I am looking for any information on a Francis Kenneth Twogood born about 1886. He lived in Clydebank, where around 1899 him and his brother got on a boat for Australia. Due to unknown reasons he and his brother got off in Cape Town South Africa and traveled on land till Durban. Francis got stuck in the siege of Ladysmith and ended up staying in South Africa. His brother went on to Australia. He apparently fought in the Boer War with the British. He married Margaret G Woodward, we think in South Africa. Their daughter Ruth Avril Twogood was my grandmother she died in 1983 and as such we have no information on her father.

Any additional information be greatly appreciated.

My name is Judith Giampietro replying to your info on the Twogood family of Scotland.

George Twogood was my Great Grandfather. He had a brother, Francis, who remained in Scotland when his father William took his brother George to Australia. I have records and letters From Ruth and some of the family history.

Francis Twogood was my grandfather =r married Gwendoline Margaret Woodward in South Africa - he worked at Simonstown for the British Navy they had two children, ruth avril and Francis ruth had four children (I am one of them) and Francis (always called Frank had 3 only his youngest is still alive - Ruth:s children are all still alive and well here in South Africa - all of us grandparents and one of us now a great grandparent.
It is quite true he did intend to go to
Australia with his twin brother - apparently the boat needed repairs ijn Capetown so he decided to travel overland to Durban where he planned to catch up with the boat - unfortunately he got caught in the siege of Ladysmith (the Boer war was on at the time) and missed the boat - which is why we are here and his brothers family are in Australia. My brother Michael has been to visit them and my Mom corresponded with them regularly.

Hi Pamela,
Thank you for your information regarding Francis and your South African family. How nice to hear there are grandparents and great grandparents from Francis's line.
I am surprised to learn Francis had a twin brother - was that Robert? Did Robert continue his voyage to Australia or did he arrive later on his own? I am not sure of their DOB, if you have it could you post it to me.
I do have a lot of history on the Australian Twogood family starting with William Twogood and son George who arrived Australia on March 30th 1859 on the ship "Southampton" Although I haven't done any research for a few years now, and I am very rusty at it.
William Twogood was my great great grandfather, his son George married Agnes Mary Williams and had 9 children and lived in Forbes NSW, my grandmother Mary Agnes Twogood married William Alfred Shaw who was my grandfather and they moved to Tasmania. My parents Wally and Gwen Shaw did correspond with Ruth in Rhodesia for some time and I still have those letters which has given me the outline of the South African Family.
From my research on the IGI I believe the Twogood family originated from Devon near a village called Buckerell.

I am still in contact with Russell & Elizabeth Twogood's (both decd.) children in Perth Aust.
We had a family history get together about 18 months ago when I visited them in Perth. They are also very keen on Family History.
If you would like anymore info regarding the "Twogood Family both here and some research in England, including Scotland, let me know and I will do my best to answer any questions.

Best regards
Judy Giampietro

HI there Judy

I am not 100% sure who I need to talk to. My father's name is Francis Kenneth Twogood and we are in Johannesburg in South Africa. I have been trying for years and years to catch up with other Twogoods. My father sadly passed in 26 December 1999. My parents only had girls so the Twogood name has discontinued from our side which is really sad.

I would like to know more about the family. I don't know much but I can speak to my mom and find out. My dad's parents had 4 children. My dad, an older brother and two sisters. All are deceased except for the youngest sister Desire Twogood. My father married Jeanette Susarah Potterill.

I am busy with a family tree for my kids and it would be great if I could get more information about him getting stuck in South Africa and all that.

Wow!!! More info would be great!!! I am working on a family tree for my girls and I do want as much info as possible. I live in Meyerton which is not too far from Alberton. Where are you? I would take it that Francis Kenneth Twogood (your grannies dad) was obviously my father Francis Kenneth Twogood's grand father. My grand father was also Francis Kenneth Twogood which means your granny and my grandfather were brother and sister? My grandfather was married to Thelma and fathered my dad, Patrick George, Rosemary and Desire (still alive) and after she passed he married Gwendoline.

I would love information on how the Twogood's got to South Africa and where they worked, lived etc.

Thank you so much for responding.

Hi Sherridan

Margaret Gwendoline was Haak and then Woodward or vice versa. Married Francis Kenneth Twogood. Then had Ruth (your granny) and Francis Kenneth Twogood (my grandfather). My dad then got the same name. I have all the details for you on your grannies brother! Coz that's where I fit in! So my grandfather was your grandmothers brother - not my dad.

See attached for Granny Haak (Woodward) death notice.

Let me know if you agree with the above. I can answer some questions you may have for your grannies brothers side of the family.

I also have photos etc that I can get together! My mom recalls Aunty Ruth who loved to write letters? Mean anything to you?

Best wishes
Janine
