My sons grandfather is a Tynes. We are interested in knowing more about the Tynes family tree from the weymouth, nova scotia area, and their native background. I have read some comments here and Lucas seems to be connected. I do know my sons fathers family are related to Cromwell's.
Thank you :)

I can't find any indication of native background. There is only one Tynes listed in Weymouth and he is African ethnicity. The other two names are also closely linked to the Nova Scotia African community.. The names Tynes, Lucas and Cromwell are all found in the Book of Negroes which was what the Mini-Series by the same name was based on. You can see the actual historical document and search for the names in it at

The Nova Scotia archives also have a free site where you can search for documents such as Birth records. You may need to download a free viewer program to see the actual document.

The 1901 and 1911 Census can be found at

If you search for Tynes you will notice pretty much everyone by that name in Nova Scotia lived in the Dartmouth in a predominatly black community. However when I search the 1901 Census in the Digby area there was one family of Tynes comsisting of Thomas age 64, Margaret age 55 and Mabel their daughter, age 10. I found them completely by accident as they are not listed on the transcribed index for Weymouth but I was looking up Cromwells and when I pulled up the actual page, this family was right at the top. The transcriber hadn't recognized the name and had just put first names with question marks in the index. But it is very clearly "Tynes" so this could be your family. I put the direct link to that page below. You will find a "split screen" option at the top of the page where you can see the actual page.
