Hi Catherine
I think we have a lot of information to share. My paternal grandfather was William Edward Smith b. 20/Sep/1890 West Hartlepool, County Durham, England and d. 26/Oct/1966 in Cleveland Ohio son of William Smith b 9 dec 1862 and Mary Ann Palmer Smith b 21 mar 1866 West Hartlepool and d. 9 jan 1952 Cleveland, Ohio. Mary Ann Palmer was the daughter of William Palmer and Mary Ann Fielding.
William Smith and Mary Ann Palmer Smith had the following children:
Lilly Ann Smith b. 13/Jun/1887 Cleveland, Ohio
D 1968 Columbus, Ohio
M James O. Brookens 5 apr 1816
She appears in England with the family in West Hartlepool in the 1891 census - do not have information on why her mother was in the USA at time of birth - visiting parents - could they have afforded passage? Domestic? Was husband William with her? Was husband in military or navy or a seaman?

Since the naming of children seems to follow the convention of using family given names and surnames of parents and grandparents and other relatives, can you clarify the link of some of the following:
(Eliza and Ann = William Smith’s mother Eliza Ann Horsley)
(Amelia = Mary Ann Palmer’s grandmother Amelia Matthews)
(Gummersall = William Smith’s aunts Hannah and Esther married Gummersalls)
(Fielding and Palmer are obviously surnames but are John, James, Tom/Thomas, Edward given names or Welsh surnames)
(Lilly, Kate, and Mabel are a puzzle)
(Isabel must be a Palmer or Fielding given name)
(I have found no link to Warnes)
Other information I am researching is about William Palmer and Mary Ann Fielding.
I found a Mary Ann Palmer birth record father William Palmer mother Mary Ann Fielding
Naturalization paper of William Palmer indicate he was from Merthyr Tydfil in Glamorgan, Wales
found a Mary Ann Fielding in BMD married to William Palmer in 05/Oct/1857 in Llanhilleth, Monmouth, Wales
William’s father was listed as William Palmer
Mary Ann’s Father was listed as James Fielding
I believe Mary Ann Fielding’s mother was an Amelia Matthews
can you confirm?
Do you know the story of the initial immigration? Did they emigrate from England because of recruitment efforts of Ohio Industries, economic difficulties, religion? Who came first? Any additional information on Margaret Palmer and David Wells? What is the link to the Iron/steel industry, coal mining, railways, etc in England? There seems to be movement and connections between Wales, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and West Hartlepool/ Stranton, Co. Durham. The link to Germany seems to have happened in Ohio. Did our group lived near a German neighborhood in Cleveland. On the religious front I find Church of England, Mormons, Methodist, and other non-conformists.
