I have been researching the Tyner line for many years. My grandfather is Walter Vernon Tyner, which I believe is the brother of your birth father. In the records that I've come across, it's noted that he was never married. Perhaps this wasn't so? I would be interested in hearing your story. I have been trying to find info on the native American heritage of my grandfather and his brothers. If you have any info please let me know.

Thanks,
Alecia Tyner Frazier

They were children of John W. Tyner (born 1858), who was the son of Ivory Steven Tiner (born 1823), who was the son of John S. Tiner (born 1789), the son of Dempsey Tyner. All these people and many others can be found by going to my homepage at http://littlecalamity.tripod.com/Leavell.html and using the PicoSearchEngine partway down the page, using the drop-down arrow to select "search EXACT phrase."

My grandfather was Walter Vernon Tyner. Which I believe was your fathers younger brother. Do you have any knowledge of our Tyners being Native American? I've been told that they were. Trying to find out where it exactly comes in.

You'll probably need a good DNA test to see if there's any AmerIndian blood in your past. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tynerdna/g... says DNA test results show that Dempsey is a descendant of Sarah Tyner/John Harris. There's no evidence whatsoever who his parents were, though. Since he's a descendant of Sarah and John, he is NOT Indian. Some of his descendants apply for Indian membership claiming he was a full-blooded Cherokee, some say their Tyner ancestors were NOT Indian and their membership comes through their mother. Bear in mind that many tribes didn't care about bloodlines; if you lived with the tribe, took part in tribal activities, and had family members who married in, you were a full member of the tribe. Very likely, when Dempsey rightly called himself a full Cherokee, his descendants remembered it as "full-blooded" and completely misunderstood.
