Tracie - Here's the info I promised you a long time ago - I found it at ellisisland.org and looked up Ruben Tuvesson (Per's brother).
Hellig Olav is the ship Ruben took to Ellis Island departing from Copenhagen City – Copenhagen Denmark.
Sept 13 1917 Ruben B. Tuvesson arrived from Copenhagen. Passenger # 25 on ship manifest. He was 17 years old, single. His occupation is listed as laborer. Mother is Mrs. Elsa Johnsson – Box 20 Broby, Sweden.
His birthplace is listed as Ostra Broby, Sweden
His destination was Chicago and brother P.A. Tuveson (your grandfather Per, or Peter) who resided at 6008 Union Ave in Chicago. There is also a Gunnar Johnsson who resided at this address and is listed as the brother of passenger #26 Hana Persson. It looks as though Hana and Ruben are cousins, but this is difficult to make out on the manifest.
Per's last name is spelled Tuveson on the manifest. So, it looks like the original spelling was Tuvesson and was changed at some point in the U.S.
Info on Hanna Persson:
Female, age 25 – father is Mr. P. Johnsson.
Looks like Ruben & Per’s mother remarried a Johnsson
ALSO
Oct 15, 1920 arrived from Southampton on the SS Adriatic:
Elsa Tuvesson age 46 (our great-grandmother)
Nils Harry age 17
Jarl age 12
Alice age 11
The last 3 are the other siblings of Grandpa - Nils took the name Harry at some point in the U.S.
Destination Chicago – Elsa’s cousin Axel Ekstrom – 8856 Lowe Ave. Chicago
Last permanent residence for the latter 4 before coming to the U.S. - Hessholm, Sweden.
Elsa’s Mother: Pernilla Nilsson of Beroleyskog, Grunninge -wherever that is.
Interesting note on the manifest – Elsa Tuvesson was originally typed in as “Johnsson†and then “Tuvesson†was hand-written over Johnsson.
Take a look at the website - it's interesting.
Per (Peter) lived in Chicago - to my knowledge he never lived in Wisconsin or Minnesota. There are lots of Tuvesons especially in Minnesota, but no relation - it's a common name (you probably know that).
When he married Grandma (maiden name spelled Hoelstad) he was a chiropractor. Due to the Depression he had to find a way to support his family and took on the job of a house painter. He & Grandma, Aunt Ruth, my Mom & Aunt Lee would move from house to house for room and board while Grandpa painted the home. These homes were in Chicago and Winnetka.
He died when my mom was a junior (or so) at New Trier - so I guess that puts his death around 1941 or 1942 - I'm not positive on the date - I know your dad was very young when he died.
FYI - Mom's name was spelled Ellinor. She was never named Pearl - I'm not sure where you got that one. Aunt Lee's actual name is Laverne and most people who knew her as a child would probably be more familiar with that.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions - I may or may not know the answers.
Later Dude,
Katie
