Researching my husband's mother's family who were Übel or Uebel in the U.S. They were originally from the Galicia (now Poland) area in what was then the Austrian/Hungarian Empire. Before that they were from Germany.

He married a Julia Haffenbratel, born 28Apr1836 in Bavaria, Germany and died 3Feb1891 in Ky. They had several children - my great grandmother, Anna Mary, born March,1858 and died 16Aug1911. In researching my family -- I came across your message -- perhaps somewhere along the way my family dropped the "l". My family originated from the german colonies in Russian along the Volga River (Odessa). My grandfather's name was Christain Uebe and my grandmother's name was Helen (Cooke) Uebe. Settled in Racine Wisc. in the early 1900's.

William Uebel started a dry-cleaners store which he left to his son Frederick Valentine Uebel (my grandfather). Fred married Violet Cecelia Propheter. Do you know if any members of Uebel (Uebe) family emigated to Russia with Catherine's German settlers.... We are not sure of the correct spelling of Uebe -- could have been changed at time of entrance to the US -- sometime around 1911-1912. Thank you -- Sandy
