Hi Candace,I have a copy of your great great grandmother Josephine (Tyler) Flanigan's death certificate. It says she was born 6/10/1862 whichi I question if it is correct and her death date is 2/17/1949 in Leighton, Colbert Co., AL. She is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Lawrence Co., AL. The person who filled out her family information was Edgar Flannagan(her son). Note the difference in the way they spelled their last names.
I descend from her brother Calvin Washington Tyler Jr & his second or third wife Mary Honner Thornton.

My Great Grandfather was Calvin Washington who is Josephine's brother. This is good information. I have been trying to prove the story about the trail of tears and would be very interested in trying to find that answer. Supposedly there is a family member that has a indian dress and some other indian artifacts from Elizabeth. I just have not been able to find them. Please let me know what you have found out. I will keep your name if I come up with something. Also, there is suppose to be some connection to Sequoyah or George Gist. Have you found anything there? Thanks, Kenny Tyler, Asheville, NC

My Great Grandfather was Josephine's brother, Calvin Washington Tyler. The best census that I have found showing the family was from Russelville, Franklin County, Alabama in 1870. It shows the parents Calvin and Elizabeth.
There is another tree that I saw that follows the Flannigan name. I will try to see if I can find that. Also, the Alabama Census are pretty good. You may have already looked at those. I'll relook on mine and see what I can find on the Flannigan, but from what I recall, I think they moved out of state after getting married.
Thanks,
Kenny Tyler
Asheville, NC
Ebenezer Tyler was may 3X great grandfather. I know it is a long time since you posted your inquiry in 2003. Hopefully you are still working on this branch. His first wife was Lucy Penney, married I believe in August 27, 1817 in Windsor, Kennebec Maine. I need to find the record. Was found in film at FHC... (12304). Lucy was the daughter of Geroge Penney. His second wife was Sarah Carter and third wife was Martha Childers. What information have you discovered since your last post?

Re: "Old" Tyler Cemetery

I have heard back from Montana regarding the Old Tyler Cemetery:
"There are only 5 Tylers buried in the Tyler Cemetery, Daniel B. Sr., his wife Thursa, Frederic Tyler, John Sellers Tyler & Daniel Budlong Tyler."

More importantly;
"I also called a lady about the Tyler Cemetery. Her ex-husband and daughter still live there. The cemetery
is fenced, but overgrown with lilac bushes and brush. She thought there was only wooden crosses marking
the graves. These, I'm sure, are gone by now."

So it would appear that the Cemetery is grown over and there are no headstones. However, I do have some dates in my own papers, but I am currently at work.

You are quite right when you say that there were a lot of Tylers in Central Montana. In the early 1910s most of them moved, though. My branch moved down to Garden Grove, California. Back then it was known as Westminster, California. Another branch moved to Washington State.

One thing important to remember is that there are many small counties in Montana. There was a time when there were only a few large counties, back when it was first settled. I believe that the county preceding Fergus County (which is where the Old Tyler Cemetery is now) was Meagher County. I have had great luck looking in to their records.

Frances Tyler b. 1868 Wisconsin

I am seeking help in locating information about one of my great grandmothers, Frances Tyler. Oral family history has it that Frances married my great grandfather, John DeGraff, in January 1885. While I do not know where they were married, the 1900 Federal Census has the family living in Chicago, Illinois and their oldest child is recorded as having been born in October 1885 in Illinois. The birth certificate of their youngest daughter, Edna May DeGraff, shows Frances as having been born in 1868 in Lone Rock, Wisconsin, a small town in Richland County in the southwestern portion of the State.

I have been unable to locate any documentation of Frances or her family prior to the 1900 Federal Census. Her father may have been born in either New York, Wisconsin or Pennsylvania, according the the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Federal Census reports for John and Frances' family. Those three documents are consistent in stating that her mother was born in Pennsylvania.

