I have also been working for over ten years to find proof of my wifes Cherokee line, she is a Sharp. Her family line is as follows; Grandfather:Kenneth Keith Sharp, GG: Josiah Wilson Sharp, GGG: Martin Sharp, and GGGG: Merdith Sharp, most of them are from Roane Tennessee. I believe that the Cherokee line is through Lucida Maria Lewis (Josiah W. Sharps wife), to Zachariah Tuten. I would appreciate any information that you may have regarding Sarah Tuten and or the Sharps.
Thanks,
John

Glenn, It's been 12 years since you were active in TUTEN & PRATT (2002) but I came across your entries recently and would like to know if you're still looking for info on TUTEN, PRATT, NEERGAARD, HALL, ROANE CO., TN, BETHEL CEMETERY IN STEPTOE, WASHINGTON, etc. I have been going down the same road but from a different starting point and wondering if I have come across something you might find interesting.
My search started with Rhoda Eveline Chumley (1837-1916) who married Wiley Tuten (1814-1863). Rhoda was the daughter of my GGG Grandmother, Mary Etta Chumley. Rhoda & Wiley had a son, John Wiley Tuten (1862-1922) who married Eliza Emma Tinnel (1875-1900), she was 16 yr. old, and had 3 children before she died between 1897 & 1900 in Washington state.
John Wiley Tuten then married Mary Jane Sharp (1884-1973) (daughter of Elizabeth Sharp (1864) & Richard Jens Neergaard (1862-1948). Mary Jane Sharp Neergaard was adopted by her grandmother, Mary Jane Miller Neergaard & husband, Wm. Meridith Hall. Mary Jane Sharp/Neergaard/Hall had traveled to Washington state with her grandparents when she was 17 yrs. old and married John Wiley Tuten in 1901. She & John Wiley Tuten had about 11 children before John Wiley Tuten died in 1922. The widow married Bertram Pratt on 1 Jul 1925 in Spokane, WA.
This is where your family entered the picture. - Bertram Pratt died in 1950. Bertram's first wife, Emma C. Moe Pratt died in 1924 (her stone reads 1921) and his 2nd wife, Mary Jane Neergaard/Hall Tuten Pratt, died in 1973. The three of them are buried in Bethel Cemetery, Steptoe, Washington, WA. Bertram & Emma are in Sec. 2 and Mary Jane is in Sec. 3.
FIND A GRAVE MEMORIALS:
Bertram Pratt - FAG Mem. # 39075952
Emma C. Pratt - FAG Mem # 39076026
Mary Jane Neergaard/Hall Pratt - FAG Mem # 39100549
George A. Pratt (Bertram's son) - FAG Mem # 39076159

Note: There is a discrepancy in Emma Pratt's death date. Your aunt said 1935 but the cemetery records say 1924 & her marker reads 1921.
Please let me know if you receive this E-Mail. Sincerely, Doroeck@AOL.com

I've been looking through these 8 pages of messages about Zachariah Tuten for days now, trying to put it all together. There are just so many Zachariah's and Wiley's! This is what I have come up with, please let me know where my mistakes are.

William Hall Tuten & Jemina Mae had one son, Zachariah.
Zachariah Tuten married an Indian woman and had at least 8 children. There are 4 names that everyone seems to be pretty sure of - Jonathan, Richard Simon, Thomas and Elizabeth. These children would be 1/2 Cherokee. He then married Ally Dickson and had 3 children, Sarah, who married Aaron Lewis, Wiley, who never married and was retarded, and Susan, who married Joseph Lacy. This is who I am descended from.
William Hall Tuten also married Ann Hall. They had one child, Wiley Tuten, Sr.
Wiley Tuten, Sr. married Rachel Coody, daughter of Archibald Coody and Edith Vann. Archibald Coody is the s/o Archibald Coody and Eughtooie Tassell, a Cherokee woman.
Wiley Tuten, Sr. and Rachel had one child, Sarah, she would be 1/2 Cherokee.
Sarah Tuten married Larkin Forrester and they had one child, Wiley Forrester, he would be 1/4 Cherokee.
Wiley Forrester married Elizabeth Coody. It is said in these messages that she is descended from Amatoya Moytoy - so is Rachel Coody - not sure of the relationship.
Wiley Tuten Sr., then married Lavina Bailey. They had a son, Wiley Tuten (3rd).
Wiley Tuten (3rd) married Susan Marney and had a son, Robert Lafayette Tuten.
Wiley Tuten (3rd) then married Rhoda Eveline Chumley and they had a son, John Wiley Tuten. (Rhoda Eveline Chumley married Newton Sharp after Wiley Tuten (3rd) died.)
John Wiley Tuten married Eliza Emma Tinnel.
John Wiley Tuten then married Mary Jane Neergaard. (Mary Jane Neergaard married Bertrand Pratt after John Wiley Tuten died.)

So the Indian connection seems to be with the children Zachariah had with the Indian woman, not much seems to be known about them. And then the other connection would be through Rachel Coody, passed down to her son Wiley Forrester.

I've been reading this 8 page thread and FINALLY have found somebody recently looking into this...the eldest Zachariah Tuten (1766-1867) is my 5th ggf and I believe your 3rd ggf is the brother of my 4th ggm Mary 'Polly' Tuten who was born in 1800 to Zachariah and the same mother... probably Cherokee. I have recently traveled in that area of TN, and Roane County is just north of Monroe County, which encompasses historical sites of the Overhill Cherokee... who lived on the opposite side of the mountains than the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. Roane County was formed in 1801, before that it was the Southwest Territory. They had attempted to have the capital of the Territory on the Clinch River, but it was owned by the Cherokee. All of this speaks to the opportunity to live like/with the Cherokee...
Also, the Wiley Tuten who married Rachel Coody is in the Reservation Rolls... the first of the Cherokee Rolls...
Hope somebody is out there by now... maybe somebody knows something else...
