Hello! Hello? I am descended out of an Uhde line in America, and I am trying hard to figure out where in Germany they came from. I see this is an older thread, but hopefully someone will reply. I have clear information on the family up to the point where they boarded the ship in Europe. Prior to that, it's a big mystery. I do know that Wilhelm and Sophia Uhde came from Braunschweig. I know they had four sons. One son's name is lost to history (temporarily?). The other three are Edward, Engelbret, and Heinrich. (and Heinrich is formally known as Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Uhde). All sons born in Germany. I come down from Heinrich, or Henry, as he called himself. Have information to share. Edward came over first, on the "New York" in 1867. The unknown boy travelled separately, also. Wilhelm and Sophia and the other two boys came on the "Jenny" in 1869. Don't know birthdate for Wilhelm, but about 1821. Wilhelm was killed by being run over by a hay wagon only 5 years after arrival, and Sophia re-married, so we know that she was born 8 Sep 1824. They have loads of descendents that we know, and tons that we do not. Let me know if anyone can help, I am at wit's end! Lisa

This is one I can't help you with. My Wilhelm came to the US in 1865 with a brother Ludwig He was single and from the Heckenbeck area.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. We have no idea at this time about "who" Wilhelm and Sophia Uhde are... family connections and so on. I am really hoping to find out. I'm of the impression that Uhde is not really a common name, so that should help us. And knowing what Sophia's maiden name was would be helpful. We do know that they were from Braunschweig. At least that is a clue!! Thanks again for checking your family for a possible fit... Lisa

Hi! I was notified of your posting today in my e-mail.

I have lots of questions:
#1, do you know your "Christine" Uhde's whole name? If yes, what is it?
#2, do you know your "Frederick" Uhde's whole name?

These things really help, because those old Germans didn't always use their names the way we do in modern America. I have found in my line with the older folks that they usually had between TWO and FIVE names, excluding the surname. They almost always used the name immediately preceding the surname as their personal name. That's very different from how we do it today, where almost everyone uses their FIRST name as their personal name.

So, when hunting for records for your "old German", the records are often filed by their actual first name, which you might not recognize!

Now, the slightly bad news:
#1 - I am not aware at this time of a connection to any Uhdes in Ohio.
#2 - My Uhdes came from Braunschweig... not Prussia.

I am aware of a connection to some who went to Pennsylvania, there was a man named "Christian" Uhde was a brother to my Great Great Great Grandfather Wilhelm Uhde.

I can send you the information I have on Christian and Wilhelm's other brother and sister and the previous generation, it might help you out.

Let me know.
Lisa

Anyone related to the Uhde's (Charlie & Dandy) in Dayton, Montana Circa 1911?

I don't suppose you know who the Uhde parents are for your Charlie and Dandy? I know of an Uhde branch that is supposed to have moved west from Minnesota to the Eugene Oregon area. But, I am not aware of any close connections in Montana. Anyone Else?
