MUSCATINE, Iowa - Ruth Marie Umbanhowar, 84, of Muscatine, died Thursday, February 3, 2005, in Marion.

Funeral Service will be at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Paul Ostrem of the Zion Lutheran Church will officiate. Casket bearers will be Aaron Salek, Erik Salek, K.J. Schreurs, Brian Elshoff, Chris Salek, Tim Baars, and Jim Smith. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Zion Lutheran Church.

Ruth was born December 11, 1920, in New Boston, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Harry and Hattie Balmos Rhodes. She married Floyd Umbanhowar on July 23, 1948, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of the Muscatine High School.

She was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church, and a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She had worked as an aide at Lutheran Homes for nearly 30 years.

Survivors are two sons, Jeffrey Umbanhowar and wife, Kelly, of Letts, and David Umbanhowar of Muscatine; three daughters, Joanne K. McKirgan and husband, Dan, of Marion, Laurie Schreurs and husband, Keith, of Fruitland, and Rose Marie Doyle and husband, Butch, of Nichols; 12 grandchildren, Aaron Salek, Bethanne Mosier, Chris Salek and wife, Linda, Dianne Smith and husband, Jim, Erik Salek and wife, Chrissy, Gretchen Brown-Waech and husband, Paul, Tina Shaw and husband, Patrick, Shawn Baars and husband, Tim, Michelle Artus, K.J. Schreurs, Brian Elshoff and Amanda Elshoff; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Bishop of Palmyra, California.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Shirley Newman, two brothers, Charles Harry Rhodes II and Chester Harold Rhodes.
