Help with William Udall born at Sutton on the Hill
I have been a bit busy over the last week or two because I have had a few problems with the Udall side of my family tree and I would appreciate your advice. My grandfather appears in the 1881 census and 2001 census as William Udall, the name Udall is also on his marriage certificate. His father appears in the 1881 census as Udall and he is living in a village on the edge of Leicestershire called Whitherley. William my grandfather got married in this village in 1881. Both census state clearly that both Williams were born at Sutton on the Hill and William senior's wife Caroline was born in Cropton which I think should be Scropton which is near Sutton on the Hill. I have searched the parish records for Sutton on the Hill and not traced a single Udall birth, marriage or death. Similarly I have been unable to trace these Udalls in the Free BMD or GRO Index. However, earlier this year I discovered a Nudall family at Church Broughton (Next door to Sutton on the Hill) in the 1861 census:

Mount Pleasant, Church Broughton, DBY.

William NUDALL head marr 33 lab b. Sutton on the Hill DBY
Caroline NUDALL wife marr 36 b. Scroptown DBY
Mary NUDALL dau 3 b. Scroptown DBY
Ann NUDALL 1 b. Church Broughton DBY
William NUDALL 1 b. Church Broughton DBY

Could this be my great grandfather with my grandfather aged 1?

I have discovered a William and a Ann Newdall born in the March Quarter of 1860 registered at Burton on Trent which is the right district. I sent away for a copy of the certificate, which has William down born on 22 January 1860 (I have also discovered that he was a twin!). It also gives his place of birth as Sutton on the Hill with father William and mother Caroline (formally Tipper - so another line that I have worked on and traced the Tippers in a Derbyshire Village called Scropton back to 1700 through the parish records at Matlock).

In the 1851 Census of Sutton on the Hill I then found:

Maria Nudal head 67 Widow Pauper (Agricultural Labourers Widow) Born Staffordshire Ranton?
Francis Nudal Son 25 unmarried Agricultural Labourer born Sutton on the Hill

In the 1841 Census of Sutton on the Hill I found the following family:

John Nudall 60 Farmer not born in county
Maria Nudall 50 not born in county
Charles Nudall 25 not born in county
Sarah Nudall 20 born in county
William Nudall 12 born in county (Could this be my great grandfather?)
Wibberly Nudall 5 born in county

Francis Nudall in 1841 was aged 15 an Agricultural Labourer living elsewhere in Sutton on the Hill.

I have discovered extremely few other Newdalls or Nudalls - most of them in this area between 1842 and 1898 only 22 appear on the Free BMD pages.

I have been to Matlock to look at the Parish records and found most members of the family including the baptism of William's father (June 8 1828) and the burial of his father in (1848 age 75). I have found the name spelt Nudall, Nudal, Newdall, Newdell, John signed is name as Newdell at the weddings of two of his daughters. But no Udall. In the 1881 and 1901 Census there is very little trace of the above names not one Newdell and by 1901 there is only one Nudall left in the whole of England. (In the 1881 census there were just 4 all in one area of Staffordshire around a place called Alrewas - I have a hunch that the Nudalls moved to Sutton on the Hill from just over the border in Staffordshire - so more research to do there). There are about 20 Newdalls in total half linked to Sutton on the Hill and most of the others related to Russian immigrants in Yorkshire so no link there.

Do you think that I am on the right lines?

I have not yet managed to get a photograph of William Udall my grandfather. Do you know anyone who has one and might be prepared to let me have/make a copy?

I'm afraid I can't comment on your particular case, as it doesn't appear to be related to my family line (as far as I can tell). Nonetheless, I can confirm that names such as Udall can be found with a wide variety of spellings. Even in the last 30 odd years, I have a seen my own name spelt variously (somehow including "Vaowall"!), and in tracing my family tree back to the 1850s, I can see my direct ancesters in censuses and BMD records as Udle, Udel and possibly even Udial. Quite often in those days, with a census or BMD record, the actual person involved couldn't write, so someone else who could write (e.g. census enumerator or registrar) would have to guess at the spelling of a name; and for a name such as Udall, you can see how different enumeratos could easily guess different spellings. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if you have found the same people under different names at different time.

All the best with your continued search.

Steve

Just seen this post. I have been reseaching the Newdall family for the last two years. The William Newdall you refer to appears in my family tree. My line goes back to John Newdall who was the brother of William and the son of John. I have not been able to trace William since the 1861 census. Since seeing your post I have been looking at the Udall name in the 1881 census. There appears to be some similar facts although the 35 miles between locations bothers me. I now intend to research the two names in the 1871 census.

In the 1600s and 1700s there were alot of Newdalls in Staffordshire and Derbyshire. Tthe last Newdall I know of died in the year 2000.

The Nudalls in Alrewas are descendants of John Newdall.

If you have got any further let me know. I would also like to see how your research ties in with mine.
