Hello Twombly families! My name is Robert Twombly Jr. and my parents are Robert and Judy Twombly. My grandparents were Alice and Raymond Twombly. I believe that my grandfather was one of the last owners of the "Twombly" farm in Dover, New Hampshire. My father's two siblings are Dick Twombly and Barbara Twombly. My sister, Kimberly Twombly, and I were trying to "leaf" through our family tree and stumbled across this bulletin board. If anyone has any information relating to our branch of the family tree, please let us know. Likewise, I have a partial family album that contains an old family tree that I will list in my next posting. Hopefully, someone will be able to connect us to the larger family tree.

Also, we were wondering if anyone knows the country/region from where the Twombly family originated? It was always our understanding that is was either England, Wales, and/or Scotland.

We look forward to any information you all may have in your possession.

Adios -- RT

There are records pre-dating the Norman Invasion (1066), so the name is roughly a thousand years old. The Twombly's were from the village of Twomere (near two?), in Cheshire, England. The was near Liverpool, though I don't know whether it still exists. The name is Middle-English and translates to "between two hills", roughly.

You may want to check out the library in Sanford, Maine they have a lot of information on Twombley's. Dover NH is only 20 mins. from Sanford, Maine. I have followed this tree back to 1768 in just Sanford, Maine I now have to go over sea's to England to get the rest.

Thanks for the information! I am curious...is there a difference between the "Twombly" family and the "Twombley" family? I imagine that there probably is not a difference as far as the family tree is concerned.

Did you know that there is a Twombly by the name of Lance Twombly that was an Army Ranger in the novel "Black Hawk Down"? He is from New Hampshire.

Keep in touch and good luck on your search!

I am interested in the history of a Joseph Twombley who died about 1842 in Ohio. See my other postings. He married Trphyphena Hallet from Waterville, Kennebec, Maine.

I'd appreciate any help you could give me.
Thanks in advance.

Surnames: Twombly
You may have acquired information since posting your notice, but the following references may be useful to you.
1. Scales, John 1989. "History of Dover, NH." (facsimile of 1923 ed.). On p481 he Gives Ralph Twombly as the first in America of the line that I think leads to me. "Ralph Twombly, at first, was a resident at Dover Neck, where he had land laid out 10 April 1656, that had previously been granted to him by the town. He was first taxed in 1657, and then appears to have changed his residence from the Neck to 'Cockacho', as he had land there also." He gives the wife as Elizabeth and the names and most of the birth dates for nine children. there is info on later generations which I find a bit confusing. That the founder is Ralph is corroborated by some typewritten notes, "Twombly Family Notes", by James Twombly, 1977. I saw both of these references in the Concord, NH library.
I am looking for the parents and grandparents of my great- great grandfather, Benjamin H. Twombly. Does he appear in any of your records?
