I just found this! (June 8, 2010) These are my grandparents. They had 3 children. Mary Kay, John (my dad) and James. Each of them had children Mary Kay Borda had two daughters Nancy and Maryanne. John had 3 girls, Carolyn, Janice, and Mercedes. James had at least 5 or 6 children, many of them beginning with the letter "J". I remember Joanne, June, Janet? and Jim. The spelling for my grandmother's maiden name I thought was Pelcher, but I may be wrong. The name on her funeral card said her name was Leah. Her family were German and spoke it. I would like to know more about James W. Sr's parents. My grandfather James W. Sr. left the Ohio coal mines to work for the Penn. railroad. He became a Catholic before his marriage and came from a Prespeterian(sp?) family and had several brothers. One was named Roy. Let me know what you have found. We are probably related.

Don't worry about the names--you will see them spelled all different ways. Immigration records show Catherine immigrated to the states with her brother and sister-in-law, Matthias and Magdalena Poelcher. I am assuming her husband Peter had come over earlier and was waiting for them in Pa. Catherine and Peter had the following children according to the baptismal records:
Matthias, b. 1/19/1871. I believe he died within a few years. 2nd. son Mathiam (Matthew) b. 9/18/1874. Matthew was my grandfather. Catharinam (Catherine) b. 9/19/1876, Elisabetham b. 8/14/1878. Believe this Magdalena or Lena as she was called. Last daughter was Mary. My father and his brother were both put in St. Joseph's Orphanage after grandmother died and on the records there is a John or James Poelcher also listed as their uncle. I can't find any info on this son, unless it is the first born Matthias. No one in the family in Pittsburg has a clue either. Also listed is a Maggie Hurshberger. Don't know if she is Catherine and Peter's youngest daughter or grandmother's sister who was also named Mary. Another mystery. In 1930 Catherine was living with James and Lena Uffner and was listed as 86 years old. I have pictures of Catherine with Matthew, Lena, Kate and Mary.

Would love to trade info with you! Cathy

Glad to hear from you. My father John(son of Lea) took me to Pittsburgh and I(about 8 or 9)met Aunt Mary who was living with Lea and her husband James W. Uffner. She was extremely religious and her room was like a shrine. My dad also spoke of his aunt Kate. I don't think those two sisters ever married. They all lived in Pittsburgh on 321 North Murtland Ave. My father never spoke of having any uncles on his mother's side, so I can't help you. In the Pittsburgh directory of 1910 there are listings for Matthew and a Mathis Pelcher. Katerina and Peter were married in 1861 in Germany and they were married for 49 years. Did those boys end up in an orphanage due to some difficult times? Did they ever see their parents Peter and Katerina again? I've never heard of a Maggie. I do know about the Bordas for we visited with them. Lea was born in the US. Good luck and keep me posted.
