My great-grandmother's birth name is Anelia Twardy. Her married name is Anelia Mendofik and her parents are Thomas Twardy and Teckla Bielen. She came over in 1907 with her son from Galicy, Poland(Austria) and met her husband in PA. I do know that one of their children was born in Neodesha, Kansas. I don't know much about the Twardy's. If anyone knows anything, e-mail me Please.

Catherine and Paul Twardy were husband and wife. They were from Dlugie (with the Polish crossed l) which is near Zarszyn in south eastern Poland. Catherine was born in 1884 and came to Stamford, CT. She and Paul had three children: Adelaide Catherine, Lawrence Paul, and Charles John. Catherine is my grandmother. I would be happy to share additional information if you need it. Note that you may get confused since Catherine's maiden and married names were both Twardy.

Very probably there is a conenction. Dlugie is a very tiny village where there was and probably is a lot of intermarriage among cousins. I visited there is 1965 and still corrrespond at holidays with family. Both the Bielen and Twardy names are in my lineage from Dlugie. If you have anything more I'd appreciate it and will happily give you what I have that may be of interest. Many of the Dlugie Bielens and Twardys emigrated to Stamford Connecticut where there is a colony of former Dlugie residents.

This is about all I know. The only additional information is when Thomas Twardy left Poland he left his wife and children there. He never returned to them. my Great Great Grandmother Teckla went back to her maiden name of Bielen and changed her children name to Bielen. I know my Great grandmother Anelia was married as Bielen and that she had a sister, name unknown and a brother Felix. not sure if there were any other sibblings. would appreciate any information you have or any help in contacting Poland for research.

I don't know how I missed your posting until today. There is almsot certainly a connection. Dlugie is a tiny village, nowhere in South East Poland, near Zarszyn. The Teardys and Bielens are everywhere and are still there even if in some cases under different names. Many of these folk emigrated to Stamford, Connecticut where both surnames are common.

My husband's grandmother was Albina Francescz (Blanche Frances) Twardy. She was born in Galicia Poland in 1888. She came to the US with her parents in about 1895 and settled in Stamford, CT. My husband's cousin (Dan Burke) has photos of many Twardy's as well as Bielen's and Rycs/Rysz's.

I started a new Twardy Group on Facebook and Dan has been posting some of these photos and documents there. Please join! We are trying to connect all of the Twardy's together but have hit a wall because we don't have any Polish records yet.

I am also starting a Twardy surname project at Family Tree DNA. I would like to encourage you to take the "Family Finder" DNA test for $99 at www.FamilyTreeDNA.com. This will tell us if we are related and also tell how far back the common ancestor is so that we have a way to start connecting family members. It would be really nice if the oldest family members could take the test because we know their descendants (just not their ancestors).

I look forward to hearing from you!!
