My name is James G. Up de Graff, the grandson of Thaddeus S. Up de Graff, Jr. I have seen a record that indicates before the Op den Graef family migrated to Krefield, Germany, they changed their name from Isaacs. Do you have any information regarding if such an event took place? Thanks. James

I've read something that said they changed their name in Germany from Vangroben or something similar. I also have read that there's lots of confusion because the men often have "Isaak" as a middle name, and then are known by it, so son's and cousins in the same family would all be called Isaak in records, even though their names are Herman Isaak Op De Graff, or Abraham Isaak Op De Graff, as an example.
Of course the obvious change of "americanization" is clear with the different spellings. My grandmother, as a descendant of Abraham Isaaks Op De Graff (apparently) was named Rose Uptegrove.

Thank you for your clarification of the name, Isaak. That reason makes sense for the Op den Graefs being referred to as Isaaks. I have also heard that they actually had the name Isaak at one time and then changed it. Your account makes more sense to me. I heard that there was only one original Op den Graef that had descendants; so we are likely related. Descendants went in different directions. There is a James G. Up de Graff, who has the exact same name as myself, who lives in Sacramento and still retains the same Quaker religion as the ones that originally emigrated from Krefield Germany in about 1683. James
