Re: The family name of Twidle
Dear Mr Twidle, I wonder if you could help me to help a very good friend of ours find her adopted sister who was adopted by a Nellie Twidle at Taumarunui in 1944. She later married a Peter Dashwood in 1965 at Auckland. Her adopted name was Janice Melba Twidle. The last my friend knows of her was that she might have gone to Australia. My friend would love to make contact with her sister. If Janice would like to. The reason I`m doing this is my friend would, and does, help anyone , and is a very dear friend to my wife and my self. I hope you do not mind me getting in touch with you.

Re: The family name of Twidle
There has been considerable debate as to where the name and Spelling of the Name TWIDLE has come from.
My research has found an early record in Lincolnshire just north of the Wash England in the year 1700.
As the British churches recorded parish family records for centuries and spelling was phonetic at that time and England has a lot of dialects and priest were trained or came from other districts and some had hearing disability many name changes resulted in the actual written records.
Using Soundex I've seen 65 variations of the name TWIDLE any of which could have resulted as above
My families English migration family is James Cochran Twidle came from Cottingham just north of Kingston on Hull in 1859 to the South Island of New Zealand.

Re: The family name of Twidle
I have the name .. way back in my history. William Scott married a Mary Twidle in Brantingham E Yorkshire Jan 5 1808 (I think he had been from South Cave) they then moved over to Cottingham (just north of Hull). There is a large Scott family .. as William and Mary had at least 10 kids. A bunch of this family all came to Ontario Canada in 1854. And I believe Mary (nee Twidle) was on this boat ... she was down (in 1854) as Mary Scott (with Wm her husband having passed away a few years before) age: 57. This boat docked at New York Nov 12th .. but I am not sure what happened to Mary .. or when she died.
