Early in french Quebec pioneer days, people couldn't write or sign their names. They relied on the priest (who were more educated at the time) to spell the family name correctly, during the baptism of their child. Turmel was not a common name so it was often spelled turmel, turmelle, tremenne tremaine.

Hello Muriel,
I checked out the albums and couldn't find any connections to my family line. I am researching the Turmaine/Turmel family from Beauce, Quebec. My grgrandfather is Hermenegilde Turmaine b. Abt. 1868, married on April 29, 1911 to Azilda Labelle b. March 10, 1884. It is told to me that Hermenegilde changed his last name from Trumel to Turmaine. He was apparently married many times (possibly 5 times). One was to Azilda Labelle, another to a Virginia Perrault and another to a Gagnon. Two of his siblings may have been Amedie Turmaine b. Abt. 1869 and Joseph Albert Turmaine (no dates). I do not know much more than this. If you have anything that might be a connection, I would appreciate the assistance.

Have you checked out the commonwealth war graves commission web site. They have a listing of Hermenegilde and (Virginia) Perrault's son Joseph Turmaine who died in the first world war. Here is the link: http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_details.aspx?casua... .
He is also listed on the Veteran's Affairs web site at: http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collection... . This site, however, lists that he was the son of Hermenegilde Turmaine of 299 Huron St. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and his late wife, Virginia Perrault. I did get a copy of his attestation papers as well, but I can't seem to find the link for them right now. If I find it, I will let you know.
A

Hello again Muriel,
That sounds like a good presumption, however, since you pretty much had more information than I did on his other marriages, I couldn't say for certain. It does fit into the line very well from what we have though, so I would say that until we get anything that states otherwise it would be a good place. I don't speak, read or write in french (even though by anscestry is mostly french) my mother has offered to put her rusty french to use if I can find anything worth sending to her. I was thinking that Virginia and Marie-Lucie may have been related as well (or it was a middle/nic name as the french are so notorious for). How are you related to this line.... For me, Hermenegilde is my Great grandfather on my father's side. I hope we can help each other more on this... Thank you again for the info you gave to me.
Andrea

Andrea, considering the DOB of Joseph TURMAINE, may we presume that his mother, VIRGINIA PERRAULT, was the 4th wife of Herménégilde TURMEL/TURMAINE. I don't have any church registries for the Lac Mégantic region, so I can't search there. Maybe Herman married her in Sault-Sainte-Marie, ON.
Thanks for the links. A good source of info, which I hadn't checked out. Am just now working more on the TURMEL file.
Any further info would be appreciated.
Anyway, am listing Virginia as the 4th wife till I find something else, especially since I have his marriage to AZILDA LABELLE as being in 1911 & since she's not Joseph's mom, maybe Virginia was related to Marie-LUCIE PERREAULT, whom I have as his first wife, married in 1889.
Thanks again.

My maternal grandmother was a TURMEL from Saints-Anges-de-Beauce, QC. I've done extensive research on the TURMEL's. You may see pictures & genealogical information on my Webshots site. I created the albums to bring to light my French-Canadian & Franco-American ancestors. Should you have any questions, just leave a note in one of the Guestbooks:
http://community.webshots.com/user/murmur
You'll find more than 1500 photos there.

I have many relatives in Maine also, Most of them lived in Rumford and vicinity. My Great grandfather was Pierre Turmel, Grandfather Zephirin Turmel Buried in St. Norbert, d'arthabaska. Qc. Canada, Father was Rosaire {Ralph} Turmel buried in Calvary cenetery 9W . Glenmont New york Where I will also be buried. Our last Name I believe was Turmelle and was changed by my great, Great grandfather to just Turmel the le on the end was dropped, I believe because the french in Canada did not look upon Italians very respectively, and Turmelle sounded a little Italian.

MARIE ANNE TURMEL-BOURGEOIS

I am doing a genealogy research of my DUCHARME
family I need help re the maternal side. Am seeking
info re: MARIE ANNE TURMEL, who was married to an
EMILE BOURGEOIS somewhere in the province of Quebec.
The couple had 4 children: ANTOINETTE, MARGAREIT (my mom), twins: EDWARD ALBERT.
Sometime around 1918, MARIE ANNE BOURGEOIS immigrated to MANCHESTER, NH with
the 4 kids. Husband was left behind no one would speak
of him. I was always told he was dead, but that wasn't so.
MARIE ANNE TURMEL-BOURGEOIS raised her children alone in
Manchester, NH, where she worked in the textile mills.
She died in the 1980's. I am looking for her ancestors, many
of whom lived in Saints-Anges, a small town in the BEAUCE region of Quebec.

Pictures of MARIE ANNE TURMEL-BOURGEOIS may be seen at the following URL:
http://community.webshots.com/user/murmurd

Please leave a message in the GUESTBOOK as to whether or not you know of the
family.

Thanks!