Shortly after John died in 1920, Frances went west with her daughter Edna and eventually married a relative (perhaps the father) of Edna's husband William Cooley. Frances is reported to have died in 1956 in Tacoma, Washington.

If these few facts of Frances' life appear to connect her to one of your Tyler lines, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.
Its a guess, but could this be her marrying later:

Annie E Tyler
Spouse: William J E Jordan
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1920
Registration district: Wandsworth
Registration county (inferred): Surrey
Volume Number: 1d
Page Number: 1225

If you are looking for a name for Jack Stanley TYLER's father, then you are unlikely to find it. If Annie didn't declare it on the birth registration, then the chances are she never told anyone. There will certainly be no 'official' record. The best you could hope for is that she told some friend or family member, and the information got handed down.

Have you tracked any family for Jack (or is that you?), as they might have been told.

You may already have this, but I would guess this is Annie's birth:
Births Sep 1899
Tyler Annie Elizabeth - Richmond, S. 2a/456

Wife of David C. Tyler

Many people have Susannah England as the only wife of David C. Tyler, my 4g grandfather, who died in Floyd County, Indiana in 1831. However, her will lists only some of the children, so I suspect that he might have had a previous wife.

Any information would be appreciated.

Marian

Tyler family of Floyd County, Indiana

I have found a deed which establishes that my 3g grandmother, Amelia Tyler Wolfe, is the daughter of David C. Tyler. So now I am trying to sort out all of his children.

The probate of David's wife, Susan (or Susannah) lists:
daughters, Patsy Tyler and Mildred Tyler; "sons [?] Reuben Tyler and Sarah Tyler, Nancy Tyler, David Tyler, and Jefferson and Catherine Tyler"; John Martin, son of Mary Tyler and Daniel Martin; and son James P. Tyler. I am assuming that Sarah is the Sallie Tyler who married George W. Wolf, rather than Reuben's wife, and that Catherine is Jefferson's wife.

The deeds for the sale of David C. Tyler's land that I have found so far have been signed by James P. Tyler and Mahala his wife, William L. Tyler and Catherine his wife, Frederick M. Wolf and Martha (Tyler) his wife, Reuben N. Tyler, and Samuel C. Wolfe and Amelia (Tyler) his wife.

The deed from Samuel C. and Amelia Wolfe says that they are selling an "undivided and equal eleventh part of the same which descended to them as the legal heirs and representatives of David Tyler, dec'd" However, they received 58 dollars and 33 1/3 cents, which works out much better as 1/12.

Any information anyone has to add on this family would be appreciated.

Marian
I another post in this thread, but the David M. Tyler who was born about 1825 was the son of David C. Tyler and Susan/Susannah--some people say England, but I haven't seen proof of that.

I believe that David's first wife was Lydia Ann Wolfe. She married a David M. Tyler in 1846 and died in 1848. Some people think she married the David M. Tyler who was your 4g grandfather's nephew, but I suspect the two Davids have become confused.

I am now working on learning more about David C. Tyler. Contact me at marian.hill@gmail.com and I can tell you what I have found so far.

Marian

Tyler.

So now I am working on that Tyler family and have found that there are two David M. Tylers. One is the son of David C. Tyler, and was born about 1824. The other is the son of William L. Tyler (David C. Tyler's son) and was born about 1831. Unfortunately, the facts of their lives have become mixed, so I would welcome any information that would help straighten them out.

Thank you.

Marian

I have now gotten more of the deeds, but not all. Each heir received 1/11 of the land, so there must have been 11 children. So far I can account for 10:

(1) Mary Tyler Martin - wife of Daniel. They sold their share to William Littleton Tyler on 12 Sep 1836.

(2) James P. Tyler & Mahala (Potter), (3) William Littleton Tyler & Catherine (Utz), (4) Martha Jane Tyler Wolf & Frederick M., (5) Reuben N. Tyler. They (2, 3, 4, & 5) sold their shares--including the 1/11 William had purchased from Mary Tyler Martin--to James Eddleman & wife on 12 Oct 1837.

