I am looking for off spring of William Tyndall and spouse Catherine Shore. Two brothers Robert and Joseph emigrated from Coon, County Kilkenny Ireland to Victoria, Australia around mid 1800s.Three sisters and one brother remained in Ireland for a time. The latter could have emigrated to the USA or canada.
Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Denise,

I previously had information that a great great grandmother of mine had the name Catherine Tindle. Recently I determined that the correct spelling was Tyndall.

I knew that Catherine married a Thomas Knowles In Ireland and later their daughter immigrated to the United States, where I live.

So I did a google search fo "Catherine Tyndall" "Thomas Knowles", which led me to here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~familycent...
where a Catherine Tyndall married a Thomas Knowles. There are typographical errors on that web page. That page stated that Thomas Knowles was "b 19 Apr 1864". I believe that b should have been an m, meaning married 19 Apr 1864. That would be a perfect match to the birthdate of their oldest child, my ancestor Margaret, born in February of 1865.

Information I located (somewhere) online had the marriage in the civil parish of Muckalee in County Kilkenny, while 10 months later Catherine's first child was born in the neighboring County Queens. So I guess Thomas and Catherine married where she was from and moved either where he was from, or where he could get a job.

Anyway, that seems to be my ancestors. Also on that webpage are Catherine's siblings, parents, and a few earlier generations of Tyndall's. I don't know if you have seen that webpage before. I also do not know where the information on that webpage came from. But from that chart, and other digging for Tyndall information I was doing yesterday, here are my "notes" for Catherine Tyndall.
...........
Notes for Catherine Tyndall Knowles:

Catherine's parents and some or all of her siblings, and maybe herself, were from County Kilkenny, Ireland, probably from the townland of Coan West.

Catherine Tyndall 's parents:

William Tyndall born 1817?
Catherine Shore

Catherine Tyndall and her siblings:

Eliza Tyndall
Robert Tyndall born 1836 in the townland of Coan or Coan West, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland
William Tyndall born 1837
Catherine
Bridget Tyndall
Joseph Tyndall born 1844
Margaret Tyndall born 1848
Phillip Tyndall born 1851

Robert and Joseph Tyndall were the only two Tyndall siblings who emigrated from Ireland to Australia. Robert arrived in Melbourne, Australia on board the "Shalimar" in February of 1855. Joseph arrived in Melbourne on the "City of Melbourne" in July of 1862.

Catherine's brother William was listed at the age of 74 in the 1911 Census of Ireland. He and his wife and children lived in the townland of Coan West in the civil parish of Dysart, in County Kilkenny, Ireland.
................
I already forgot where I got other information that at least one Tyndall sibling was from the townland of Coan West, which is in the civil parish of Dysart in Co. Kilkenny.

But now that I have a townland, I can determine which civil parish and Catholic parish that is in, and see if Family Search has microfilmed records from there, and they do. Film # 926200 includes records from the Catholic Church, the Parish of Muckalee, although a note says some of the records are faded and illegible.

In my genealogy charts, I mostly limited the chart and information to direct ancestors only, without mentioning siblings. So I don't care that much about siblings of my ancestors, except if it helps to confirm other information. But I will order the microfilm and look for birth records for Catherine Tyndall and her siblings, and I will try to find a marriage date and place for her parents. I am waiting for other microfilms to come in before I drive over to the Family History Center. Those films should arrive in a week. Then I will order the Muckalee film, which should arrive within two weeks after that. Then I will look through it and post any findings here. Maybe you have already seen that microfilm.

Hi Larry,

William & Catherine Tyndaal are my gr gr grandparents as well. My gr grandfather was Robert Tyndall. I have a bit of information on the family as I was in Coon Kilkenny back in 2001. I did a bit of research & spoke to Father Brennan at the church in Muckalee. He showed me a book with church records with somke of the siblings in it. At the moment I do not have that information in front of me as I am at work (checking my emails)...I will have a look for the info when I go home this evening & let you know what I find. Perhaps you could update me on children etc from the Catherine,Thomas Knowles family?

