Am trying to trace my Ukena ancestors. My grandmother Violet Emmaline Ukena was born in Melbourne Australia on 11.6.1886. Her father Frederick was born in Liverpool UK 1885/6 but he is not shown in the birth records in Liverpool. This may be because his father, also Frederick, was a ship's master and, according to what little family history I have, came from Denmark. I understand Ukena to be a Friesian name so I assume the family moved up to ?Jutland maybe some time in the past. Can anyone help?

Donna,

Thank you so much for responding to my very frustrating search for my Ukena forebears. I am not sure I received all of your message: It ended with George Redenius. Unfortunately I don't have enough information to be able to connect up to the Ukena branch you have sent me. Did I get all your message?
Regards,
Irene

Irene,

You got it all, I don't have much, only the two generations listed in the first paragraphs. Tetje and Peter Ukena, children of Eike and Antje Raveling Ukena. The listing of the Redenius' are Tetje's children with her husband Meinert Redenius. Sorry it was confusing...

I looked on yahoo people directory and there are only about 100 people with the last name Ukena in the entire US, so it does not appear to be a common name, so I keep hoping I will find a match with someone.

I think even fewer Ukenas came to Australia. I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, which is about 2 hours from Brisbane, Qld's capital and I believe that one of the Mormon (Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints) churches there will carry out a search for me as they apparently have a large data base. Just have to organise myself to get on with it.
Nice to make contact with you.

Ukena in LDS Centers

That is how I found Tetje's parents. Another "cousin" of mine ordered the microfilm of Walle to her local center and found the marriage records, birth records, and death records for my Tetje Ukena Redenius. There is a wealth of records there if one can find the time to do it. I have never had them look for something though. Good luck. Let me know if you find anymore on this board. I will also, if I find anymore Ukena's in my tree.

Ukena in East Friesland (Ostfriesland)

Hi Irene I have just started researching my husband's grandmother's Ukena family in Ostfriesland Germany. If you would like to send me whatever Ukena information you have there, regardless of how confusing it may seem to you, I may be able to help you. Did your grandmother have any siblings? Sometimes other siblings names can help you with your family research if the parents kept to traditional naming traditions. Hopefully I may be able to help you in finding out where your Ukena's might have come from. I also checked the Australian National Archives web site http://naa.gov.au/ and there are 5 hits for the name Ukena, 2 look like they are war records which you can order digital copies for free but they take 4-6 weeks to be posted, depending on how busy they are at the time, and you have to check yourself for them because they do not send you a message to let you know they have been posted. Regards Faye

Hi Faye,

Thank you so much for contacting me and your very generous offer. Where to begin?? My mother died 25 years ago and her mother, Violet Emmeline Ukena, died from Dropsy when she was only 48 and my mother only 21. (Volet's mother, Sarah Giles died when she was 44). My mother rarely spoke of her Ukena family and was closer to her father's SUNDERLAND family. In fact it was a Sunderland great aunt who told me my great grandparents were Danish and he had been a naval merchant captain - looking at records/dates she was obviously talking about my great, great grandparents.
My great grandfather Frederick Ukena's marriage certificate states that he was born in Liverpool, England and his father was Frederick and his mother Elizabeth. A note by an official on the record says that Fred didn't know his mother's maiden name. The original certificate suffered some damage and is difficult to read, but shows Fred's father's occupation as a sea master, which would uphold my aunt's story. I have checked the UK birth records site and Fred is not registered in Liverpool. If his father was a ship's captain and his mother travelling with him, as used to happen, perhaps the birth would have been registered with the Danish Embassy?????
Microfische records a friend in Melb. sent me show that Fred and Sarah had quite a tribe:

Ethel May 1883 Married Jas Step Macpherson 1912
Florence Maud 1884 Married Arth Ernt Bates 1910
Violet Emmeline 1886 Married Edwd Leslie Sunderland 1907
Fred 1888 Married Margt Ellen Taylor 1915
Charly William 1889
Ruby Ellen 1891 Married Chris Jno Wm Terrens 1912
Stanley George 1892

Fred and Margaret had a son Frederick Jno in 1917

It also shows Maude(Florence not mentioned) as marrying Ange Perlstein in 1919.

And in the middle of it all it shows a Frederick Bernhard born in Hanover and marrying a Sarah Dougherty in 1870 in Victoria.

My mother's first name was Ruby and I always thought it was because of her red hair, but was possibly after Ruby Ellen.

I can remember my father saying the Ukena uncles were great runners and had run (I think) in the Stawell Gift. I can also remember overhearing my mother talk of her aunty who had gone to America and was a costume designer in early Hollywood movies and had changed her name to Pearl. This seems to be borne out by the web site you sent me.

And that's it Faye! Perhaps your husband and I are related or maybe he belongs to the Frederick Berhnard side? I will be so grateful if you can find out anything further.

Regards,
Irene
