Need information on Flora S. [O'Donald] Utterback born 1876 died June 29,1914 or July 4, 1914, buried at Simpson Chapel, Greene Co.,IN.. Her father was Ewel O'Donald , mother was Ethalinda Foster. She married Charles M. [or N.] Utterback, born 1871, died Feb. 11, 1940.
Their children were:
Ethel 7/7/1897

Francis Marion 12/31/1901 to 1/19/1922
Nellie 1905
William Earl 11/21/1907 to 4/3/1982

If you are related in any way and have any information please let me know by return mail.
Thanks you, Judy

Here is what I have:

Henry UTTERBACK (1770-1842)
married 22 Aug 1805 in Fauquier County, VA to:
Margaret Ann BARNETT (1775-1864)
Although the birth and death data varies a wee bit depending on what source you find it in, all agree that they are both buried in the Feed Springs Cemetery; Franklin Township, Harrison County, OH. They had seven children, one of whom was:

William D UTTERBACK (1821-1880)
married 20 Sep 1843 in Harrison County, OH to:
Olive SMITH (1823-1877)
They had 15 children, one of whom was:

Francis Marion UTTERBACK
Abt. 1844 Cadiz, Harrison County, OH, USA
19 Jan 1922 Place Unknown
married 26 Dec 1869 (Place Unknown) to:
Mariah RICHARDSON
Abt. 1846 Cadiz, Harrison County, OH, USA
Death Information Unknown

I believe that Francis was better known by his middle name. At least I believe that is what he used in the 1880 Census:

1880 United States Census
Household Record
Marion UTTERBACK Self M Male W 35 Farmer
Mariah UTTERBACK Wife M Female W 30 Keeping House
Charles UTTERBACK Son S Male W 9
Eleazer UTTERBACK Son S Male W 7
Samuel UTTERBACK Son S Male W 4
Roalie UTTERBACK Dau S Female W 8M
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Source Information:
Census Place: Taylor, Greene County, IN
Family History Library Film: 1254281
NA Film Number: T9-0281
Page Number: 195A

All parents were born in Ohio and all the children were born in Indiana. I'm fairly certain that the Charles listed above is the Charles you inquired about. I have much more information about the ancestors if you are interested. Please let me know. However, I have very little data of the descendants of Marion and Mariah. If you have any further information, I would be happy to hear about it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Rob

This is all I have so far, is this the same family?
Would love anything you have on Charles and Flora.
Flora was my great grandmother's half sister.
Also, a widow to one of the children was still alive as of last year, she is blind but good memory; a granddaughter also has information but has not passed it on to me.

I believe that this is the same family. Other information that I have for Flora is:

Daughter of:

Ewel O'DONALD
Abt. 1834 Cincinnati, Boone County, OH
22 Apr 1913 Linton, Greene County, IN
married Abt. 1874 in Coshocton County, OH to:
Ethalinda FOSTER
Abt. 1834 Ohio
Abt. 1893 Place Unknown

The 1880 Census lists Ewel as Uel:

Household Record
Name Rel. Marital Gender Race Age Occp.
Uel ODONALD Self M Male W 46 Laborer
Ethelinda ODONALD Wife M Female W 46 Kp Hse
Flora ODONALD Dau S Female W 4
Arena ODONALD Dau S Female W 16
James ODONALD Son S Male W 6

Source Information:
Census Place: Taylor, Greene County, IN, USA
Family History Library Film: 1254281
NA Film Number: T9-0281
Page Number: 195D

As you can see, the census takers were not all that great about spelling. Ewel was a widow when he married Ethelinda. His previous marriage was to Elisabeth Ann SHARPLESS. I have also seen Ethalinda as Ethalinda FOSTER HAYS. One little bit I picked up about Ewel:

Terre Haute Tribune Wednesday, April 23, 1913 page 3
Drops Dead in Street, Linton, Ind. April 23
Ewell O'DONALD, 79 years old, fell dead in this city yesterday while talking to a friend on the street. He was a well read man and took a keen interest in politics in his younger days. He made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Charles W. Utterback, who resides in the northwest part of this city. He has one son, whose home is in Kansas City. The body will be shipped Bloomfield and burial will be Wednesday afternoon from Simpson chapel.

Notice that this article spells Ewel's name with an extra "l" at the end and has Charles' middle initial as "W" instead of "M." I think newspaper articles are about as accurate as the census. It is a possibility but I take it with a grain of salt until I can confirm it with documentation (birth or death certificate, draft registration, etc).

As for the children of Flora and Charles: do you happen to know if Ethel or Nellie got married? If so, to whom?

I believe that William Earl is listed in the SSDI:
WILLIAM UTTERBACK
21-Nov-1907
Apr-82
47441 (Linton, Greene, IN)
(none specified)
304-01-5599
Indiana

I don't know if he married or, if so, to whom. I have even less information on his younger brother, James Edgar.

As for ancestors: those are well documented. Charles Milton was the son of Francis Marion who was the son of William D who was the son of Henry who was the son of Johann Henrich OTTERBACH, the younger who immigrated from Prussia with his uncle of the same name.

Hope some of this helps.

Rob

Hello. . . this is interesting to me. John Landis is my relative - Ethel Utterback worked for him as a servant according to 1920 census. Does anyone have any more info on John or his family?
