starting a message board

Greetings... I'm trying to build on the work of my father on our family history. There aren't too many Uras in the US. Most appear to be related, although the particular family I'm looking for help with originated in Poland. There are also Uras of Japanese ancestry, but they are not related to me in any way. If you are a Ura, or have Ura surnames in your background, please respond with a post or an email. Thanks, Ed

My family surname is Ura, no idea where it comes from or what it means, as family trees have been lost due to feuding relatives. Any info you have would be helpful.

Thanks,
Cat

Hi Cat!

Let's see... to start off, as far as I know, most everyone with the surname "Ura" is related (and relatively closely)... unless they have some Japanese ancestry. Ura means "beach" in Japanese, and while it isn't a common name, it is more common there than it is here!

I have found the Ura name in St. Louis on a couple of web searches, but never found anyone to actually talk to. (I saw that you had an aol screename and looked you up just to see if it said where you were from -- ). My family (and, of course, all the other Uras that I know) come from Poland (or Germany, depending on which war Poland had lost at that time!). All the ones that I am in contact with (actually mostly my dad was in contact with... he was much more in to this than I had been, but I have inherited the job, lol) came to the US either through Montreal or New York City. I know that there was at least one Ura who came through New Orleans, but I'm not sure how we're related. No one really knows what the name means (it doesn't have any direct translation in either Polish or German) but there are some old letters and things that suggest it was a battle cry (like "charge") used by both the Germans and Poles. Who knows?? That is probably a mystery we'll never solve

If you're interested, I'd really enjoy exchanging information to see if we can find a link somewhere.... my dad had run into a bit of a dead end and I've just been looking at bits and pieces that he had acquired but not catalogued before he died. I know you said you didn't have much information, but I'm pretty good at digging things up if I have a clue or two.

If you want to keep talking on the message board, feel free... or you can write me directly at either of my aol screennames: DaBoss90 or EdmundBUra.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Ed

My name is Karen weitman.

My dad was Robert Ura- Adele Haller was his mother. He was born in 1918 died in 1995. After my father I know my grandfather's name was Lee Ura...But is stops there. He was someone my uncles etc refused to talk about . I too have search, but found that most were from the Phillipines. There were 2 Ura's & then Vogts. Grandmother's papers say they were married, but I think it was common law. Where are you located. As far as I know my dad was Missouri born and raised and died, but I don't know where his father was.
There was Allan Ura, Pete Vogt, I know one of my uncles committed suicide, and right now the name slips my mind. I know, but I have no family, every one is dead and it's hard to get information. The more that comes to me I will e-mail you. I'm new to this so I am just learning
