My ggrandmother's name was Sarah M. (Sallie) Umbarger. Her father, Stephen G., was born in Virginia, as was her mother. They later moved to Paris, Texas in Lamar County. The 1870 Lamar County census indicates that Stephen's wife's name was "Senah". I believe she was full blood Cherokee, but do not know her last name. Would appreciate any information on this family.

My grandfather's grandfather, was Stephen G Umbarger, born 1836, died 1903. Married to Senna A. Castle.

I've been online a lot lately...

Stephen's father was Simon (Umberger?), b. 1813 d. 1886
married Malinda Gose 1818-1894

Simon's father was Leonard b 1782 - 1844
married Christina Neff

Leonard's father was 'Big' Henry b. 1752 - 1837
married Ann Margaret Bauer

Big Henry's father was Michael 1718-1788
married Anna Maria Rambler

Michael's father was Heinrich b 1688-1787
married Juliana (more on familysearch.com)

Lately I'm tracing Heinrich emigrating from Germany via Holland on the Ship Hope of London (Daniel Reed, Master, from Rotterdam), his father Conrad, his father Rudi, from Switzerland. I don't have all that organized, but as of last night looks like it goes back to 1570's...

I'd love more info on Senna... and on Stephen G. I have two documents written by Stephen G. (one original and one from records where he was applying for Civil War Veteran benefits.)

Do you have any photos? I have several of John William, who must be Sarah's brother.

Dear Terri,

We have been tracing the Umbarger family off and on for over 30 years. When I got online I found the city of Umbarger, Texas. I have been trying to find out how it got its name. I have also been trying to buy a book called "Interlude at Umbarger" it is a book about a POW camp in Umbarger, Texas. Do you know how Umbarger got its name or how I could obtain a book about Umbarger Texas? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bonnie Umbarger

Hi,
I would like to track that book down also. My mom has a copy but I haven't been able to find one.

I've been intensely into this. I've found so much info recently, I need to get it organized so I can send it to you.

The town of Umbarger, Texas was named after my great-grandfather John William Umbarger. His father Simon Umbarger (1813-1886) came to Texas from Virginia. The family came from Pennsylvania and I've traced them to Switzerland via Germany (no details before 1600's yet but I'm working on it).

I have dates for the family, which match most of the info in LDS web site (some of their info is not correct!)

Write me and I'll try to give you address for the book for Umbarger Texas. I'm hoping to hear from my great-great-grandfather (Simon's) grand-daughter after posting her last night!

Hi Terri!
Your information is wonderful! I can't tell you how long I've been trying to find Sarah Umbarger's mother's correct name! I don't have any pictures of her or Stephen but I do have pictures of Sarah and her husband, Samuel Carroll. I, too, would like more information on Senna and I would be interested in having copies of the documents you have written by Stephen. I live in Amarillo, TX and about 20 miles from here in Randall county is "Umbarger, TX". I drove over there one day, but there's not much there except a post office and a few homes and churches. There is a cemetery, but I didn't go into it as I was told to be careful where I stepped as there were rattlesnakes in it, so I changed my mind about going into it! I do plan to go to the Randall County Courthouse, (in fact, I had been thinking earlier today that I would try to go this week)and see if there are any records on Stephen Umbarger. Do you have any information about where he died? I have just been assuming that he had something to do with this "Umbarger, TX", but don't know for sure. Also, I have a copy of the 1900 Randall County Census which indicates that Stephen G. was 65 at that time and his wife, S.A. was 41 he had a step daughter by the name of Virginia McBee, who was 13, living with them. Do you know anything about this? I don't believe this is the same wife as Senna even though the initials are S.A. Also, this record show that Stephen was born in May, 1835, (in Virginia) and his wife born in Feb. 1859 in Texas. The 1880 Census of Lamar County, TX indicates that Stephen's wife was Sena A., age 46 and born in Virginia. She was apparently a year or two older than Stephen. At that time they had Mary V., age 16, John W., age 14, Sarah M,. age 10, Elizabeth A., age 8, and Alice R., age 6, all living at home. Sarah married Samuel Carroll in Paris, Tx. on August 25, 1886. I don't know if any of this is information you don't have, but maybe some of it will help. I will appreciate receiving any additional information you have for find in the future, especially about Senna. And I will be glad to keep you informed of anything I might find. Thank you so very much. You have made my day with this information! If you would like to correspond with me, my e-mail address is rannie@arn.net. Look forward to hearing from you. Donna

Hello again, Terri!
I've just now read Bonnie's message and your reply. I was not aware of how Umbarger, Tx got its name, but it is very interesting that it was named after my g-grandmother's brother, John William. If he was your g-grandfather, what relation does that make us???? I would also like to know how to get the book about Umbarger, TX and also, who is Simon's grand-daughter that you have posted? I would also like to have copies of the photos you have of John William. I'll be glad to pay for them. Thanks.

Hi Bonnie!
I live in Amarillo, TX and Umbarger is about 20 miles from me. The book you are looking for is titled "Interlude In Umbarger" by Donald Mace Williams, but it is out of print. It is available in the Amarillo City Library and I am currently reading it. I was not aware of it until I saw your posting. There is also a small booklet, only 21 pages, titled "The Umbarger Texas Story" (which is also out of print but at the Library) by F. Stanley (he was a local resident in Nazareth, TX) and he tells how Umbarger go it's name. I will be glad to e-mail you the information if you want to contact me direct. My e-mail address is: rannie@arn.net
The only way you can buy "Interlude In Umbarger" is if you are lucky enough to find it in a used book store, but your local library may have it (probably depending on where you live.)

"Aunt Lena" was my grandfather's older sister. She was strong, intelligent, and was well-loved by her co-workers, neighbors and friends in Wichita Falls and elsewhere.

If anyone else knows her, please respond. I'm also interested in hearing from anyone who knows Lois, a good friend of her family.

Dear Donna,

Thank you for the information. I live in Georgia and tried to get the local
book store to order it. They kept putting me off telling me it would be in
soon. Knowing it is out of print, I won't bother them any more. I guess
I'll have to make a trip to Texas. I heard it was on tape, but you could
only buy it in Texas. I hope to visit Umbarger, Texas one day. My husband
is retired and I will retire in about five years. We want to travel around
the US and maybe go to Germany. But, I'm not sure I want to fly. I am
still trying to trace the family. I have been to Virginia several time and
learn something new each time. We are planning another trip next summer.
If there is anything I can look up for you please let me know.
