I am trying to find out information about the family name Tutas. My relatives settled in Hamilton, Ohio and a great(great) grandfather is supposed to have fled the Polish Army. My grandfather Paul was a child of 13+, his mother died early and children were separated. Any information is appreciated.

Hi Amanda !

I am a German, living in Texas now. You are
probably right that your ancestors are coming
from Poland. Also my great great grandfather
came from there, like most of the Tuttass's.
The Family name was modified often like Tutas,
Tuttas, Tutass... but obviously belong to the
same root.

Please contact me for further discussions !

BR

Thomas

Hello and thanks for posting a message. I have had that on the web for a long time and figured I would never get a reply. The name seems to be unknown. What does it mean? What other information might you have? I have very little as you saw by my message. Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

Tutas ancestors.

Your message sounds a lot like the story of my grandmother's family. Do you know the name of the ancestor who fled the army?

My father was Earl Gardner from Hamilton,Ohio. He was born in 1913 and died in 1976.

There was a family friend of his who was a Tutas. I do not know the first name but he went on to be a priest. Is this a relative to you?

I am Amanda's sister, but will reply to this inquiry. We do have a great uncle (I believe that's the relation), who is a priest - Father Stephan Tutas. If you do an internet search, his name comes up quite frequently. I believe he is currently in Texas.

Hopefully that helps you answer your question. We also used to have an eccentric Aunt Mary who lived outside of Hamilton up until the 80's. I don't believe her last name was Tutas, however, and I can't remember what her married name was.

I am not really sure other than Albert is a family name. My great-grandfather had 13 kids and his wife died when they were very young. The kids were all split up and they lost track of some of the siblings. That is about all I know. Was your family name Tutas or a variation. They were settled in Hamilton, Ohio. That is about all I know.

Hi Amanda,
Reading over your e-mails again, I'm not sure I'm too clear on everything you're saying. I will start from the beginning of my story and you can see if there are parelells or anything helpful about it . My great-grandfather was Adolf (sp. ?) Tutas and his wife was Caroline. I have recently found out that they came from Poland, which at the time was Prussia, but near the Russian border. They had at least a dozen children of which my grandmother was the youngest of these; she was born in 1910. Adolf and Caroline settled in Wisconsin. Caroline did die shortly after my grandmother was born, possibly a suicide. So she did die young, as did your ancestor.
The story has always been that Adolf was in the Prussian army (at the time Poland and Germany were Prussia) and he had had some kind of trouble there that made him have to leave the country. We're not sure what. Maybe he killed an officer, even. He was said to have been a very violent man. My father met him at least once. However, apparently my aunt either possesses or has seen a copy of his military papers and there does not seem to be a confirmation of this.

The children did split up after the mother died. My grandmother, for instance, eventually went to live with her sister who was married. My grandmother did mention visiting a sibling once in Ohio or Kentucky. She was definitley the youngest, being born in 1910.

We know that my Tutas ancestors were born in Poland near Russia, and that the name could be Russian. It is also thought that my great-grandfather's (Adolf's) mother was Jewish as her name we think was Berkowitz or Berkowski, something like that.

So many parts of your story seem to paralell my own, except for the Ohio bit. However, I also know that Adolf and Caroline left children in Prussia before they came to the US. Thus, could your ancestor be one of those children? Or maybe Adolf and your ancestor were brothers or something and it was actually their father who had the military difficulties? I am a hundred percent sure, however, that Adlof and Caroline lived in Wisconsin. As I said, my dad once visited their farm. So if your ancestor just went straigth from the old country to Ohio, it may not be the same, although the stories are shockingly similar.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone looking for info on Tutas ancestors, please contact my aunt at bunsworth@masonwells.com She may have the info. you seek.

To A. Fede from NOV 29th. I have read your background information and will take this with me to the holiday gatherings with my Tutas relatives. It is too similar to believe somehow they are not connected.

My Grandfather Paul Tutas was born Jan 2, 1910 same year as your grandmother. So that rules that out unless there were twins? He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio and separated from his parents as I said. His brothers and sisters that I know were Anthony and Josephine. In any event the escaping from the Prussian Army has to be the connection whether or not your grandmother and my grandfather were cousins or something like you suggested. I will ask my Dad and his brother to fill in some better details. Take care. Amanda.
