Hello all. I havent been on these boards for some time. But with the passing of my grandfater, I figured I'd start looking at the family roots again. Im at this time trying to find where my Family (Uher - my father side) came from in Europe. The earliest records I can find are the 1880 Census which my GGGrandfather Vincent (Vincene) Uher says he's from Bohemia (present day Czech Republic). Depending what year the info came from it was called Austria, Germany and others at time, but he was born in 1838 and it was Bohemia at time if my research is correct. Anyway, he left Bohemia with his wife Ann (possible maiden name Vilhaus or Vithaus)and small daughter Mary. They boarded the ship Mosel in Bremen and landed in New York on April 10 1875. they took home in Cleveland and lived there their whole lives. Vincent and Anna's older son, Joseph Uher didnt leave Bohemia until 1878 on board the ship Hanover and landed in Baltimore USA before going to Cleveland. If any one can help or any of this sounds familar to you, please hit me up. vuher.r@gmail.com I have lots more info on this Uher family also if anyone is interested or youre related :) Thanks

Vince Uher

Somewhere in the US documents you need to find a precise place of birth. No location, no going forward with the research. The "Baltimore" arrival manifest does not have a place of birth or last residence?

Unfortunately, Vienna, Austria was always Austria never historical region Bohemia. By any chance the daughter Maria was naturalized citizen?

It's all very confusing LOL. That document I found last night was the first I ever saw Vienna Austria named. Always before it was either Austria or Germany or (mostly) Bohemia. I'm looking into if I can find out if Mary was neuaturalized. Thanks.

Look around the neighhood that your ancestors lived. What sort of a church they attended? Our ancestors went to a place where someone from the family was already residing in. Common language and common tradition. If Bohemia is mentioned more than I would say that Bohemia is a place of birth. You might also check into Mary's [Marie] church marriage record. I would think there would be her place of birth.
