TYAS It is not a common name and my g-g-grandmother was an Emma Tyas, of Sheffield, where her family ran the town's coaching inn, the Black Swan. It may be the name is local to that part of Yorkshire. Her father was James Tyas, she was born in 1836/7 in Sheffield and she had one brother, at least, Herbert, born 1842.

Re: Tyas, Haigh, Yorkshire, 1871
Chris, Thanks for your message. My g grandfather Walker Haigh married Ann Tyas at Birstall Parish Church in 1871. Her father was Thomas Tyas a miner of nearby Howden Clough. Ian

Yorkshire is good! Other Tyas researchers now have a James, a William and a John Tyas all married in Sheffield and all born around 1795-1815. We do not know yet if they are related yet. Also the mid-19th century Censuses list 40-50 Tyas's in and around Sheffield. Is this the greatest concentration?

Re: Tyas, Haigh, Yorkshire, 1871
I can't find Birstall on my map, but I have Tyas family members going back to 1741 in Emley, High Hoyland and Skelmanthorpe, all in west Yorkshire. Is there a possibility of a connection? If preferred, you can contact me directly at daviddriver@optushome.com.au

Re: Tyas, Haigh, Yorkshire, 1871
Hi David, Thanks for your message. Birstall is at the junction of the A62 and A652 about 1 mile SW of M62 junc 27. Birthplace of Joseph Priestley, radical priest (one-time Vicar of Mill Hill Chapel, City Square, Leeds) and discoverer of Oxygen. I haven't been researching long so don't go back very far yet. My Tyas line starts with my ggrandfather Walker Haigh marrying Ann Tyas in 1871 at Birstall Parish Church. Their marriage Cert has her father as Thomas Tyas a Miner. Censuses indicate they came from the Huddersfield area with Ann being born in Lockwood, Thomas in Almondbury and his wife Mary Ann in Lindley. Almondbury isn't too far from Skelmanthorpe so maybe with a bit more research we might find a link. Regards, IanSH

Ian, I think we're getting closer to a connection. A colleague, living in Huddersfield, is researching my Tyas line, which has been established back to the early 18th century in Sklemanthorpe. Her latest research suggests a link to the other Tyas lines in Dewsbury and Kirkburton. These lines probably have a connection to the Tyas lines in Almondbury. If possible, can you send me what you know of your Tyas line as an email attachment to < daviddriver@optushome.com.au> and I'll let you know as soon as a connection can be established.

Re: Tyas, Haigh, Yorkshire, 1871
Hi Chris
I was just having a wander through the Tyas surname board and noticed you had a message about Emma Tyas Who's father was James. Was she born on the 28th July 1838 at Westbar, Sheffield. Mother Hanna (formerley Jow)?
Regards Jayne
