I was reading a book on Lancashire names. and it said the origin of the name Tyrer, is Lancashire but origin is unkown. Possible the occupational name for an offical in change of the wardrobe of a great personage.

Hi.

I've heard 2 thories.
(1) from old french atiree (don't know if I spelt that right) meaning attire, hence dresser to nobility.
(2) from norwegian for ram

cant rerify either
take your pick!

All the best

Peter

Our version of Tyrer used to be Theurer, which is German. It appears to have mutated to Tyrer in our family in the late 1800s in Newark, Ohio, some years after immigration. It doesn't appear to be an official name change, just a change of spelling. I found newspaper articles where they start out using Theurer, then switch to Tyrer by the end of the story. We're looking into why, but the theory so far is the pronunciation of Tyrer and Theurer were similar -- perhaps T-yur-er. It has now become "Tie-er."

My brother's teacher was a local historian in Liverpool back in the 60's. He said they were a group of exiles from Normandy who ransacked their way through Northern England and settled in Lancashire, before the Norman Conquest. I've seen old books with the original spelling of TERRER which is Norman French in origin.
