Actually, I just found out something from my mother. Apparently, the names Charlie & Dandy, were the horses names in this photograph I have of 12/25/1911. It just shows their names as Grandfather & Grandmother Uhde (in what appears to be in German spelling). I have a Mable Louise Uhde from Sac City, IA born 10/19/1896 who married Ellery Quincy Wiles from Asheville, NC born 9/25/1892. They married 8/9/1914. So I'm guessing the picture is Mables parents or grandparents. That's as far back as I have on the Uhde's.

Oh, that's just too funny! And to think I looked for about 30 minutes thru some of my stuff for hints.

But, the good news is I know of a bunch of Uhdes from Iowa who ARE NOT tied to me by blood anytime recently, so I just have to think who they are, and who to contact. Maybe your Uhdes could tie in with them...

Yeah, I had no idea. My apologies! I always assumed that was their names. But horses! LOL. I kind of feel like the horses butt right about now. I had no clue. Oh well, better to find out now, than never I guess. That would be cool if you know or have any contact info. I'm still piecing this side of the family together. If nothing else, I appreciate the help in what you've done. Thanks!

I still think the horse thing was hilarious. Don't feel dumb. After all, most families end up with a box full of pictures with NOTHING WRITTEN on them. That's what I have. All those great pictures, and they're worse than useless.

Ok. The Iowa Uhdes. When you read this on the Ancestry message board page, there is a box way at the top. Put "UHDE, IOWA" in that box. (the box doesn't appear on the "reply" page.) It will bring up a bunch of choices. You're looking for the family with the Bader connection. Try them. I know there were a bunch of kids in that group. They are actually listed in the Braunschweig immigrant book. Somehow my Uhdes slipped thru undocumented! Its frustrating. And, if your Uhde doesn't turn up there, try the other groups. Someone must know, there are tremendous paper trails going back to 1850 or so in this country, with census info every few years. Iowa was pretty settled around 1900, so you should have pretty good luck. (My Olson family was in Iowa at that time, and even with hundreds of Olsons, I can find mine.) Good luck!
Let me know how you do...

My late husband, Jerry Uhde, was the grandson of Fred Uhde. Fred was Mable's brother. Another brother just passed away in the last few years. Fred had five children. Only one of them is still alive, a daughter who lives near Flathead lake but there are numerous Uhdes descended from Otto and Caroline, Fred and Mable's parents, in this part of Montana. Among them is my son Mark.
They moved here from Iowa where their parents Wilhelm and Louise had settled. We visited the homestead. Before that they had lived in New Jersey after emigrating from Wolfenbuttel in the province of Braunschweig. My late husband and I visited Wolfenbuttel and met up with one Uhde who told us that all the male Uhde s including his father had been killed in the war. This man's name was Peter Uhde, he was an executive with Volkswagon and his father had been killed in the closing days of the war before Peter was actually born. The only other Uhdes alive were widows of those who were killed.

Hi Nuala. Hi Aaron. That picture is of my great grandparents, Otto and Caroline (Weber) Uhde. The photo was taken in Dayton (in front of a blacksmith shop, I believe) but they lived in Rollins at the time. They are Mabel's parents.

Otto and Caroline Uhde (my great grandparents) lived a few miles north of Dayton in 1911, in the town of Rollins. I suspect Charlie and Dandy were the names of their horses. There were no human Uhde's by those names in the area. Otto and Caroline (Weber) both came from Germany. Otto from Wolfenbutel, near Braunschweig.
