Robert Crawford Twaddle

Surnames: Twaddle, Ross
I have a Robert Crawford Twaddle in my tree, born 1868 in Lanarkshire. He married a Jeannie Ross in 1891.

However, family legends suggest Robert was illegitimate - later family member adopted the Ross tartan for this reason. Apparently Robert's mother was a Marion Twaddle, born around 1847. I think there is a family story that Robert was brought up by grandparents while Marion went/was sent somewhere else? Where 'Crawford' came from is a bit of a mystery, and it may be that a Crawford was Robert's father.

Robert's son had another Robert, who also had another Robert. The earlier Roberts had a farm in Lanarkshire, which I believe was called Lesmahagow. I wouldn't be too surprised if the original Robert's missing father was yet another Robert...

Really hoping someone has got one of my many Roberts in their tree. This was a family mystery, possibly some sort of skeleton which those older relatives in the know would rather remain forgotten. Unfortunately, I'm a bit obsessed and they have all passed away, so I've been stuck on this corner of my family history for years...
