Baca, Grijalva y Gorduna, whom we share as direct ancestors. We're also half-relations equally removed as above via Juan Manuel Baca/Vaca (of Vacaville fame). He is one of your 3rd-great grandfathers and a step-3rd-great grandfather for me (as well as for you). You see, Estefana Martin, mentioned above, married J.Manuel Baca/Vaca after Epifanio Marques died. So it's complicated. We're probably related in other ways as well because nearly everyone with an ancestor from New Mexico in the 19th century or earlier seems related to nearly everyone else there.

As for how else your sister may be related to her husband, Michael Vincent Baca; I'd need to know a lot more (e.g. his parents and grandparents) before I could even hazard a guess as to how far back they're related. Five generations back is certainly possible; but it could be as many as eleven or twelve. "Baca" is just about the most common surname among Hispanos (the hispanic people of New Mexico and southern Colorado) after "Martin"/"Martinez".

However, your New Mexican ancestors most certainly did NOT come directly from Spain! Your earliest Baca ancestor, Cristobal Baca (who is also the earliest Baca ancestor for all New Mexico Bacas), arrived in New Mexico from Mexico City about 1600. He and/or his children were likely present at the founding of Santa Fe, which is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year!

I have some questions for you, too. But they are about much more recent descendants; so I'll try emailing them to you directly.

I have read with interest your threads in regards to Cristobal Vaca. Our ancestor Cristobal Vaca, (whose father was Juan de Vaca, married Juana de Carmora (Zamora); and gf was Luis Vaca, ggf Pedro Vaca). Luis Vaca was born around the 1520 in Toledo, Spain. Cristobal married Ana Ortiz, in approx circa 1560, Mexico City. They had a daughter whom they named after her grandmother Juana de Zamora. Cristobal Vaca is my grandfather, 8 times removed as well. Most of our relatives were either born in Santa Fe, or La Cuesta, San Miguel (del Vado) New Mexico. We also have our pedigree chart going back to the 1500s. Four of us, cousins, have been working on this for years; one in washington, DC; Oregon, Colorado, and New Mexico.

So we may be related; would be nice to hear from you at my email: aortega87701@hotmail.com Thanks, Aggie