(6) Amelia Tyler Wolfe - wife of Samuel C. They sold their share to John H. Utz on 28 July 1841. At the same time, the Eddlemans sold the land they had acquired in 1837 to John H. Utz. Figuring out how these proceeds were split is what enabled me to figure out that 5/11's had been sold to the Eddlemans.

(7) David M. Tyler - he sold his 1/11 interest to John H. Utz on 6 Sep 1845.

I only have the following from the deed index which only lists "& wife" but I am putting the wife's name from the marriage record. I've ordered the microfilm of the deeds. All the sales were to John H. Utz.

(8) Sally Tyler Wolf - wife of George W.- sold 4 Jan 1846.

(9) Nancy Tyler Hanger - wife of David - sold 6 Apr 1847.

(10) Julia Ann Tyler Keithley - wife of Thomas J. - sold 4 Jan 1851.

Hopefully I can figure out the name differences from Susannah's will and find the 11th child.
Jessie Tytler? Tyler? Tetler?

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm researching into my family and I've hit a brick wall with my great(x3) grandmother whose name is Jessie. There is some confusion over her maiden name because on her sons (my great-great grandfather) birth certificate, it is Tyler - but on another of her child's it is Tetler - and again on her marriage certificate, it is Tytler. I don't know which one is right though.

If this helps, on her marriage certificate her father is listed as ?as Tytler. The ? is one letter and I believe it is a J... so his first name could be Jas, but then I had trouble reading that letter so its possible his name was Tas or something like that. Does this name ring any bells with anyone? He was dead at the time of Jessie's marriage.

Let me tell you what I do know about Jessie. She married William Cheney at St Saviour Southwark, Surrey (London), England in 1892. They had 4 children - Jessie Louisa (b.1893 Camberwell, London), William John (b.1895 Camberwell), Ernest Edward (b.20 Oct 1897 Hammersmith, Middlesex, England - d.05 March 1958 Acton, Middlesex) and Lilian (b.1900 Chiswick, Middlesex - d.1902 Brentford, Middlesex).

Any information would be great.

Melissa;
I dont have any hard information as my search for my Tyler relatives hit a brick wall in New York State. I do know that one of my great grandfathers was born in Onondaga county, NY, around the 1860s. More importantly, his father (whose name I do not have...yet) supposedly lived in Buffalo and may have worked there in the earlier 1800's.
At one time there was even a Tylerville in NY, now named Rutland. This town was supposedly started by one Josiah Tyler (no DOB available, suspect Josiah is a middle name) and another person, but I have no way yet to link this person up to my family tree...maybe he will link up to yours?

There were an awful lot of Tylers up in Mt; we have one picture (sadly without names) that shows over 50.
Some of them moved to California to get jobs; some are buried here, including my grandfather, grandmother, his parents, and her parents. There is one big problem:
When they moved here, they moved to 'Westminster'. But what was 'Westminster' in LA county, California, is now Garden Grove in Orange County, California (went there many times as a child). Matter of fact, one person supposedly buried in 'Westminster' is now in Santa Ana, not because the grave was moved but because cities grew up and county lines were drawn.
From what I understand, the Tylers that did not move to California moved to Washington State. As for the contact in MT, he has not replied. I will be getting in contact with the appropriate county authorities in MT; when I get some info I will send it your way.

I have found out some information regarding the "Old Tyler Cemetery" in Fergus County, Montana. Unfortunately, not good information.

From what I can tell, the cemetery has either been plowed/dug up or is so overgrown that there is no access to headstones as had been represented to me.

However, on the positive side, I have found the state of origin of Daniel B Tylers parents: Rhode Island. There is a lot of info to plow through (8" of paper), so if I find anything worth noting I will let you know.

