From my research, Tygart comes from MacTaggart which is most definately Scottish. In virginnia in 1754 David Tygart and a man named Files took their families into a valley that still bears the Tygart name. this became the first settlement in that part of Virginnia. There was a Skirmish with the Indians, the Files were killed, Daved and his family escaped. The incident is known as the Tygart Valley Massacre. After the incident the Tygarts moved to SC and Georgia.

Tygart is from Maclintaggart, and there are many derivatives of the name used. They came from Northern Ireland but were Scotch-Irish. David Tygart of Tygart valley, W.V. fame went back over the Cumberland Gap to Maryland, but there are sites w/more information, names and historical data. Many Tygarts settled in Pennsylvania, particularly in the southwest corner, then over the Ohio river and into the midwest.

Re: Tygart: origin of name
Hey Daniel, my name is Anthony Tygart from NC and I have heard this story before from my grandfather. I believe it is true but I cant seem to find the whole story plus I thought the surname was spelled Mactygart. I know there are many spellings to the name but im pretty sure thats right and that the mac got tooken off when they left Scotland and got reduced to Tygart. If you got any information on where this family name came from, family crests anything I would aprreciate a respone at the earliest chance you get. Thank you
