I am trying to track down information on an ancestor Aaron Turner. He was born circa 1818 and died in the mid-1860s.

In 1847, he married Susan Cunningham (1824-1908). They show up in 1850 and 1860 census in Pendleton County, VA (now WV). Aaron and Susan had at least three children: Joseph, Susan, and John. Susan quickly remarried to George Hughes after Aaron's death. The Turner descendents (at least through Joseph) remained mostly in WV.

What is particularly interesting is that Aaron shows up on the census as "mulatto". Also interesting is that his children are also listed as "mulatto" but after Susan (who is apparently of Irish and/or English descent) married George the children were listed as "white".

I heard claims of Native American ancestors on this side of the family; I'm not sure if that could have resulted in a "mulatto" census designation in the mid-1800s.