The name of the townland isn't Coon, it is Coan West.

Here is a website where you can search for any townland, civil parish, poor law union, or other divisions in Ireland:

http://seanruad.com/

You can see that there is no Coon.

Yes, I would like to see what you have about the Tyndall family.

I don't have any information on Thomas Knowles other than his name and that he was from Ireland. As of now, I am going with a marriage date for Thomas Knowles and Catherine Tyndall of April 19, 1864 in the civil parish of Muckalee, in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland.

Soon after they married, they moved to the neighboring County Queens (Now named County Laois). I know this because their oldest child was born in the townland of Luggacurren, in the Stradbally registration district, in County Queens, Ireland.

Children of Thomas Knowles and Catherine Tyndall Knowles:

Margaret born Feb. 25, 1865
Catherine, known as Kate b. Sept. 1866
Mary b. Feb 1869 She later became Sister Mary Elvira Knowles
Bridget b. Dec. 1870
Julia b. March 1873
Elizabeth, known as Lisa b. March 1875
John b. Feb 1877
Martin Thomas b. April 1878
Patrick b. unknown
Anne b. unknown
Michael Thomas b. unknown

Martin Thomas Knowles lived to the age of 97, dying in 1975.

I know the old townland spelling was Coan but it is now known as Coon. I have been there to the village. There is a hotel come shop, Catholic church & cemetery,a few homes/farms, a public school & a very old cemetery now owned privately by a man named Sheamus Hessy.

I ordered the microfilm #926200, which has baptismal and marriage records from the Catholic parish of Muckalee. It took 32 days to come in. Then I went to the FHC when it was supposed to be open one day and the person who was supposed to open it up was gone on vacation, I later learned. Then the FHC was closed the following Saturday. Finally, the next Saturday, today, it was open on a day I could get there and spend a few hours.

Then I had more than the usual problems with the microfilm. It was backwards and upside down. The the images were all negatives, that is, white handwriting on a black background. Plus the pages were in reverse order. Plus there was the usual faded and sloppy handwriting on some of the pages.

But anyway, I was only able to find baptismal entries for the youngest two of the children of William Tyndall and Catherine Shore, which records also confirmed those parent's names.

Margaret Tyndall was baptized March 2, 1848.

Philip Tyndall was baptized on what looked to be June 2, 1851. There was writing on top of other writing, etc., but that is the best I could figure out.

I could not find baptismal records for earlier children, including my ancestor Catherine Tyndall, even though the records were recorded beginning in June of 1840. Although she could have been born before then, her brother Joseph was supposedly born in 1844, and should have been listed in the baptismal records.

I also looked through the marriage records between about 1826 and 1838, but I could not find one for William Tyndall and Catherine Shore. Maybe it was buried in there somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

Surnames: Tyndall Shore Poole
Hi Folks, long time since I was talking to all of you. Recently I was reading this message and it hit a few bells in my research.
This Tyndall line was Catholic....most others were Protestant. Who knows, maybe he married a catholic girl and was shunned by the family....this Tyndall line was poor as I have a record of them being evicted from their home in Coan, Ireland.....and this action only happened to the catholics during this era.
I remember a Robert Tyndall/ Catholic in the Kilkenny records....he was born approx 1790 of Oaklands, Wexford, Ireland and lived in Kilkenny. Now look at the children of William Tyndall and Catherine Shore.
1st boy named Robert (after the father) 2nd son William (named after the grandfather) as history prevails, this has been the naming of children back then.
So, here is a new angle for ya'all to work on.
William Tyndall born 1760-1765 Wexford, Ireland> Robert Tyndall born approx 1790, Wexford, Ireland and lived in Kilkenny, Ireland (I think he was a lawyer)> William Tyndall m. Catherine Shore, lived in Coan, Ireland> 2nd son William married Anne Poole and had a son named Robert b. 1876 (see...named after the father)....good luck everyone! Keep me posted if you find a new loop to this mystery.
