I am trying to find out who Joshua Twiddy's parents were.
He was born abt 1840 in Washington County or Tyrrell Co and died 1921 in Washington County. Married 3 times, Martha Patsy Basnight, Rachel Susan Basnight, and Martha Ellen Ward.
Any information would be appreciated

I am also looking for this information. Joshua's son Benjamin Franklin Twiddy was my decendant. There has to be someone looking for him, he had like 14 children.

I just found out that my GGrandfather, George W Twiddy's father was Joshua Twiddy. Info @ Elizabeth City where GWT lived and died gave fragmented info on Joshua, and on GWT. The name Basnight came up and appears that Susan was GWT's mother as shown on the 1880 census from Washington Cty. However, it lists Susan Basnight as a servant in Joshua's home and she had 3 children all with her last name. Joshua at the same time of this census is living with Martha Twiddy. LTwiddy3372 said that Joshua was married 3 times to Martha Patsy and Rachel Susan Basnight and to Martha Ellen Ward. Could it be that Martha Patsy and Rachel Susan were sisters? And, he had children with both sisters at the same time? Does anyone have this information or any other info?

Martha & Rachel were sisters. They were the daughters of Henry & Keziah (Sawyer) Basnight. It is interesting that Rachel is listed as a servant with the last name of Basnight, while Patsy is listed as having married Joshua in 1859 & always referred to as a "Twiddy"

Yes, I have had several decendents contact me to say that what the girls in the Family Research Society in Elizabeth City mumbled about George Twiddy being a bastard son seems to be correct. Martha "Patsey" Basnight and Rachel Susan Basnight are sisters, living together with Joshua Twiddy. Patsey is his wife and her sister, Rachel Susan lives there with the two of them. Both women have children by Joshua, one of whom is my great grandfather, George W Twiddy, the bastard son of Rachel Susan Basnight and Joshua Twiddy. No wonder George W Twiddy did not list his mother's name on some documents of his, only listing his father's name. Now, how was THAT for beating around the bush about the two women living there???

I don't believe Joshua was married X3. I have found marriae certificates for Marth Patsy Basnight & Martha Ward, but have found nothing for Rachel Susan. His first wife died in 1883 and he married Martha Ward in 1885, doesn't leave time for Rachel. Believe Joshua & Martha Patsy had 7 children, he & Rachel had 3 and he & Martha Ward had 6. Busy man........
