Ralph Oliver Umbarger, the son of Harvey and Vinnie Baldwin Umbarger, was born January 1, 1918 at Ada. He departed this life March 29, 1998 at his home in Minneapolis at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 28 days.
He served as a ship's cook in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. On October 3, 1959 he was united in marriage to Lydia J. Hiserote Granzella at Denver, Colo. Ralph farmed in the Ada community until moving to Minneapolis in 1965. He was custodian at the Minneapolis Grade School until his retirement in 1983. His wife precede him in death January 27, 1983. He was a member of the Ada United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3201 at Minneapolis.
Survivors include two sons, LeRoy Granzella and his wife Helen of Westminister, Calif. and Robert Granzella and his wife Joyce of Salina; two daughters, Janet and husband Richard Stanley of Culver and Sue Umbarger of Nashville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today, Thursday, April 2, at 10:00 a.m. at Ada United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Langhofer officiating. Music is by Brett and Rosie Prochaska.
Honorary casket bearers are Coffee Shop Friends. Casket bearers are Gary Stanley, David Stanley, Russell Strifler, Mike Stanley, Scot Granzella and James Umbarger. Interment is in Ada Cemetery with a military graveside service by U.S. Army personnel.
The family suggests memorials to Love Inc., or the Hospice of Ottawa County.