Hint: When the Tylers moved to Montana, Fergus was not yet a county. They moved to Meagher county. That is where I had to look for records. This includes land grants and a transcript of the 1880 census containing Daniel and his son along with the birth places of Daniels parents. Try the site http://www.usgwarchives.net/mt/ and look for the file name ed21pb399b.txt.

Tyler MT Info

This is a transcript of some of what I have:
Daniel Budlong Tyler is a difficult gentleman to track. From family history, we know that he was indeed in Montana, as that is where he is supposedly buried. We also know that his wifes name was Hephsibah, or Hephsy for short. Past this, we know little.

We first see records of Daniel B. in the 1860 Census, where he was living in Chautauqua, in Chautauqua county of New York state with Hephsy and their son, Samuel (4) and daughter Lydia (1). At that time, Daniel is listed as being a grocer. However, the 1870 census does not show him at all, but as this was during the Civil War, this is not too surprising. The 1880 census has Hephsibah living with Samuel in Paterson, Passaic county, NJ, with Daniel nowhere to be seen. There is a record of a Daniel V Tyler in MT, who is the correct age and was born in the same place, but the record is misspelled and may be a different person. However, in this record, we also have Daniel L. Tyler, who we know is one of Daniel B’s sons and is our relative. Daniel L. was born in 1861 in Mayville, Chautauqua county, NY according to family records.

According to family records, Daniel B. died in 1892 and is buried in Forest Grove, MT. His eldest son, Samuel, appears again in the 1930 census in San Diego, CA with his wife, Elizabeth. Here is part of the difficulty: they had a son, Daniel Budlong Tyler Jr., who died in his teens while the family was still in Montana. When one does a search of Fergus County (MT) records, this is the Daniel Budlong that appears in their results as being buried in MT.

From all this, we see that the Tyler family moved from NY after 1861, and that Hephsy was left with her son Samuel in NJ as Daniel B. and Daniel L. went on to Montana. Later, the rest of the family (with the possible exception of Lydia) moved on to MT where Daniel B. passed away.

First Generation

1.	Cora Mae CLARK[1] was born 11 Nov 1868[1] in Appleton City, St. Clair County, MO, USA. She died[1] 14 Apr 1953 in Garden Grove, Orange County, CA, USA.
Cora married[2] Daniel Lorenzo TYLER[3], son of Daniel Budlong TYLER and Hephzibah YOUNG, on 14 Dec 1892 in First United Presbyterian Church, Lewiston, Fergus County, MT, USA. Daniel was born[3] 17 Mar 1861 in Mayville, Chautauqua County, NY, USA. He died[3] 12 Apr 1938 in Garden Grove, Orange County, CA, USA.
They had the following children:
+	2	M	i.	George Clark TYLER	George Clark TYLER was born 25 Jul 1893 and died 24 Aug 1976.
+	3	M	ii.	Hugh Daniel TYLER	Hugh Daniel TYLER was born 14 Jun 1896 and died 3 Mar 1989.

From Family History Records:

I still have some research to do on the Tyler family. More information to come.

Our Tyler branch seems to have started with Josiah Tyler. This is speculation and has no documentation behind it. We do not know about his wife.

One of his sons Was Fred Tyler. This again is speculation and has no documentation behind it. Again, we do not know about Freds wife.
He had a daughter, Ann. Dates unknown.
She married one Samuel Young, a methodist Minister. B 1797, D Jan 26 1874 per Mayville Sentinel obit

We have copies of the transfer of property From Samuel and Anna to Hephsibah, may 14, 1855
Land owned by others: Daniel B. and Hephzibah Nov 1858

Estate of Samuel Young of Forestville, NY in Mar 18, 1874. He died in Patterson, NJ, with no will. This may or may not be 'our' Samuel Young.

