I am trying to trace my grandmother's family history. From her birth certificate Kathleen Tyrer was born 26 May 1891 in Chislehurst, Kent - 4 Hadlow Terrace, Sidcup R.S.D. Her parents are Frank Tyrer and Elizabeth Ann Susanna Tyrer (formerly Hopper) and her father's profession is listed as corn merchant.
Kathleen had two older brothers, Percy and Claude. Her mother passed away when she was a young girl and her father remarried. Her father had more children from his second marriage. The one sibling my mother met, Charlie, remained in England and visited the USA via Windsor, Ontario. My mother met him at the Windsor/Detroit border.
From The Bromley Directory - 1876, Sidcup Directory, I found a listing for Harry Tyrer and Company, Coal Factors, Hay, Corn and Seed Merchants, Fly Proprietors and Job Masters.
Harry would be my great, great grandfather.
From the Ellis Island records I found Kathleen Tyrer arrived at Ellis Island 30 May 1919 onboard "The Saxonia", manifest line 0020. Her residence was listed as Maidstone, England and she was 27 years old and single.
She moved to Detroit, Michigan where her brothers Claude and Percy lived. She married Charlie Barnum and had two daughters - Frances and Jean. Mr. Barnum passed away and Kathleen married Leo P. Swehla and had three daughters - Eileen, Elizabeth (Betty) and Barbara. My grandmother passed away in 1978 in Michigan.
I appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you.
