I am a UHAL

I am a UHAL

Hellok
My name is Jennifer Uhal. I am not exactly sure where my grandparents, parents are from. My father grew up in a small town in PA. I have been to the cemetary of family members who have passed away and found that our name has even been shortened in the last 75 years. Please keep talking about this. Maybe we could post messages on where our UHAL relatives lived in the states.

Hi Maryann,

My grandfather grew up in Leisring (sp.) and he raised his family (my father and aunt) in Uniontown, PA.

We too have been to a cemetary near Connelsville (where my grandmother grew up) and have also found several spellings of UHAL.

Please be in touch! This is so exciting. I've been trying for years to figure out if there were any Uhal's who stem from PA especially from the western part.

Feel free to write back.

Hi Jennifer: My father-in-law was from Leisenring. Parents are buried in St. Stephen Byzantine Catholic Cemetry. I was there 2 yrs. ago. Name was Uchal but now spelled Uhal. It was also spelled Ucall. I wonder if we were at the same cemetry! I live in Charleroi. Where are you located? Mary Ann

Hi Jennifer: Do you have any idea what nationality the name is? I thought Carpo-Rusyn but was told it could be slovak. My in-laws did not talk much of their heritage. They went to the Orthodox church. I did find quite by accident on the net an Augustine Uhal baptized in 1852 in armstrong co. Pa. I am going to try to find more on this.

Hi Mary Ann-
I think the name is Russian. Possibly German- but if I remember, my grandfather thought it was Russian. I know my grandmother was Austrian-Hugarian, and she spoke slovak quite a bit. Her maiden name was Skovira. And my cousins (her brother's son and his kids) still live in Uniontown. That's all I know. I've actually been trying for years as well to find out where the name is from and to find out the various spellings. I have even tried to check war records and such- but not much luck. It's also hard finding death records of persons pre social security, because there is no number to identify a person by. So I haven't been able to find any information on my grandparents- parents. Pretty interesting. I'm a researcher by trade- and searching this ancestry is a job in itself- and rather addicting!

Hi Jennifer: On my father in law's birth certificate it lists Austria-Hungary as his parent's birthplace. I had a geneaolgist in Slovakia do research for me on both my mother & father's sides of the family. I know my roots. But the Uhal side has been difficult. I did find an Augustine Uhal baptized in 1852 in Armstrong Co., Pa. Mary Ann

Hi Jennifer: While surfing the net i found a passenger list with a Daniel U-hal coming from Germany. One letter in the surname was missing. Interesting! What type of research do you do? Mary Ann

Surnames: Skovira; Horis
My paternal great grandfather was John Skovira. He was born in Egals, Hungary Nov. 15, 1851. He and his wife Helen (Surname unknown) immigrated to the US in 1881 via Ellis Island. They had one son, (Ed)ward (my grandfather). Ed was born in 1893 in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania and died Nov. 2, 1928 in Harlan, Kentucky.

John, Helen and Ed moved to Pole Bridge, Alabama according to the 1900 Alabama, Jefferson County, Census. At that time, they had a boarder living with them whose name was Joeseph Horis (age 26) in 1900 who was also an immigrant from Hungary.
If anyone has any information about this Skovira family, please contact me at tLord3@aol.com or you may phone me at 205-991-5666 in Birmingham, Alabama.
