Anyone have any info on my g-g-g-grandmother, Sarah Tuten. Her parents were Zachariah Tuten and Ally Dickson. Zachariah and Ally were married in Roane County, TN in 1806. Zachariah was born in 1766. Sarah's husband was Aaron LEWIS, b. 1798. Any info would be greatly appreciated and I'll share anything I have. Thanks!

According to the Marriages of Roane, TN 1801-1856, published by the Roane Co. Historical Society in 1973:

p. 69, Sarah Tuten m. Larkin Forrester on
28 Oct 1823.

p. 94, Sarah Tuten m. Aaron Lewis on 24 Jan
1828.

Don't know if they are two different Sarah's or the same one married twice, though usually they give the married name, they might have used the maiden name.

Anyway, hope this is helpful.

Someone posted a message stating that Sarah Tuten who married Larkin Forrester was your Sarah Tuten, but she wasn't. That Sarah Tuten was the daughter of WIley Tuten, Sr. (my GGG Grandfather) & Rachel (Cody) Tuten, a Cherokee Indian woman. I believe the two Sarahs may have been related though. I believe Wiley Tuten, Sr. was related to Zachariah Tuten, Sr., but I'm not sure if he was a son or not. My Wiley Tuten, Sr. was born in 1784 or '85. Zachariah Tuten, Sr. also had another "idiot" son named Wiley, who was born in 1812. Zachariah was also called Wiley Tuten at times & there was another Wiley Tuten present at both of WIley Tuten Sr.'s weddings in 1807 & 1813, although I don't believe that there was another Wiley Tuten alive at the time. I can't prove it, but I believe Zachariah Tuten had more sons than is actually known. He was married twice; had 8 children with one wife (unknown) & three with Ally Dickson Tuten, WIley, Sarah & Susan. Sarah & Susan were names that were interchanged and could have been the same person. He had 11 children & continued to have children with his first wife after he married Ally in 1806 (last child born in 1820).

Glenn, I have a letter from the late Gladys Marie Sharp written to me back in the late 1960s. She never married and was descended from Zachariah Tuten. She said that Zachariah Tuten, according to an old aunt of hers, was part cherokee indian and that he would not wear shoes, always went bare footed. Also, he would not sleep in the house, but would sleep in the woods indian style ( this was in Roane county, TN). According to the census records he was born in North Carolina. In Roane county there is a deed of trust between Zachriah Tuten ( he was also called "Wilie Tootle") and his two son in laws, Joe Lacy & Aaron Lewis. Aaron was married to Sarah Tuten, while Joe Lacy was married to Susan Tuten. ( Gladys was't sure about Susan & Sarah's relationship, Sarah may have been Susan's aunt or they may have been sisters). Anyway, Joe borrowed $5.00 & Aaron borrowed $50.00. Every thing they owned was morgaged to Zachariah Tuten, hay, animals, knives, forks, spoons, everything. I guess they paid him back. In ca 1869 Joe & Susan (Tuten) Lacy removed to Hartville, MO. Dodson Coward & family moved with them. Sometime later the Cowards moved to northwestern Arkansas. Abe Lacy, Elizabeth's brother, removed to Hunt county, TX ca 1886. Abe would travel back to MO to visit and he would stay at the Cowards to visit and rest. He said that they kept a chest in the room next to where he slept & it made him nervous sleeping near all that money.----Gene Lacey

Was the Gladys Marie Sharp, who never was married born in 1904 & died in 1979. Was her father Josiah W. Sharp, son of Martin Sharp. This person's grandfather was Merideth Sharp, who had also been married prior to a Phoebe Ballard & had a son named Newton C. Sharp. Newton was born in 1840 (was a wagon maker) & married Rhoda Eveline Chumley after her 1st husband, Wiley Tuten, Jr. (my great grandfather) died died in 1863 in a Southern Civil War camp (fought for Northern side). Since Ms. Chumley was my great grandmother, her 2nd husband, Newton would be my step great grandparent. Is this Gladys Marie Sharp the same one & was she directly related to Zachariah Tuten, Sr.? He also had an "idiot" son named Wiley Tuten (born:1812/brother of Sarah & Susan). My Wiley Tuten, Jr. was born in 1814 & was the son of Wiley Tuten, Sr. (born:1784), who was made Constable of Roane County in 1820. He died in 1842. In 1813, Zachariah Tuten, Sr., Obediah Tuten (Zachs' son), Jonathan (John) Tuten (Zachs' brother) and my Wiley Tuten, Sr. came from North Carolina (about 1810) & mustered at Kingston, Tennessee to fight in the War of 1812 (in 1813). Wiley was a sergeant/corporal, John was a 1st Lieutenant & both Zachariah & Obediah were privates for their 3 months service under Captain, William Neilson's Company. All four Tutens married Cherokee Indian women, except possibly John. At my great great grandfather, Wiley Tuten, Sr.'s two weddings in 1806 & 1813 there was another Wiley Tuten present at both weddings and it must have been Zachariah Tuten, Sr. I have requested a death certificate (couldn't get a birth certificate from North Carolina) for Wiley Tuten, Sr., who died in 1842 to see who his father was since I am not sure, but I believe it might have been Zachariah Tuten, Sr., who was married twice. Prior to marrying Ally Dickson Tuten in 1806, he had seven children to an unknown (possibly Cherokee Indian woman) and an 8th child in 1820 to this woman, after having married Alley in 1806. I believe Wiley Tuten, Sr. if he was a son of Zachariah Tuten, Sr. would have been a 9th child from that marriage (not sure). He had two other sons noted from this connection or marriage; Zachariah Tuten, Jr. (Zachie) & Obediah Tuten. Both Zachariah & Wiley Tuten, Sr. lived in Roane County, while John & Obediah Tuten moved to Giles County (1820 & 1836 censuses). I know that Zachariah Tuten, Sr. died after 1855 or 1860 (although rumored to have died in 1826- that must have been his grandson/son of Zachariah Tuten, Jr.). Do you know the exact year when Zachariah Tuten, Sr. died or whether he was my Wiley Tuten, Sr.'s father? Are you, Gene Lacey descended also from Joe Lacy & Zachariah Tuten, Sr.?

I am descended from Joe Lacy's youngest brother Reuben Lacy(a Union soldier from Roane county, TN). They were both sons of Abraham Lacy & Elizabeth Allen. Glady Marie Sharp wrote that she was the daughter of Josiah Wilson Sharp & Lucinda Maria Lewis (m. Jan. 22, 1884) Miss Sharp was born 20 years later, which means she was born in 1903 or 1904. Heres what she said about Zachariah Tuten and I quote "John Wells Lewis was descendant of Cherokee Indian and English nationality. Riley or Wylie (Ma called him "Wylie Tootle") Zaccariah Tootle was grandfather or J. W. Lewis and lived in the woods and never would wear shoes but lived Indian fashion. I do not know what this Zachriah Tuten and Wiley Tuten's relationship was?

Gene and Glenn,
I'd just like to say "Thanks!" to both of you for publicly posting your replys to each other here. Most researchers choose to ignore the rest of us and email each other privately but I really enjoy reading your information on my g-g-g-grandfather, Zachariah Tuten. One thing that I'd like to ask both of you - do either of you have ANY proof that Zachariah Tuten was part Cherokee? Is he listed on any of the Cherokee census rolls? Do either of you have the names of the Cherokee wives he supposedly married? Here's how I'm related to him.