Now, Daniel Budlong Tyler B ? D 1892 Forest Grove, MT
Wife: Daniels wife has been a complexity. The names Thurza and Hephzibah are named, but most often legal documents name Hephsibah as Daniel Budlong Tylers wife. It is possible that she died and he remarried but there is no record of that. Thurza died in 1885.
Children: Samuel Tyler, Sr. B June 27 1858 D ???
Samuel married Elizabeth Sellers B ??? D Apr 29,1935
Samuels Children: Frederick Tyler B 1877 D 1902 accidental death, John Sellers Tyler B 1879 D 1882 Daniel Budlong Tyler B 1889 D 1907
Samuel Young Tyler (Junior) B 1894 D 1953 Married Anna Moshner
Samuel jr.s Children: Lillian, Mildred, Elmer, May, Francis, Lawrence, Dorothy, Maxine, Marian, Jim.

Samuel Sr's children (continued):
Daniel Lorenzo Tyler B Mar 17 1861 Mayville, NY D. Apr 12 1938 Garden Grove, CA
Married Cora Mae Clark B Nov 11 1868 D Apr 14, 1953
Children:
David Thomas Tyler
...the rest are still alive.

The elder Daniel Budlong Tyler, Thurza, Frederick, John, young Daniel Budlong Tyler and young Sam are still buried at the old Tyler ranch in Forest Grove, MT.

History:
The first school started in 1893 in a log building. Another building was added in 1900. Cora Mae Clark came to teach, first in Spring Creek, then at the aformentioned log building. Most of the boys were taller than she was.

St. Pauls Church was dedicated in 1907.

Other important resources:
Mayville Sentinel No 2047 Feb 11, 1874
"We learned of the death of Rev. Samuel Young, formerly of this place, which occurred at the residence of D. B. Tyler, his son-in-law, ner Patterson N.J. a few days since. Father Young was about 80 years of age..."

Pubished in Forest Grove, MT:
It seems the earliest recollection of Forest Grove history begins with a man named McDonald, who may also be the namesake of the creek that runs through the town. McDonald was trapping in the area when he was attacked by a small group of renegade indians. He held them off for a time with his rifle until he was rescued by a group of soldiers who happend to be in the area.
This all took place in the 1870s. Later around 1882, the first settlers arrived on the scene.
...
The Tyler family came from Clancy, MT in 1881, from Patterson, NJ. As far as we can tell most of the family came, Father D.B. Tyler and his wife, and sons Daniel Lorenzo and Samuel.

Marriage Certificate Between Daniel Lorenzo Tyler and Cora M. Clark on Dec 14th 1892. This took place in Lewiston.
Federal Census 1860 NY Chautauqua, Chautauqua township P 5:
Daniel B. Tyler (46)	a grocer
Hepsibah	(42)	housekeeper
Samuel (4)
Lydia (1)

Federal Census 1880 Paterson, Passaic County Page 11 Supers Dist 1 Enumeration dist 153 pg 29
Tyler, Samuel
Elizabeth
Frederick
John
Hephsy (Hephzibah)

Further additions:
While the Tylers lived in Clancy, Episcopal Bishop Father Brewer would visit them. In 1894 the family moved to Forest Grove. The family had been members of St. Pauls Episcopal church in Patterson, NJ. Rev. Brewer would come to Forest Grove once a year and hold services in the old school house.

The Tylers settled on land and built a log cabin and a barn. They raised sheep. The little group of homes outside Forest Grove is called Grass Range.

1n 1907 the people got together and decided to construct a community church. A woman named Auntie Hayward laid the cornerstone with the help of John Sellers and Dan Tyler, whose families played vital parts in the building of the church.
...
About 5 years later the C.M. & St.P.R.R came through and the church had to be moved. The R.R. purchased 2 acres for the church and a cemetery where the church is now located.

Hi my name is Gwen Tyler Johnson. I am looking for william Tyler who was my grandfather. No one seems to know where he came from or where he went after my grandmother died in 1926. Her name is Lena Burdick. My father Clayton Tyler was her son and when she died all of her children were raised by others and my father is the only one that can't be traced. William was born Oct. 1875, and I think he was born in Kingston NY and died Nov 1044. I know nothing about his parents.
