Uzarskis from Sierpc, Poland

My research has confirmed my line of Uzarskis came from Sierpc, Poland about 1906-1908. According to a Polish speaker I know, Sierpc is pronounced "Shairps" in phonetic English.

I had a Polish genealogist do some researching and the family goes back to 1800 there with some small spreading out to some local villages not far away. It was located in the Russian controlled zone from 1700's to early 1900's. Immigration records will frequently say "Russia" or "Russian Poland" as the point of origin.

Farther west was the German/Prussian controlled zone and further south was the Austrian controlled areas of Poland. A different branch of Uzarskis in Michigan came from the German sector.

The two brothers from my line(Stan and Zygfred) came to USA via Ellis Island to Staten Island. Then to Michigan via New Jersey.

Hi, I wonder how you went about your search. My paternal grandmother came from Sierpc to Milwaukee,WI. She was only 14 or 16 when on her own she left the town because after her mother's death, her father married the 16-yr-old servant. Her brothers were twin babies. More we never learned. Her name was Lotte Tyborski. My father, her 3rd child, was born in 1903.
Is there a web site for a church or city hall with records of births in Sierpc?

Kathleen:

Glad to see your interest in Sierpc. I hired a professional genealogist to do the research for me since most of the records in Poland were written in Cyrillic alphabet since it was under the control of Russia for about 200 years from 1794 to 1918. I found him on www.apgen.org and his personal link is http://www.progenealogists.com/tpilat.htm. The Mormon (LDS) church has most of the local church records (Catholic) in Salt Lake City, UT, but again, you need to be able to read Cyrillic to use them. Taduesz lives in Poland, but travels to SLC frequently.

Your grandmother was a brave girl to launch out on her own like that. I am not sure the current American generations could handle that level of stress and the unknown.

Let me know if I can help further.

-Ben

Surnames: Brudzinski
Hello! I was pleasantly surprised to find someone else interested in Sierpc. My wife and I have recently got back into genealogy after being away from it for the past 13 years, and we are amazed at how much easier it is now with the internet. Before the internet, I had spent years trying to find the ship that my grandfather was on and when he immigrated to the U.S. After recently signing up with Ancestry.com, my wife found his record in under 5 minutes! His name was Jan Brudzinski, and he came to Ellis Island from Sierpc on the S.S. Columbia on 31 May 1902. He then went to Toledo, Ohio, where he started his family, and then settled in Fremont, Ohio. After this initial find, we have found much more info on the Brudzinski family. Thanks for your post. Hope to see some more.
