My grandfather changed the family name from Block to Uden. There was Rudolph, Margaret, Herman, Henry and others. Any help finding history on my family would be wonderful. Or how to do it myself. Thank you

I have the same names but I thought the change was from Uden to Block. I have some info, but have been having some trouble because of the name change. My line is from the 1st marriage of Rudolph Block. I believe he was raised by the Udens. But I am not sure. Or the other way around. My info is under Blocks though.

Hi Renee,

I'm from Ostfriesland in Germany and I've been looking for Uden relatives in the US for some time now. I came across your message from 2001 and the christian names you mentioned seem familiar...
This is my information, would be great if we could connect our family trees here:
Name: Henry W. UDEN
Birth: 8 APR 1858 in Woodford County, IL
Death: 1940 in MN
Burial: 1940 Lutheran Cem, Lakefield, Jackson County, MN

Married: JUN 1877 in Woodford County, IL to:
Name: Almine Minnie HENRICHS (originally Hinrichs)
Birth: 1868
Death: 1926
Burial: 1926 Lutheran Cem, Jackson County, Lakefield, MN

I believe they lived some time in Flanagan, Illinios and had 11 children, here the obituary of their son Theodore:

"Worthington, Minnesota Globe
Wednesday Feb. 5, 1964

Theodore M. Uden
JACKSON- Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. from the First Methodist Church here for Theodore Martin Uden, 71- year-old Jackson man who died Monday morning in a car accident on Jackson street, apparently of a heart attack.

The Rev. Roy Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in Worthington Cemetery.

Mr. Uden was born Nov. 21, 1892 at Minonk, Ill., coming to Ewington Township with his parents as an infant and spending the remainder of his life in Jackson county.

He and Anne Knuth were married in Ewington Township. They farmed for a number of years before moving to Jackson, where he had been engaged in sales work. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Kenneth, Petersburg; Duane, Minneapolis, and Marlin, Fountain City, Wis.; three daughters, Mrs. Willis Ehlers, Sherburn; Mrs. Clare Hybbert, Dunnell; and Mrs. Earl Rogers, Worthington; 26 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The first member of a family of ten children to die he is also survived by six brothers, George, Wilbur and Rudy, Minneapolis; Herman, Mandan, N.D.; Ellsworth, Ocheyedan, Iowa, and Henry, Lakeside, Calif., and Three sisters, Mrs. Joes Johnson, Glendale, Calif., and Mrs. E.H. Will, Leeds, Iowa."

Does some of this sound familiar to you?

Regards,
Ina

I am sorry, But I haven't even been able to verify or figure out the puzzle of the block name change from Uden. So I would not know if your names are connected. I was told that a relative was possibly born out of marriage by a Uden. Raised By a Dreesman and changed his name to Block. But I haven't been able to verify or clarify this mystery.

Hi there.... this is a piece of information I received from a distant cousin in the US (also related to the Udens). Your grandfather's name has not yet occurred to me, but he might be able to verify the connection of our families. I'd be glad to receive more details about your family... but here my information:

"On the subject of the Udens, I haven't figured it all out but here are some more clues for you...Obit of Henry W. Uden Born in Woodford County Il. in April 3, 1858 and spent 48 yrs here. Parents were George Uden and Elizabeth nee Jensen. In 1892 he moved to ewington township, Jackson county Minnesota ands bought a farm on which the family lived until 1914. when he retired from the farm and bought a home in lakefield, where Mrs. Uden Passed away. in 1926. He resided in Wilmar for some yers and spent the last yrs with his son Rudolph in Minneapolis. Mr. Uden was married in 1893 to Fannie Benz who died two yrs later. One child was born to this union, Mrs. Emil Will. His second Marriage took place in Minonk June 14, 1896 to Minnie Hendrichs. This Union was blessed with eleven children, two of whom preceded their father. nine surviving are: George, Rudolph of Minneapolis, Theodore of Jackson, Ellsworth of Ocheyedan, Iowa ...Herman of Mandan N.D. ...Henry of Spokan Washington....Wilbert of Long Beach California Emil of Racine Wisconsin Minnie of San Francisco, California.

.... does this sound even more familiar to you? :o)

Ellsworth's mother Minnie was the sister of my greatgrandmother Helene Hinrichs.

Take care,
Ina

Hi there,

thanks for your message - well I guess we are family then! :o)

I'd like to get to know more about you and your family, are you in touch with your grandfather? I guess he could tell interesting stories about the past - maybe he has got some pictures... I have pictures of his Aunt and Uncle (his Mom's sister Rieke and her husband) and their kids/grandkids. It would be great to exchange some information and pictures, don't you think?
I guess I could send you some more details about myself and my family, but I'd like to do that via Email rather than his message board. You can reach me at did_i_scare_you@hotmail.com

Best regards to you
Ina
